Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Municipal image-building now promotes cities globally, and also to their own citizens. Image-building in Canadian Municipalities explores the decision making processes that determine how cities and towns choose to represent themselves. It also assesses the effectiveness of those processes and of the images themselves. Documenting how image-building policies vary across municipalities and provinces, contributors focus on the interaction between various levels of government and on the involvement and influence of business organizations, heritage associations, environmental groups, and other social forces. Delving into largely unexplored areas of research, with a particular interest in smaller towns and cities, authors show how municipal image-making is often used to advance other policy objectives, and thereby intersects with areas such as culture, economic development, tourism, and immigration. Image-building in Canadian Municipalities shows how municipalities of all sizes are conscious of their images. Thought-provoking and instructive, it provides lessons to policy makers and social interest groups about creating better public policies. Contributors include Caroline Andrew (University of Ottawa), John C. Lehr (University of Winnipeg), Judy Lynn Richards (University of Prince Edward Island), Cristine de Clercy (University of Western Ontario), Peter Ferguson (University of Western Ontario), and Karla Zubrycki International Institute for Sustainability, Winnipeg).

Book excerpt: "The development of the feature film industry in Canada has been uncertain and difficult, with problems usually attributed to the country's small population and US domination of the movie industry. Ted Magder goes beyond these obvious influences in his examination of Canada's state policies as they affected the production of Canadian feature films from the First World War to the present. He presents a study focusing on the interplay between government policy and the dynamics of the industry, and undertakes an examination of cultural dependency in Canada. State policies, Magder points out, are related to domestic forces that impinge upon and set limits to policy decisions and their implementation." "In the immediate postwar period, the tone for much of Canada's cultural policies was set by the National Film Board and the recommendations of the Massey Commission. Members of both organizations expressed distaste for films designed to entertain and deemed feature filmmaking unworthy of support. A change of heart took place in the watershed year of 1967 with the passing of the Canadian Film Development Corporation Act, when Canadians finally entered the business of feature film production. Magder considers how this came to pass, what had changed within the industry itself to make feature film production viable, and why the state changed its position from one of neglect to one of support. In the last five chapters, he examines the contradictions and limitations that have bedevilled Canadian feature film production over the last two decades." "In his conclusion, Magder proposes that both the notion of cultural dependency and the goal of public support for cultural production to express national identity need to be re-examined."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book excerpt: Canada is at a critical juncture in the evolution of its communications policy. Will our information and communications technologies continue in a market-oriented, neoliberal direction, or will they preserve and strengthen broader democratic values? Media Divides offers a comprehensive, up-to-date audit of communications law and policy. Using the concept of communications rights as a framework for analysis, leading scholars not only reveal the nation’s democratic deficits in five key domains – media, access, the Internet, privacy, and copyright – they also formulate recommendations, including the establishment of a Canadian right to communicate, for the future.
