Book Synopsis Computer Simulation Comparisons Between an Ecosystem Management Strategy and Clear-cutting with Artificial Regeneration for a Forest in Northwestern Ontario by : Canada-Ontario Northern Ontario Development Agreement
Download or read book Computer Simulation Comparisons Between an Ecosystem Management Strategy and Clear-cutting with Artificial Regeneration for a Forest in Northwestern Ontario written by Canada-Ontario Northern Ontario Development Agreement and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This note examines the economic consequences of expanding the use of alternative silvicultural systems featuring natural regeneration as one component of an ecosystem management strategy. Such a strategy is in contrast to a sustained yield management strategy similar to that practised during the last decade in Seine River Forest, Ontario. The examination uses a modified version of the HSG (Harvest Scheduled Generator) software developed to schedule stands for clear-cutting in even-aged forests. A computer simulation was applied to the Seine River Forest to explore two general strategies: sustained yield management and ecosystem management. The former strategy used the clear-cutting system exclusively. Simulation results presented include economic indicators such as volume and area cut, residual timber value, and timber operating costs.

Book Synopsis A Comparison of Five Common Artificial Regeneration Methods for Jack Pine in Northwestern Ontario by : Ontario. Northwest Region Science and Technology
Download or read book A Comparison of Five Common Artificial Regeneration Methods for Jack Pine in Northwestern Ontario written by Ontario. Northwest Region Science and Technology and published by Thunder Bay, Ont. : Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, Northwestern Ontario Forestry Program. This book was released on 1994 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A survey of recently seeded and planted jack pine stands was undertaken to estimate the cost effectiveness of various establishment techniques. The survey included 37 5-9-year-old jack pine stands in northwestern Ontario that were assessed using aerial photography. The stands represented the common regeneration methods of aerial and precision seeding on furrows, aerial and precision seeding on intermittent scalps, and planting. The survey areas also represented three site types based on depth of mineral soil to bedrock ranging from shallow to deep.

Book Synopsis Regenerating the Canadian Forest by : Stephen J. Colombo
Download or read book Regenerating the Canadian Forest written by Stephen J. Colombo and published by Markham, Ont. : Fitzhenry & Whiteside. This book was released on 2001 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past decade, forest sustainability has been a focus of concern for forest management and research in Canada and around the globe. At the core of sustainable forestry is the ability to successfully regenerate forests that have been harvested or disturbed in other ways. Regeneration practices are vital to shaping the composition and quality of forests, determining the levels of sustainable harvest for entire forests, managing and protecting wildlife habitat and aquatic ecosystems, and restoring severely disturbed ecosystems. Until now, there has been no guide for forest regeneration practices applicable to eastern Canada and the northeastern portion of the United States. This book provides a comprehensive synthesis about the principles and practice of forest regeneration, with special reference to the province of Ontario. It is intended as a guide for practicing foresters, forestry students, wildlife biologists, and others who need a refernce that identifies reforestation problems and suggests feasible solutions.

This book was released on 1989 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This silvicultural guide is one of several, each of which provides a description of the silvicultural characteristics of the working group species and describes silvicultural practices for the working group. The guide reflects relevant literature and research, and the knowledge and experience of forestry staff in the management of the working group in Ontario and elsewhere. The guide covers the range and commercial importance of white pine and red spruce, siting, and wildlife and environmental considerations. Management prescriptions include such silvicultural systems as shelterwood and clear cut systems, harvesting considerations, forest renewal, stand maintenance, conversion and management intensity. Data is also given on the age-class distribution, historical harvest, average roundwood receipts, and biological rotation ages.
