A group called the Remonstrants, followers of Jacobus Arminius, presented a petition that argued for a version of the faith that watered down many of the distinctive theological positions inherited from John Calvin and from Augustine before him. The petition caused controversy in the Dutch Reformed Church, and it demanded a response. In 1618, the church convened a synod in the port town of Dordrecht. There, the document known as the Canons of Dort was crafted. This remarkable document sets forth clearly and forcefully the Reformed understanding of salvation, which preserved the theology of the Reformation and provided the world with an elegant and powerful defense of the biblical gospel. In Saving the Reformation: The Pastoral Theology of the Canons of Dort, Dr. W. Robert Godfrey examines the background and activity of the Synod of Dort, providing crucial historical context. He then provides a fresh translation of the Canons of Dort from the Dutch and a new, pastoral commentary, allowing a new generation of readers to understand and appreciate this important text for themselves"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calvinist theology has been debated and promoted for centuries. But is it a theology that should last? Roger Olson suggests that Calvinism, also commonly known as Reformed theology, holds an unwarranted place in our list of accepted theologies. In Against Calvinism, readers will find scholarly arguments explaining why Calvinist theology is incorrect and how it affects God’s reputation. Olson draws on a variety of sources, including Scripture, reason, tradition, and experience, to support his critique of Calvinism and the more historically rich, biblically faithful alternative theologies he proposes. Addressing what many evangelical Christians are concerned about today—so-called “new Calvinism,” a movement embraced by a generation labeled as “young, restless, Reformed” —Against Calvinism is the only book of its kind to offer objections from a non-Calvinist perspective to the current wave of Calvinism among Christian youth. As a companion to Michael Horton’s For Calvinism, readers will be able to compare contrasting perspectives and form their own opinions on the merits and weaknesses of Calvinism.

Book excerpt: Christians love to celebrate grace, but often talk about it in vague generalities. But such an important biblical concept ought to be clearly defined so it can be consistently defended. In this book, best-selling author Kevin DeYoung points modern readers back to an old document originally written to do just that. Warmly pastoral and broadly accessible, this book introduces readers to the Canons of Dort, a 17th-century work summarizing the central doctrines of the Christian faith. Widely regarded as a key pillar of the Reformed tradition, the Canons of Dort stand as a faithful witness to God's grace—offering a depth of understanding that the church still needs today. In three concise sections—covering history, theology, and practical application—DeYoung explores what led to the Canons and why they were needed, the five important doctrines that they explain, and Dort's place in the Reformed tradition today.

Are you content to call yourself an “Evangelical?” Is the Evangelical Gospel the same Gospel of the Protestant Reformation? Is an Evangelical today the same as an evangelical during the time of Luther, Calvin or the Puritans? If the magisterial Reformers suddenly walked into your church today, would they be pleased with the Gospel that is being preached from its pulpit? These questions are not insignificant. It is of eternal importance to have a sound view of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the teachings of the Bible. Today evangelicalism is equated with Arminianism, or some type of watered down Arminianism. But Arminianism is not the Gospel no matter what form it comes in. So asking, “What does it mean to believe the Gospel?” is of grave importance. How is a person saved by the work of Jesus Christ? How does true “Gospel Faith” actually work? Does it “work” at all? Contemporary Christendom has been thrown into theological confusion in recent decades and there is a need to rescue the Biblical Gospel from the errors plaguing the church today. This book exists to correct some of those views and explain the basics of true Reformed Theology. It presents a high standard of believing what God truly says about salvation and explores how faith works in believing the Biblical Gospel contained in the pages of Scripture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book seeks to add a needed introduction to a way of meditation used among early modern English Protestants, influenced by Bishop Joseph Hall. Furthermore, the major role that Hall had in his Arte of Divine Mediation on late-seventeenth-century Protestant spirituality went beyond the practice of meditation and established a positive claim on the role of the imagination in shaping souls, well into the modern period. Within this context, the questions related to ancient understandings of faith and the interrelationship of divine revelation are discussed with fresh insights for our own times. If a revival of interest emerges again in Hall's work, it would be a compelling and fresh impetus to reclaim the broken imagination evident in many parts of the Western Church.

Book excerpt: At the start of the gay rights movement in 1969, evangelicalism's leading voices cast a vision for gay people who turn to Jesus. It was C.S. Lewis, Billy Graham, Francis Schaeffer and John Stott who were among the most respected leaders within theologically orthodox Protestantism. We see with them a positive pastoral approach toward gay people, an approach that viewed homosexuality as a fallen condition experienced by some Christians who needed care more than cure. With the birth and rise of the ex-gay movement, the focus shifted from care to cure. As a result, there are an estimated 700,000 people alive today who underwent conversion therapy in the United States alone. Many of these patients were treated by faith-based, testimony-driven parachurch ministries centered on the ex-gay script. Despite the best of intentions, the movement ended with very troubling results. Yet the ex-gay movement died not because it had the wrong sex ethic. It died because it was founded on a practice that diminished the beauty of the gospel. Yet even after the closure of the ex-gay umbrella organization Exodus International in 2013, the ex-gay script continues to walk about as the undead among us, pressuring people like me to say, "I used to be gay, but I'm not gay anymore. Now I'm just same-sex attracted." For orthodox Christians, the way forward is a path back to where we were forty years ago. It is time again to focus with our Neo-Evangelical fathers on care--not cure--for our non-straight sisters and brothers who are living lives of costly obedience to Jesus. With warmth and humor as well as original research, Still Time to Care will chart the path forward for our churches and ministries in providing care. It will provide guidance for the gay person who hears the gospel and finds themselves smitten by the life-giving call of Jesus. Woven throughout the book will be Richard Lovelace’s 1978 call for a "double repentance" in which gay Christians repent of their homosexual sins and the church repents of its homophobia--putting on display for all the power of the gospel.
