Download or read book Forever Changes written by John Einarson and published by Jawbone Press. This book was released on 2010-05-15 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Widely hailed as a genius, Arthur Lee was a character every bit as colorful and unique as his music. In 1966, he was Prince of the Sunset Strip, busy with his pioneering racially-mixed band Love, and accelerating the evolution of California folk-rock by infusing it with jazz and orchestral influences, a process that would climax in a timeless masterpiece, the Love album Forever Changes. Shaped by a Memphis childhood and a South Los Angeles youth, Lee always craved fame. Drug use and a reticence to tour were his Achilles heels, and he succumbed to a dissolute lifestyle just as superstardom was beckoning. Despite endorsements from the likes of Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton, Leess subsequent career was erratic and haunted by the shadow of Forever Changes, reaching a nadir with his 1996 imprisonment for a firearms offence. Redemption followed, culminating in an astonishing post-millennial comeback that found him playing Forever Changes to adoring multi-generational fans around the world. This upswing was only interrupted by his untimely death, from leukemia, in 2006. Writing with the full consent and cooperation of Arthur's widow, Diane Lee, author John Einarson has meticulously researched a biography that includes lengthy extracts from the singer's vivid, comic, and poignant memoirs, published here for the first time.

Book excerpt: Arthur Lee's band, Love, is widely acknowledged as one of most influential groups of the late sixties. Led by Lee through a tempestuous history of dissolutions and resurrections, their psychedelie-folk masterpiece, Forever Changes, regularly appears in polls of the greatest albums of all time. Recent times, however, have not been so kind: in 1996. Lee was disgnosed with Parkinson's disease and also received a twelve-year sentence for threatening his neighbors with a gun. Including interviews with Lee himself and guitarist Bryan Maclean, among many others, this fascinating tale reveals the dark side of the Summer of Love--heroin, crime, and bitter ego battles--while also tracking Lee's musical career through the post Love years to his recent incarceration in a U.S. jail.
Download or read book Open Cockpit written by Arthur Gould Lee and published by Grub Street Publishers. This book was released on 2012-08-19 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A riveting firsthand account of training for—and surviving—air combat during World War I, by the author of No Parachute. Thanks to a broken leg during flight school, Arthur Gould Lee gained valuable time flying trainers before he was posted in France during World War I. In November 1917 during low-level bombing and strafing attacks, he was shot down three times by ground fire. He spent eight months at the front and accumulated 222 hours of flight time in Sopwith Pups and Camels during a staggering 118 patrols, and engaged in combat 56 times. And yet he lived to retire from the RAF as an air vice-marshal in 1946. Lee puts you in the cockpit in this compelling personal account of life as a fighter pilot at the front. At turns humorous and dramatic, this thoughtful, enlightening memoir is a classic of military aviation.
