This practice-based research inquiry examines when flow moments occur during artistic doodling, how they can be encouraged, adn reveals the potential benefits and limitations of collaborative doodling. This research is presented in two inquiry sections: the first being a solo-investigation; and the second a collaborative exploration. The initial stage of this inquiry is a solo exploration of my definition of doodling, how doodling became my preferred artistic process, and reflectively examines the factors that contribute to my experience of flow moments when creating art. An intrinsic component of this solo research was finding new ways to create moments of flow when working individually, and reflecting how they could influence and shape the second stage of the project. The second stage of this inquiry investigates doodling in collaboration with four participating artists. In an attempt to flesh out the spaces between conscious and unconscious artistic interventions, and the role that outside influences can play on the creative process, this collaborative inquiry developed into an examination of the factors which influence co-creation during different stages of art making. The framework for this second inquiry was created by utilising insights gained from the initial solo investigation. Accordingly, this research includes multiple strands of artistic exploration, including solo works, works created in collaboration, and interviews with the collaborating artists involved in the project. Selected key solo works and all artistic collaborations are included in the body of this exegesis to encourage immersion in this practice based research. Beginning as an artist and incorporating the different roles of researcher and teacher into the work, this research is an a/r/tographical inquiry into the way these oftentimes overlapping identities influence and guided the research. The outcomes from this research include insights into my creative processes, revealing previously unacknowledged tensions between the need for creative control and flow. One of the most important outcomes from this research was the development of non-verbal conversations between artists, and the way the collaborative process has the potential to both encourage and hinder flow moments. This work is a self-study which incorporates others in relation to my own work. I believe it holds significant relevance to a wider artistic audience seeking a different perspective on encouraging collaborative artistic flow, and the method of collaborative doodling enacted in this research has potential applications in both formal and informal educational settings." -- Abstract.

Book excerpt: My Capstone Project involved the study of dialogue about art as a collaborative means to inquiry, echoing the writing of Terry Barrett, Olivia Gude, Nel Noddings and others. I focused my research on a group of my fifth grade students' dialogic experiences with art in the classroom, viewed in print and online, and at a local art museum. Applying action research for the study, I collected art statements and reflections, plus recorded and videotaped dialogue as it evolved in our classroom art studio. Analyzing my data lead me to two major findings. First, I discovered that talking about art is a social process and that my role as teacher affected the process. Secondly, I saw how different students respond to art in different ways, how individually and in written form, students hesitate to respond deeply and how together, they are able to find questions and make meaning of different works of art. I share my findings through my website (http://www.thefineartsstudio.weebly.com), which will include video footage, notes and images presented as a visual narrative, and a prepared manuscript to submit to Art Education Journal. My recommendations to other teachers interested in promoting dialogic inquiry in the classroom include: establishing a safe and trusting classroom environment for social and emotional learning to take place; exposing students to multiple forms of art that promote contemporary art thinking; creating an open forum for interpretation; incorporating different means for multi-modal discussion in the art classroom; and, lastly, acknowledging that talking about art with others fosters collaborative inquiry.

Graduate and undergraduate arts students and their arts professors from four arts programs teach and learn together in a semester-long interdisciplinary collaborative arts course at a large, diverse city university in the Southwestern United States. To demonstrate the broadening of and burrowing into stories of artistic collaboration within the context of contemporary institutions of education, the framework of the tidy online corporate-tinged training course on group work titled “Revving up Your High-Performance Project Team” is appropriated to re-story the course’s technical stages of collaboration: chaos, conflict, collaboration, and collection. Complexities and considerations of interdisciplinary artistic collaboration are unveiled to preface stories of the collaborative inquiries that spring 2008 course participants have engaged in. To illustrate the ever-present complexities of the focus of this study, the initial chapter “Stage One: Chaos” sifts through the maelstrom of literature on multifarious notions of collaboration as they pertain to education and the arts. Written works by significant philosophers, theorists, and practitioners such as John Dewey mix with historical accounts of interdisciplinary arts/education institutions like Black Mountain College becoming layers of collaborative, artistic, and interdisciplinary vii perspectives. Diverse approaches to collaborative learning and art-making are used to illustrate the interdisciplinary nature of the artistic collaboration in education chronicled in this research project. Within a messy back story of theory and practice, the chapter also provides a detailed description of the research participants and context of this inquiry into teacher and student collaborations and begins to flesh out the problems and possibilities embedded in concepts relevant to this examination of artistic collaboration in education: hierarchy, structure, tension, chaos. As they produce swirling stories of collaboration through their conjoined experiences of “unstructured” artistic work together, teachers and students of this innovational and practical collaborative arts course come to know collaboration and their roles within new contexts of the arts and education. The collaborative nature of the research focus and research methodology allow stories to be constructed with research participants about teacher practice, student experience, and processes and products of artistic practice to illustrate the unique space artistic collaborations provide in education as well as the complexities underlying collaboration in general. Besides undergirding the theoretical framework of this study with student stories of this collaborative arts course in the chapter “Stage Two: Conflict”, the narrative inquirer uses emerging images such as the “helix” and characters like the “not-good collaborator” to highlight the conflict of fluid, interdisciplinary approaches to education and the arts today. “Stage Three: Collaboration” chronicles the story of one collaborative group viii working through the spring 2008 cycle of the course in collaborative arts. One particular student’s experience within the group comes into focus to highlight the chaos and conflict that surfaces in the group’s work and the tools that the student utilizes to structure her experience and manage the ramifications of the diversity of perspectives within her group. The dissertation ends with “Stage Four: Collection,” where recommendations for managing highly fluid collaborative practices in an artistic mode carried out in educational settings are laid out. The final chapter also showcases metaphors and multiple threads of inquiry (Living Form, Embodied Knowledge, Narrative Authority, Interdisciplinarity, Best-Loved Self, and Counter-stories) that can be carried forward into future inquiries pertaining to collaboration in education.
