Niños y niñas comienzan a expresarse plásticamente muy pronto, hacia el año y medio aproximadamente, en que se inician en la etapa del garabateo y continuarán con esta labor creativa hasta la denominada etapa del realismo visual, en la que el dibujo y la expresión plástica se convierten en aprendizajes culturales. / Dada su singularidad, educadores y psicólogos han sido conscientes de la importancia del dibujo de los niños, ya que han entendido que estos exceden a sus propios significados plásticos o artísticos, puesto que es también un singular medio de expresión y comunicación de sus ideas, sentimientos y emociones. / Hay que tener en consideración que mientras el lenguaje verbal es un sistema de comunicación con una amplia dosis de racionalidad en aquello que se dice, el dibujo se revela como el medio idóneo a través del cual el niño narra visualmente su manera de entender el mundo real o imaginario que le rodea. / De este modo, El arte infantil nos presenta la evolución gráfica y plástica de niños y niñas, desde los dos años hasta los catorce, a través de las distintas etapas por las que atraviesan a medida que van creciendo. Pero el estudio no solo se realiza de forma textual, sino que cada edad se acompaña de una selección de dibujos a color y comentados para que se entiendan bien los modos de expresarse que poseen. / Por otro lado, esta tercera edición de El arte infantil se amplía con el capítulo de El dibujo de la familia, una de las grandes aportaciones que se incorporan, pues supone conocer al niño a través de un conocido tema, pero que en nuestro país no había sido abordado con la rigurosidad que se merece.
