Book excerpt: Working in 1970s Italy, a group of artists—namely Ugo La Pietra, Maurizio Nannucci, Francesco Somaini, Mauro Staccioli, Franco Summa, and Franco Vaccari—sought new spaces to create and exhibit art. Looking beyond the gallery, they generated sculptural, conceptual, and participatory interventions, called Arte Ambientale (Environmental Art), situated in the city streets. Their experiments emerged at a time of cultural crisis, when fierce domestic terrorism aggravated an already fragile political situation. To confront the malaise, these artists embraced a position of artistic autonomy and social critique, democratically connecting the city's inhabitants through direct art practices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eighth volume of the International Yearbook of Futurism Studies is again an open issue and presents in its first section new research into the international impact of Futurism on artists and artistic movements in France, Great Britain, Hungary and Sweden. This is followed by a study that investigates a variety of Futurist inspired developments in architecture, and an essay that demonstrates that the Futurist heritage was far from forgotten after the Second World War. These papers show how a wealth of connections linked Futurism with Archigram, Metabolism, Archizoom and Deconstructivism, as well as the Nuclear Art movement, Spatialism, Environmental Art, Neon Art, Kinetic Art and many other trends of the 1960s and 70s. The second section focuses on Futurism and Science and contains a number of papers that were first presented atthe fifth bi-annual conference of the European Network for Avant-Garde and Modernism Studies (EAM), held on 1–3 June 2016 in Rennes. They investigate the impact of science on Futurist aesthetics and the Futurist quest for a new perception and rational understanding of the world, as well as the movement’s connection with the esoteric domain, especially in the field of theosophy, the Hermetic tradition, Gnostic mysticism and a whole phalanx of Spiritualist beliefs. The Archive section offers a survey of collections and archives in Northern Italy that are concerned with Futurist ceramics, and a report on the Fondazione Primo Conti in Fiesole, established in April 1980 as a museum, library and archive devoted to the documentation of the international avant-garde, and to Italian Futurism in particular. A review section dedicated to exhibitions, conferences and publications is followed by an annual bibliography of international Futurism studies, exhibition catalogues, special issues of periodicals and new editions.

Book excerpt: Space and place have become central to analysis of culture and history in the humanities and social sciences. Making Place examines how people engage the material and social worlds of the urban environment via the rhythms of everyday life and how bodily responses are implicated in the making and experiencing of place. The contributors introduce the concept of spatial ethnography, a new methodological approach that incorporates both material and abstract perspectives in the study of people and place, and encourages consideration of the various levels--from the personal to the planetary--at which spatial change occurs. The book's case studies come from Costa Rica, Colombia, India, Austria, Italy, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Book excerpt: In 1644 the young Alkmaar artist Allart van Everdingen (1621-1675) travelled through Norway. It was an inspiring experience that set the course for his career. He went on to make countless paintings, drawings and etchings of rugged landscapes with waterfalls, log cabins and pine trees. These seemingly realistic snapshots of Norwegian scenery prove on closer examination to be artistic constructs, conceived and executed in the workshop. Van Everdingen had created a new genre in Dutch art that sold very well and was picked up by other artists, Jacob van Ruisdael among them. In the nineteenth century, his impressive mountain views became an important inspiration for the Romantics. He also painted dramatic seascapes and river views, Dutch landscapes full of narrative details, scenes of the springs at Spa and illustrations for the Tale of Reynard the Fox. This book is the first to be devoted to Allart van Everdingen's oeuvre in all its surprising scope. Exhibition: Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar, The Netherlands (18.09.2021 - 16.01.2022).

A great part of his most relevant works are shown here not only through photos of them in exhibitions, but also through Cildo's drawings and sketches, which allow us to see his processes of creation. In here, there are well-known installations such as Eureka / Blindhotland, Malhas da Liberdade, La Bruja and Desvio para o Vermelho, Através. There are also some of his less known works, never before gathered in a book. Another highlight of the book is a selection of 12 fundamental texts about Cildo's work, written by critics from all over the world, throughout his career, from his first exhibition in 1969 to 2017.
