Book excerpt: Exploring Oklahoma through paintings and sculpture, Art of the Oklahoma State Capitol examines the history of the state from the Indian Territory period through the twentieth century and beyond. Focusing on the art collected by Senator Charles Ford and sponsored by the Oklahoma State Senate Historical Preservation Fund, it reveals--through the vision of talented artists from around the state--the personalities of those who have shaped Oklahoma's past and present. Art of the Oklahoma State Capitol is divided into five sections, each detailing different aspects of the Oklahoma experience. The first section, "Oklahoma's People," features portraits of the famous as well as the ordinary men and women who challenged themselves and those around them to improve life for the citizens of the state and of the nation. The next section, "Oklahoma's Beauty," examines the state's ever-changing landscape, from the Tall Grass Prairie to the flatland of the Panhandle. The section "Living History" presents paintings of historical scenes, both international and local. Sections on bronze sculpture and nineteenth-century lithographs by McKenny and Hall round out the book and demonstrate the depth of the Senate Collection. Senator Ford has personally selected each work of art in this unique collection. Showcasing works by Charles Banks Wilson, Mike Wimmer, Linda Tuma Roberston, and many others, this book highlights some of the more prominent contemporary artists working in Oklahoma.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of the Oklahoma State Capitol is as wild and unpredictable as the story of Oklahoma itself. The on-again, off-again effort to construct the statehouse lasted five years as Oklahoma City and Guthrie jockeyed back and forth, each laying claim to the capital city. Finally, seven years after statehood, ground was broken on the capitol. Oklahoma's third governor, Robert Williams, seeking to keep costs low, put himself in charge of the Oklahoma State Capitol Building Commission and made the following controversial decision that would be debated for decades afterwards: he would forgo the structure's planned ornamental dome. It would not be added until 85 years later. Dome or no dome, the capitol has served as the People's House, a place for Oklahomans to let their voices be heard throughout the generations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At his death in 1994, Ralph Ellison left behind several thousand pages of his unfinished second novel, which he had spent nearly four decades writing. Five years later, Random House published Juneteenth, drawn from the central narrative of Ellison’s epic work in progress. Three Days Before the Shooting . . . gathers in one volume all the parts of that planned opus, including three major sequences never before published. Set in the frame of a deathbed vigil, the story is a gripping multigenerational saga centered on the assassination of a controversial, race-baiting U.S. senator who’s being tended to by an elderly black jazz musician turned preacher. Presented in their unexpurgated, provisional state, the narrative sequences brim with humor and tension, composed in Ellison’s magical jazz-inspired prose style. Beyond its compelling narratives, Three Days Before the Shooting . . . is perhaps most notable for its extraordinary insight into the creative process of one of this country’s greatest writers, and an essential, fascinating piece of Ralph Ellison’s legacy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Representations of first contact—the first meetings of European explorers and Native Americans—have always had a central place in our nation’s historical and visual record. They have also had a key role in shaping and interpreting that record. In Framing First Contact author Kate Elliott looks at paintings by artists from George Catlin to Charles M. Russell and explores what first contact images tell us about the process of constructing national myths—and how those myths acquired different meanings at different points in our nation’s history. First contact images, with their focus on beginnings rather than conclusive action or determined outcomes, might depict historical events in a variety of ways. Elliott argues that nineteenth-century artists, responding to the ambiguity and indeterminacy of the subject, used the visualized space between cultures meeting for the first time to address critical contemporary questions and anxieties. Taking works from the 1840s through the 1910s as case studies—paintings by Robert W. Weir, Thomas Moran, and Albert Bierstadt, along with Catlin and Russell—Elliott shows how many first contact representations, especially those commissioned and conceived as official history, speak blatantly of conquest, racial superiority, and imperialism. Yet others communicate more nuanced messages that might surprise contemporary viewers. Elliott suggests it was the very openness of the subject of first contact that allowed artists, consciously or not, to speak of contemporary issues beyond imperialism and conquest. Uncovering those issues, Framing First Contact forces us to think about why we tell the stories we do, and why those stories matter.
