Book excerpt: This stunning, colorful, and vastly diverse art collection showcases 100 paintings of Walt Disney's Mickey Mouse by contemporary pop artist Tennessee Loveless. Explore Tennessee's fascinating methodology: a story about the power of art, overcoming obstacles, and following your dreams. When he was growing up in the southern United States, Tennessee Loveless didn't know that he was so different from other children in his grade school class. Then one day, he and his classmates were asked to choose a purple object in the room. Everyone else seemed to find this an easy task, while Tennessee slumped down, paralyzed with fear. He couldn't do it. His teacher picked him up, at which point he started crying. Tennessee's parents were called; tests were done; and Tennessee was diagnosed with limited achromatopsia, which is the state of being almost completely color-blind. Tennessee's inability to distinguish most hues has, if anything, made him obsessed with the formation of patterns, objects, and shapes. Early on, he became attracted to the destruction of white space and captivated with the idea of filling in anything lacking in form with a pattern. Later, he learned in color-theory books what hues complemented or contrasted each other appropriately and went on to develop his own numerically based color indexing system. In creating his Mickey Mouse art collection, Tennessee uses bold colors and patterns to evoke an immediate visual impact. He is driven by his passion for painting people, iconic images, and his own visual iconography in a way that strikes an emotional and nostalgic connection through command over the one thing he is blind to: color.

The section on Tennessee's rich literary history includes such writers as James Agee, Robert Penn Warren, and Evelyn Scott, while the performing arts are represented by a wealth of storytellers along with two centuries of stage history. Finally, Tennessee is home to - and originator of - much of the music that we know as distinctively American. This book was released on 1988 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This pioneering study has been meticulously assembled through extensive fieldwork throughout Tennessee. Lifestyles of Tennesseans prior to 1850 ranged from mountain cabins to plantation mansions and the furnishings were designed to accommodate either setting. Here is a variety of desks, bookcases, and secretaries; sideboards, presses, cupboards, dressers, wardrobes, bureaus and bedsteads; sugar chests and cellarets; candlestands and shaving stands and washstands; cradles, bed steps, chairs, benches, sofas, and tables in dozens of sizes, uses, and names. Featuring many pieces from private collections never before documented, The Art and Mystery of Tennessee Furniture chronicles the originality of design and decoration, the choices of woods, and the simplicity and sophistication that signifies "made in Tennessee." The authors consider sources of labor, location of shops, volume of production, and marketing techniques. Just as important, the authors have conducted exhaustive research into the identities of Tennessee artisans and the furniture industry, and the book includes a checklist of 1,400 furniture makers working in Tennessee prior to 1850. This will be the definitive study for years to come.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States government got into the art business when it instituted a series of programs to keep artists working during the Depression years. Tennessee received its fair share, and most of the original thirty are still in existence. A few have been moved to different locations, but the author notes that most of the murals “are still on that same wall in the same small post office in that same small town where they were placed so long ago.” Unfortunately, many people are not aware of these murals—even in the areas where they are located. Written for the purpose of enhancing the knowledge of Tennesseans about the murals found in their post offices, this book will be of interest to artists and historians as well. Hull has included numerous photographs along with his descriptions of each mural and its composition, the mural’s relation to history, and a biographical sketch of each artist.

The correspondence and letters created during this time provide a fascinating glimpse of our nation's history. The author's research reveals the efforts of the government and local communities during this time. Not every community was thrilled with the idea of the subject matter or money spent on artwork for their local post office building. The murals were installed in small communities throughout Tennessee on purpose. They were meant to bring significant art to everyday Americans. This is public art and the post office was the most public of places during this era. Packed with full color images, Tennessee Post Office Murals celebrates these wonderful pieces of art as they exist today.

Book excerpt: "This book presents two decades of research at First Unnamed Cave, a precontact dark zone cave art site in East Tennessee. Discovered in 1994, First Unnamed Cave ushered in an extensive and systematic effort to research precontact cave art sites in the Eastern Woodlands and helped steer archaeological cave research for the following decades. Research into First Unnamed Cave made it clear that ancient peoples of the Eastern Woodlands, and especially in the Southeast, had practiced a widespread tradition of cave art production in the dark zones of some of the region's many caves, and these glyphs and drawings represented a deep religious tradition among early native peoples"--

Book excerpt: One of the most exuberant move palaces of the South, the Tennesse Theatre is a Jazz Age spectacle, a glimmer of a brifely extravagant era, a bold architectural celebration of an astonishing and suddenly popular new form of art. The motion picture changed the way Americans experienced their world, within its broad region, the Tennesseee became the superlative venue for that experiences. Despite its reputation as the finest, the most expensive, the theater with chandeliers and original art and antiques in its lobby, the Tennessee was also the largest, the busiest, and the most popular...Exclusiveness is one of the Tennessee's most effective illusions. After almost a century, the Tennessee is still obligatory on any trip to Knoxville, one of these sights you have to witness at least at once. Designed with dozens of shapes and countless colors to awe, it is distinct in appearance from every other theater in the world. It's a complex and fascinating artifact. But the Tennessee is also a practical edifice, a modern venue for classical music, opera, rock, jazz, bluegrass, and dozens of other genres that benefit from the old theater's excellent acoutiscs, praised in the national media for the quaility of its sound.
