Book excerpt: Excerpt from Public Speaking and Debate: A Manual for Advocates and Agitators Many years ago I printed an outline book on this subject (Public Speaking and Debate) for the use of persons who found learned treatises on oratory uninteresting, or too profound to be intelligible. Though dealing alone with the Rudiments of the art, it was reprinted in America, and in 1853 the New York Tribune described it as being 'unpretentious and practical.' After the experience of forty years, I write a new book, and trust the reader will find the same qualities in it. In 1862, the Rev. Mr Vickers of Boston, America, then visiting England, informed me that he took up, in a New York book-shop, a copy of a work entitled. Public Speaking and Debate, by John Bower. Upon opening it he found that it was an American edition of Public Speaking and Debate, by G. J. Holyoake, with the name of the author borne by another. This, I hope, may be taken as proof that the book was thought useful by the new author. But a testimony of which I have always been proud was that of Wendell Phillips-whom Mr Bright said had the most eloquent voice which ever spoke the English tongue. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended to give practical advice to anyone embarking upon a career involving advocacy or public speaking. Its authors are Derek Halbert and Hayley Whitaker from the University of Chester Law School. Derek spent 24 years as a member of the bar in chambers in Chester and then more than 20 years as a Circuit Judge until his retirement in September 2015. In October 2015 he was appointed an Honorary Senior Lecturer in Law and it is estimated that during his 44 years as a member of the legal profession, he made or listened to approximately 56,000 speeches. Hayley is also a member of the bar of England and Wales and a Lecturer in Law. She is the tutor with responsibility for Advocacy and Public Speaking and so has considerable expertise in the needs of students in this area. The combined experience of the authors forms the basis of this book and they cover topics such as: twelve rules for speaking in public, how to prepare a speech, how to prepare a case for court, how to research and present a legal argument, examination in chief, cross-examination, ethics and professional conduct and alternative dispute resolution. The result is a book which is, in the words of The Rt Hon. The Lord Thomas of Cwmgiedd, Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales: 'an indispensable companion to any student aspiring to the highest standards of advocacy.'

Book excerpt: Argumentation: The Art of Civil Advocacy teaches students the principles of argumentation as a practical way to engage in interpersonal and public deliberation. Authors Larry Underberg and Heather Norton offer a unique approach for creating civil discourse by encouraging students to consider how they argue with others to enhance or diminish opportunities for future dialogue. A variety of everyday examples are provided in the text to demonstrate how well-reasoned argumentation can strengthen communities and create productive citizenship. Students gain a better understanding for the situations, environments, and relationships that form the context for an advocate, and how those factors can influence discourse.
