Download or read book Views of a Vanishing Frontier written by John Canfield Ewers and published by Joslyn Art Museum. This book was released on 1984 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Commemorating the 150th anniversary of the expedition of the German prince Maximilian of Wied and the Swiss artist Karl Bodmer to North America, the traveling exhibition “Views of a Vanishing Frontier” visually recreates the historic journey into the early-nineteenth-century wilderness. The show was organized by the Joslyn Art Museum, where The Inter-North Art Foundation, owner of the priceless Bodmer collection, has placed it on permanent loan. It depicts the epic journey chronologically, combining Bodmer’s magnificent watercolors, Maximilian’s written accounts of the expedition, and artifacts collected by Maximilian. This catalogue offers a broad sampling from the show—thirty-four color and thirty-five black and white reproductions that will delight the most demanding connoisseurs. The pictorial record is complemented by selections from Maximilian’s writings. In addition, a long essay by John C. Ewers, Ethnologist Emeritus, Smithsonian Institution, examines the ethnological and historical significance of Bodmer’s pictures of Indians, which authorities have judged the finest, most faithful likenesses made before the introduction of photography. The book includes a biography of Maximilian—the prototypical nineteenth-century scientist—by Joseph C. Porter, curator of western American history and ethnology at the Center for Western Studies, Joslyn Art Museum. In a third essay, David C. Hunt, curator of western American art, and Marsha V. Gallagher, curator of material culture at the Center for Western Studies, trace the expedition’s travels to the upper Missouri and review their extraordinary trip of 1832-34. Published by the Center for Western Studies, Joslyn Art Museum and distributed by the University of Nebraska Press.
Download or read book Modern Taste written by Tim Benton and published by Fundacion Juan March. This book was released on 2014 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern taste: Art Deco in Paris, 1910-1935' offers readers an opportunity to appreciate, examine, assess and enjoy an artistic movement that defies easy definition but which has been described as "the last of the total styles": Art Deco.0The book aims to question the almost total absence of Art Deco from the history of modern art and from curatorial practice, and to vindicate--as some exemplary cases did in the wake of the Deco revival from the 1970s onwards--not only the evident beauty of Art Deco but also the fascination exerted by this singularly modern phenomenon with all its cultural and artistic complexity.0What we know as Art Deco was an alternative style to the avant-garde. It stood for a modernity that was pragmatic and ornamental rather than utopian and functional, and it became the great shaper of modern desire and taste, leaving its characteristic stamp on Western society and capitalism in the early decades of the 20th century.0Comprehensive and beautifully designed, 'Modern taste' includes nearly 400 works in a wide array of media: painting, sculpture, furniture, fashion design, jewelry, film, architecture, glassware and ceramics are all represented, alongside the photography, drawings and advertisements that helped create "the modern taste."0Exhibition: Fundacíon Juan March, Madrid, Spain (26.03-28.06.2015).

Book Synopsis Designing Disney's Theme Parks by : Centre canadien d'architecture
Download or read book Designing Disney's Theme Parks written by Centre canadien d'architecture and published by Flammarion-Pere Castor. This book was released on 1997 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the day it opened in July 1955, in an event given live TV coverage, Disneyland has been a key symbol of contemporary American culture. It has been both celebrated and attacked as the ultimate embodiment of consumer society, a harbinger of shopping-mall culture, a symbol of American hegemony in entertainment, the epitome of fantasy, simulation, pastiche, and the blurring of distinctions between reality and mass-media imagery. Yet for all the power of Disneyland as metaphor, almost no one has discussed the making of this unique place, with its far-flung colonies in Florida, Japan, and France. Written to accompany an exhibition at the Canadian Centre for Architecture in Montreal, "Designing Disney's Theme Parks: The Architecture of Reassurance" is the first book to look beyond the multiple myths of Disneyland. Uniting a roster of authors chosen from wide-ranging disciplines, this study is the first to examine the influence of Disneyland on both our built environment and our architectural imagination. Tracing the relationship of the Disney parks to their historical forbears, it charts Disneyland's evolution from one man's personal dream to a multinational enterprise, a process in which the Disney "magic" has moved ever closer to the real world. Editor Karal Ann Marling, Professor of Art History and American Studies at the University of Minnesota, draws upon her pioneering work in the Disney archives to reconstruct and analyze the intentions and strategies behind the parks. She is joined by Marty Sklar, Vice Chairman and Principal Creative Executive of Walt Disney Imagineering, historian Neil Harris, art historian Erika Doss, geographer Yi-Fu Tuan, critic Greil Marcus, and architectFrank Gehry to provide a unique perspective on one of the great post-war American icons.
