Book excerpt: Excerpt from Art and Archaeology, Vol. 6 Niehaus is possessed of an intense love for mythological and classical themes. His Cestus, his Athlete with the Scraper, both in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and his Neptune Foun tain Figure, are among the best exam ples of his treatment of the classic theme. Even in his man with the drill commemorating the discovery of oil at Titusville, Pa., we have a nude figure instinct with classic spirit and yet mod ern in the very best sense. One cannot contemplate any of these works with out realizing that in them we have the same feeling which inspired the artists of old Hellas, still alive in our own day. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Art and Archaeology, Vol. 2: July, 1915 December, 1915 O closely does the human figure used as a support correspond to the architecture in which it is found, that the historical development of the sculpture and of the architecture can be treated as parallel. This sculpture, as it will be considered in the present discus sion, comprises those human figures that are used, truly or ostensibly, for purposes of vertical support. The male figures are Atlantes, or Telamones the female are Caryatids, and the latter name may be suitably applied to angels employed in this way, for their sex is ambiguous. Such a form of supporting member is not an essential feature; it is rather an exceptional and arbitrary one. Classical sculpture has but few types to show, and the Middle Ages are still poorer in exam ples. In Renaissance times the Greek and Roman forms were freely used in Italian sepulchral monuments, and later these supporting figures took their most unrestrained and irregular development in Baroque architecture, especially in Germany. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Art and Archaeology, Vol. 4 Athena Hail, Athena! Proud daughter of a noble race divine! Enthroned upon thy sacred hill whose splendor once did shine On all the world around. Unrivalled on that lovely throne, Thy beauty dimmed the luster of the glorious Parthenon, The marvel of all ages past - that matchless temple rare, Which held the pearl of Hellas, thy majestic form so fair Wrought fine of gold and ivory, that Phidias did make live With touch divine, which his great soul alone knew how to give. I approach thy sacred temple and in silence bow my head, And hear again the echo of illustrious footsteps dead, I stand before the stately pile of Doric columns old, On which the dying sunlight falls and turns them into gold. The sculptured gods and heroes which its pediment did fill, Now lie in exile far away in England cold and chill. Confined within those gloomy walls, their spirit ever sighs To be restored to Hellas; and beneath her azure skies To rest once more, and watch the clouds that drift like rosy dreams Across a sky of turquoise hue, where mist of violet gleams. Where silvery mountains bend their slope towards a sea of blue, And perfumed winds caress their brows of classic beauty pure. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Peabody Museum, Vol. 4: American Archaeology and Ethnology Harvard University Papers Since the first edition of this pamphlet appeared in the year 1897, investigation in this department of science has made such marked progress, notwithstanding the slight amount of material, that a revision has now become desirable. It can be readily understood, that a new science, an investigation on virgin soil, such as the Maya study is, makes more rapid progress and develops more quickly than one pertaining to some old, much explored territory. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ancient Art and Its Remains: Or a Manual of the Archaeology of Art It would certainly have been desirable to have the references throughout the work verified, but I was withheld from making this addition to my labour, by their immense number, my other engage ments, and the difficulty Of getting access to the works referred to, many Of which are not to be found in any Of our public libraries. However, I have in numerous instances consulted the authorities quoted, when I wished to clear up any doubt or obscurity; and on such occasions I have very rarely discovered any inaccuracy in the citation. When I was aware Of any foreign work having been translated into English I transferred the reference to the translation.
