Download or read book Hellenistic Lives written by Plutarch and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-01-14 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alexander * Demosthenes * Phocion * Eumenes * Demetrius * Pyrrhus * Agis and Cleomenes * Aratus * Philopoemen * Flamininus This selection of ten Lives traces the history of Hellenistic Greece from the rise of Macedon and Alexander's conquest of the Persian empire to the arrival of the Romans. Plutarch's biographies of eminent politicians, rulers, and soldiers combine vivid portraits of their subjects with a wealth of historical information; they constitute a uniquely important source for the period. We see how Greek politics changed as Macedon's power grew, and we learn of the warlords who followed Alexander. Resistance to Macedon is reflected in the Lives of Demosthenes and Aratus, and that of Agis and Cleomenes, two revolutionary kings of Sparta. The volume concludes with the emergence of Rome in Greek affairs, and the life of Flamininus, the Roman general who defeated Philip V of Macedon. Plutarch's elegant style combines anecdote and erudition, humour and psychological insight, consummately translated by Robin Waterfield and introduced by Andrew Erskine. These Lives from the Hellenistic period complement Greek Lives and Roman Lives in Oxford World's Classics. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.
Book Synopsis India as Described by Megasthenes and Arrian by : Ekansh Awasthi
Download or read book India as Described by Megasthenes and Arrian written by Ekansh Awasthi and published by WebGuruCool. This book was released on 2024-03-03 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From times immemorial, India, as a country, has been of great interest to the world owing to its dynamic culture and vast diversity. This has attracted many travelers and historians to India who either visited it or read extensively about it with the help of sources available to them. Of all these, Greek writers and historians visited India extensively, especially from the times of Alexander and left detailed accounts about the country. These accounts are known as classical accounts which are an important source to study the history of ancient India, undoubtedly from the perspectives of the foreigners. Megasthenes and Arrian were such two writers who had left detailed account of contemporary India. Their accounts discuss and describe various aspects of the country like its myths and legends, its geography and agriculture, its wildlife and landscape, its administration, its society and most importantly the people who formed the Indian society. These descriptions have been dealt with in detail under two sections for the descriptions or accounts left by Megasthenes and Arrian respectively. Although these accounts are vivid and describe India in detail, yet they need to be carefully assessed at times, sometimes by comparative studies or general logic, since these were left by foreign writers who often did not used to have a clear idea about the foreign land with which they were interacting. Therefore, if and when possible and necessary, the same has been done in this work as well.

Book Synopsis Alexander the Great in Arrian’s ›Anabasis‹ by : Vasileios Liotsakis
Download or read book Alexander the Great in Arrian’s ›Anabasis‹ written by Vasileios Liotsakis and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2019-05-06 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arrian’s Alexandrou Anabasis constitutes the most reliable account at our disposal about Alexander the Great's campaign in Asia. However, whereas the work has been thoroughly studied as a historical source, its literary qualities have been relatively neglected, with no autonomous monograph existing on this matter. Vasileios Liotsakis fills this gap in the studies of Alexander the Great’s literary tradition, by offering the first monograph on Arrian’s compositional strategies. Liotsakis focuses on the narrative techniques and verbal choices, through which Arrian allows praise and criticism to intermingle in his portrait of the Macedonian king. His main point of argument is that Arrian systematically exploits an abundance of narrative means (military descriptions, presentation of peoples, march-narratives, anachronies, and epic elements) in order to draw the reader’s attention not only to Alexander’s intellectual skills but also to the fact that the king was gradually corrupted by his success. This book puts Arrian’s literary contrivances under the microscope, sheds new light on unexplored aspects of the Anabasis’ narrative arrangement, and contributes to the studies of Alexander’s prosopography in Classical historiography.
