Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Penned in the mid-1970s, People Movements in the Punjab gives an accurate analysis of the history of the church in the Punjab. After spending 12 years ministering in Pakistan, the authors set about finding the answers to the following questions: · What caused the church in the Punjab to grow from the 1880s into the first half of the 20th century? · Which missionary methods were effective, and which were ineffective? · What segments of society proved responsive? · Are any of these factors part of the present-day scene? Based on primary sources, including church and mission records, missionary and national leaders' biographies, and census reports, the author's well-written research provides a profound view of the churches' growth in the Punjab. The book includes a substantial appendix, "A Brief Comparative Study of Other Churches in Pakistan," which gives a wealth of information. And although this study is based on the growth of the church in Pakistan, the pattern of development and church growth principles apply to scores of areas on the Indian subcontinent as well. This authentic church history has great relevance for the church and her leaders today.

Book Synopsis Peacebuilding in Pakistan by : Heike Ruhland
Download or read book Peacebuilding in Pakistan written by Heike Ruhland and published by Waxmann Verlag. This book was released on 2019 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Pakistan was carved out of India in 1947 as a homeland for the Muslims of the subcontinent, it was envisioned as a secular state where non-Muslims would be granted freedom of religion and equal citizenship. However, the subsequent historical events led to a fast Islamization of nearly every part of public life and discrimination against the country's religious minorities, who today make up less than 4 per cent of the overall population. Based on extensive field work involving more than 100 non-structured qualitative interviews, this study explores the situation of the religious minorities and the dynamics of interfaith peacebuilding in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. Primary focus was laid on the practice of interfaith dialogue, which - given the draconic blasphemy laws - differs from interfaith dialogue as conceived of in the West. Additionally, other peacebuilding measures, as offered by various non-governmental organizations, were taken into account, be they advocacy, promotion of human rights and unbiased education, or policy negotiation with the government. Heike Ruhland holds two master's degrees, one in Islamic Studies (University of Zurich) and one in International Information Management (University of Hildesheim). She attained her PhD from the Academy of World Religions, University of Hamburg.

Book excerpt: The Handbook of Denominations in the United States has long been the gold standard for reference works about religious bodies in America. The purpose of this Handbook is to provide accurate and objective information about the most significant Christian traditions and denominations in the United States today. It contains descriptions of over 200 distinct Christian denominations as well as overviews of the several major Christian traditions to which they belong—based on shared historical and theological roots and commitments. The information for each denomination has been provided by the religious organizations themselves and focuses on the denominations' doctrines, statistics, and histories. The 14th edition is completely updated with current statistics, new denominations, and recent trends. The book has been made more useful and manageable by moving very small groups into broader articles while giving more detail and description to the large and influential denominations.
