Book excerpt: Located at the foot of the majestic Santa Rita Mountains in southeastern Arizona, Sonoita is known for its rolling grasslands, grazing cattle, and working cowboys in well-worn jeans. Ranching blossomed in the early 1880s when the Southern Pacific Railroad linked Benson to Nogales, allowing local cattlemen to ship their livestock to market by train. It would be another 30 years before the first Sonoita Post Office was established, with postmistress Clara Hummel dispensing the mail from her home. The area would remain unincorporated--the closest pioneer neighbors were miles away over dirt roads--but the citizenry grew in friendship and cooperation, developing a community spirit that still exists today. Locals and visitors alike enjoy Sonoita's neighboring communities of Patagonia, where a historic train depot evokes memories of the town's role as a distribution center for area mines and ranches, and Elgin, where old-time cattle ranches now share fence lines with the lush vineyards of Winery Row.

Book excerpt: The Appleton-Whittell Research Ranch is a tract of 8,000 acres on the Sonoita Plain that was established in 1968 by the Appleton family and is now part of the sanctuary system of the National Audubon Society. To all appearances it is an ordinary piece of land, but for the last 35 years it has been treated in an extraordinary way - by leaving it alone. No grazing to influence grass production. No dam building to hold back flash floods. No pest control. No firefighting. By employing such nonaction, might we gain a glimpse of what this land was like hundreds, even thousands, of years ago? Through essays and photographs focusing on the Research Ranch Sanctuary and surrounding area, this book reveals the complex ecology and unique aesthetics of its grasslands and savannas. Carl and Jane Bock and Stephen E. Strom share a passion for the remarkable beauty found here, and in their book they describe its environment, biodiversity, and human history.

Book excerpt: This book is a real Wild West story, told in "their way" by the people who lived in the Patagonia-Sonoita region of southeastern Arizona. Life here was hard, and the stories of how people lived and followed their instincts to survive may touch your heart, make you laugh or cry, or maybe both. Their bravery, hardships and desire for a new future developed southern Arizona. There are stories of Indians, priests, miners, ranchers, good men and bad, life and death, and much more. The author used information from various reputable publications for background but concentrated primarily on stories told by people who lived them or whose ancestors did. She tape-recorded the recollections of hundreds of local residents and also included information from newspapers, family records, diaries, memoirs, and even cemeteries. From the many people interviewed comes a clear picture of a country hard won, much loved, well remembered and treasured.
