Book excerpt: This United States Army manual, Army Techniques Publication ATP 3-04.7 Army Aviation Maintenance October 2020, provides techniques concerning aviation maintenance operations from aviation brigade to platoon level. The primary focus of this ATP involves performing maintenance, across the aviation brigade, within an aviation maintenance company (AMC) and aviation support company (ASC). It also includes information for sustainment-enabling organizations at echelons above brigade across the Army sustainment enterprise. The principle audience for ATP 3-04.7 are commanders, maintenance leaders, officers, noncommissioned officers (NCOs), maintenance technicians, and maintenance trainers. The term 'aircraft' refers to all Army aircraft types (rotary wing [RW] aircraft, fixed-wing [FW] aircraft, and unmanned aircraft systems [UAS]); unless a specific aircraft has been identified in this publication. The terms combat aviation brigade (CAB) and AMC align with the Army's force design for Army Aviation. Terms and definitions for which this publication is the proponent publication are boldfaced in the text. For other definitions shown in the text, the term is italicized, and the number of the proponent publication follows the definition. ATP 3-04.7 applies to all Active Army, Army National Guard/Army National Guard of the United States, United States Army Reserve, civilian, and contract maintenance personnel. Commanders must consider the contents of this document and the specific circumstances in which they find themselves (national military objectives, available forces, threat capabilities, and rules of engagements) when planning maintenance operations.

This book was released on 2017-10-03 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Army Techniques Publication ATP 3-04.7 Army Aviation Maintenance SEPTEMBER 2017 ATP 3-04.7 shapes the way Army aviation maintenance is to be conducted. Aviation maintenance is very complex and unlike any other type of combat service support (CSS) organization. Aviation maintainers must be able to support the aviation force as it is designed to fight, not as it is organized for command and control. To accomplish this, aviation units must be modular in design. For aviation maintenance applications, modularity is intended to facilitate, at the tactical level, the task organization of logistics to support a designated aviation task force and to effectively implement "fix forward" aviation maintenance doctrine. Aviation maintenance support has never been more critical than in today's operating environment, where personnel and aircraft remain in high demand due to high operational tempo (OPTEMPO). Today's technically complex aircraft demand equally experienced aircraft maintainers and maintenance managers. The ability of an aviation unit to perform its wartime mission is numerically represented by its aircraft operational readiness rates. Higher operational readiness rates are a direct result of effective maintenance and logistics management by all aviation maintenance commanders/leaders, officers, technicians, and noncommissioned officers in charge (NCOICs). Maintenance is critical for all aircraft weapon platforms, systems, subsystems, and aviation ground support equipment. The failure of an operating aircraft system or subsystem, resulting from improper maintenance procedures, can have catastrophic and deadly consequences to personnel and equipment. Aviation maintainers must adhere to the latest applicable aircraft technical manuals (TMs) and references when conducting maintenance on their assigned aircraft. Each aviation maintenance company (AMC) and aviation support company (ASC) now possesses the capability to conduct split-based operations within a single theater of operations. Each AMC is responsible for performing field maintenance on its assigned/attached aircraft. ASCs assigned to aviation support battalions (ASBs) provide field maintenance support by conducting intermediate aviation maintenance according to the maintenance allocation chart (MAC). Aviation maintenance is training. Commander and leader must balance mission requirements while continuously assessing a unit's maintenance posture. The critical link between maintenance and readiness cannot be emphasized enough. This ATP ties regulatory guidance to practice, and serves as the primary reference for effectively managing aviation maintenance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analytical schism has developed over differing assessments of China's military modernization. Underlying this debate are at least two key questions. First, will the ongoing China's People's Liberation Army (PLA) modernization provide China with significant offensive power projection and/or preemptive capability? If so, by when? Second, does the pace and success of China's military modernization constitute a threat to the United States and/or its friends and allies in the Asia-Pacific region? At the source of these differing views on the pace and likely success of the PLA modernization is a lack of hard evidence, aggravated by a Chinese tendency to conceal both strengths and weaknesses. There are also analysts who are locked into positions on the PLA that the evidence seems unable to alter. Lack of information is often muddied by anecdotal knowledge, sometimes provided by Chinese interlocutors, that may be impossible to confirm or refute. In addition, a large body of conventional wisdom about the PLA has built up over time, which may inhibit fresh reassessment. Finally, peer comparisons of the PLA to the U.S. military, which is without equal in the post-Cold War period, may shape analysis of the PLA's capabilities and shortfalls. As a result, conclusions about China's military modernization often leave considerable room for interpretation on any side of an argument. The policy decisions made today based in part on the absence of hard analysis will likely haunt U.S. and allied policy and interests well into the 21st century, as China's comprehensive strength and historic aspirations mature. In order to minimize miscalculations about the PLA modernization, debate is essential, for it can help reduce the twin analytical evils of overestimation and underestimation. Debate can reduce wishful thinking or demonization about China's strategic capability and intentions. It may also preclude counterproductive self-imposed constraints on U.S. policy options based on fear of self-fulfilling prophecies of a China threat. Active debate, finally, can lead to a reevaluation of old, well-worn assumptions, and spur greater exploitation of publicly available information about the PLA and China's national security. All of this would potentially help to develop a clearer picture of China's People's Liberation Army After Next into the 21st century.

Military casualties and the costs of conflict sap public support for war and for political and military leaders. Combat drones offer an unprecedented ability to reduce these costs by increasing accuracy, reducing the risks to civilians, and protecting military personnel from harm. These advantages should make drone strikes more popular than operations involving ground troops. Yet many critics believe drone warfare will make political leaders too willing to authorize wars, weakening constraints on the use of force. Because combat drones are relatively new, these arguments have been based on anecdotes, a handful of public opinion polls, or theoretical speculation. Drones and Support for the Use of Force uses experimental research to analyze the effects of combat drones on Americans’ support for the use of force. The authors’ findings—that drones have had important but nuanced effects on support for the use of force—have implications for democratic control of military action and civil-military relations and provide insight into how the proliferation of military technologies influences foreign policy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book is a 2022 Nautilus Gold Medal winner in the category "World Cultures' Transformational Growth & Development". It states that the societal fault lines of our times are deeply intertwined and that they confront us with challenges affecting the security, fairness and sustainability of our societies. The author, Prof. Dr. Patrick Huntjens, argues that overcoming these existential challenges will require a fundamental shift from our current anthropocentric and economic growth-oriented approach to a more ecocentric and regenerative approach. He advocates for a Natural Social Contract that emphasizes long-term sustainability and the general welfare of both humankind and planet Earth. Achieving this crucial balance calls for an end to unlimited economic growth, overconsumption and over-individualisation for the benefit of ourselves, our planet, and future generations. To this end, sustainability, health, and justice in all social-ecological systems will require systemic innovation and prioritizing a collective effort. The Transformative Social-Ecological Innovation (TSEI) framework presented in this book serves that cause. It helps to diagnose and advance innovation and spur change across sectors, disciplines, and at different levels of governance. Altogether, TSEI identifies intervention points and formulates jointly developed and shared solutions to inform policymakers, administrators, concerned citizens, and professionals dedicated towards a more sustainable, healthy and just society. A wide readership of students, researchers, practitioners and policy makers interested in social innovation, transition studies, development studies, social policy, social justice, climate change, environmental studies, political science and economics will find this cutting-edge book particularly useful. “As a sustainability transition researcher, I am truly excited about this book. Two unique aspects of the book are that it considers bigger transformation issues (such as societies’ relationship with nature, purpose and justice) than those studied in transition studies and offers analytical frameworks and methods for taking up the challenge of achieving change on the ground.” - Prof. Dr. René Kemp, United Nations University and Maastricht Sustainability Institute

Book excerpt: Growth unleashes benefits beyond the economic. It revitalizes organizations and invigorates the people in them, creating energy, a sense of purpose, and the glow of being on a winning team. Like the alchemy of old, it seeks to transform the everyday into the exalted by means that seem little short of magical. Yet growth is often elusive, achieved at unacceptable costs, or managed in fits and starts. Based on over three years of research and application at high-performing companies around the world, The Alchemy of Growth is a comprehensive, practical approach to initiating, achieving, and sustaining profitable growth—today and tomorrow. As the book shows, the secret is to manage business opportunities across three time horizons at once: extending and defending core businesses, building new businesses, and seeding options for the future. The Alchemy of Growth offers managers at all levels the tools and concepts for investing in the right initiatives, capabilities, and talent to propel their companies into the future.
