Book excerpt: This publication, Field Manual FM 1-05 Religious Support January 2019, is a key integrating publication that links the doctrine for the Chaplain Corps with Army and joint doctrine. FM 1-05 provides operational guidance for commands and religious support personnel at all echelons and forms the foundation for all United States Army Chaplain Center and School curricula. This manual contains four chapters. Chapter 1 describes religious support foundations, including the historical precedents for the Army Chaplain Corps as well as its roles, missions, and functions. Chapter 2 delineates the current operational environment, including the requirement to provide religious support across the range of military operations. Chapter 3 details the execution of religious support at the different echelons of command within our Army. Chapter 4 depicts planning for religious support across the conflict continuum using the operations process. The principles of Army religious support doctrine presented in this manual enable chaplains and religious affairs specialists to apply creative, flexible, and innovative approaches to specific missions and operational environments. Chaplains and religious affairs specialists serving in a joint force land component command or a joint task force should refer to JP 3-0, Joint Operations, JG 1-05, Religious Affairs in Joint Operations, and other joint planning publications for further guidance. FM 1-05 is nested with JP 3-0 and JG 1-05. The Army is the principal land force, organized, trained, and equipped to conduct prompt and sustained operations on land. The Army is responsible for deploying forces at any time, in any environment, against any adversary and must be able to operate for extended periods across the range of military operations. In order to support the free exercise of religion within the Army, chaplain sections and unit ministry teams must be able to function within operational environments possessing a full range of threats. Chaplain sections and unit ministry teams sustain Soldiers across the range of military operations; from military engagement, security cooperation, and deterrence, to crisis response and limited contingency operations, to large-scale combat operations. Everything the Army does for our nation is done by Soldiers who are supported by their Family members. The principles of Army religious support doctrine presented in this field manual enable chaplain sections and unit ministry teams to apply creative, flexible, and innovative approaches to specific missions and operational environments as it supports the Soldier and Family. Chaplains have served in the U.S. Army since the first days of the American Revolution and many have died in combat. These chaplains represented more than 120 separate denominations and faith groups from across America. Seven chaplains have been awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism above and beyond the call of duty. Many chaplains and religious affairs specialists have received other medals for valor. The personal needs of Soldiers, the mission at hand, their own faith, and emerging religious support doctrine, guided these chaplains and religious affairs specialists as they met the goal to uphold the free exercise of religion guaranteed by the First Amendment of the Constitution of the United States.

This book was released on 2012-05-03 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Chaplain Corps is the Army's primary agency for practically ensuring the free exercise of religion for America's soldiers. This responsibility also applies to the Chaplain Corps' religious support to Army family members, Department of Army (DA) civilians, and other authorized personnel. The Chaplain Corps ensures free exercise of religion by executing the command religious programs of Army commanders. FM 1-05 establishes the Army's definitive doctrine for the execution of comprehensive religious support across the full spectrum of operations. It is founded upon the Army's operational doctrine articulated in FM 3-0 and FM 101-5 and other supporting documents. FM 1-05 is compatible with the joint religious support doctrine contained in JP 1-05. This doctrine pronounces that the personal delivery of religious support is the primary focus of the Chaplain Corps and places greater emphasis on the chaplain's role as an advisor to the commander. It takes into account emerging technology, possesses a broader focus on religious support at echelons above brigade, and speaks clearly to the interface between religious support operations and civil military operations. It is the authoritative, but not prescriptive, guide to the missions, roles, responsibilities, and duties the Chaplain Corps must execute to deliver comprehensive religious support. FM 1-05 provides guidance to commanders at all echelons responsible for providing command religious support programs to their units and organizations, as well as, to Chaplains, Chaplain Assistants and other personnel responsible to plan, prepare, and provide religious support to The Army. This guidance is the principle tool for professional education in the art of religious support operations. Trainers at all echelons should employ it as the authoritative guide for the planning and execution of religious support training. For overseas theaters, this doctrine applies to U.S. unilateral operations only, subject to applicable host nation laws and agreements.

This book was released on 2012-11-18 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 1 July 1952, Admiral Arthur W. Radford, commander-in-chief, U.S. Pacific Fleet, issued “A Guide for Religious Worship and Character Development in a U.S. Ship Without a Chaplain,” the first official guidance published for religious lay leaders. Prepared by the Pacific Fleet Chaplain George A. Russo's office, the document was only three pages long. It noted that commanding officers on ships without chaplains could select a volunteer to lead worship. For Protestants, the service had to be “commensurate with good taste and the spiritual needs of all worshippers.” Since the days of World War II, men and women of the sea services have willingly filled the gap for their faith groups as lay leaders when chaplains were not available to meet the needs of their fellow shipmates. At the close of that war, there were only a dozen or so faith groups officially represented in the military. Today, the Armed Forces Chaplains Board officially recognizes over 200 faith groups. Religious lay leaders play a vital role within the structure and ministry of the command religious program, as they assist the chaplain and religious program specialists in meeting the religious rights of sea-service personnel. Navy Tactical Reference Publication (NTRP) 1-05.1 will assist commanders, chaplains, and lay leaders as they provide for the constitutional free exercise of religion for sea-service personnel. Recognizing that religious identity is an integral part of the members of the armed services, Congress has established that the religious requirements of service members are to be accommodated by the respective services. The Department of the Navy (DON) tasks commanding officers (COs) with the establishment of a command religious program (CRP), which accommodates the religious needs, preferences, and rights of the members of their commands, eligible family members, and other authorized personnel. Per Joint Publication (JP) 1-02, “Department of Defense Dictionary of Military and Associated Terms,” religious support “consists of the entire spectrum of professional duties that a chaplain provides and performs in the dual role of religious leader and staff officer assisted by enlisted support personnel.” Navy chaplains manage and execute the CRP on behalf of the CO. Chaplains are authorized to provide for the religious ministry support (RMS) of members of their own faith. Per Title 10 and U.S. Navy regulations, chaplains may only provide public worship according to the manner and forms of their own religious organizations (ROs). However, chaplains are also responsible for facilitating the religious requirements of all authorized users through the management and execution of the CRP. Navy policy provides several options for facilitation. Chaplains provide faith-specific religious ministry to members of the chaplain's own faith group. Contract religious ministry professionals (CRMPs) may also be retained by the CRP to meet faith-specific needs. If a chaplain cannot meet the religious requirements of an authorized user and a CRMP is not available or practicable, the command may then appoint lay leaders to meet religious requirements.

Book excerpt: ADP 3-0, Operations, constitutes the Army's view of how to conduct prompt and sustained operations across multiple domains, and it sets the foundation for developing other principles, tactics, techniques, and procedures detailed in subordinate doctrine publications. It articulates the Army's operational doctrine for unified land operations. ADP 3-0 accounts for the uncertainty of operations and recognizes that a military operation is a human undertaking. Additionally, this publication is the foundation for training and Army education system curricula related to unified land operations. The principal audience for ADP 3-0 is all members of the profession of arms. Commanders and staffs of Army headquarters serving as joint task force (JTF) or multinational headquarters should also refer to applicable joint or multinational doctrine concerning the range of military operations and joint or multinational forces. Trainers and educators throughout the Army will use this publication as well.
