Book excerpt: Sua Sponte Latin for “Of Their Own Accord” The 75th Ranger Regiment’s Motto Army Rangers are not born. They are made. The modern 75th Ranger Regiment represents the culmination of 250 years of American soldiering. As a fighting force with our nation’s oldest and deepest tradition, the Regiment traces its origins to Richard Rogers’s Rangers during the prerevolutionary French and Indian War, through the likes of Francis Marion and John Mosby, to the five active Ranger battalions of the Second World War, and finally, to the four battalions of the current Ranger regiment engaged in modern combat. Granted unprecedented access to the training of this highly restricted component of America’s Special Operations Forces in a time of war, retired Navy captain Dick Couch tells the personal story of the young men who begin this difficult and dangerous journey to become Rangers. Many will try, but only a select few will survive to serve in the 75th Ranger Regiment. Sua Sponte follows a group of these aspiring young warriors through the crucible that is Ranger training and their preparation for direct-action missions in Afghanistan against America’s enemies, anywhere, any time, and under any conditions. I can't recommend it highly enough." —Bill Gates The era of autonomous weapons has arrived. Today around the globe, at least thirty nations have weapons that can search for and destroy enemy targets all on their own. Paul Scharre, a leading expert in next-generation warfare, describes these and other high tech weapons systems—from Israel’s Harpy drone to the American submarine-hunting robot ship Sea Hunter—and examines the legal and ethical issues surrounding their use. “A smart primer to what’s to come in warfare” (Bruce Schneier), Army of None engages military history, global policy, and cutting-edge science to explore the implications of giving weapons the freedom to make life and death decisions. A former soldier himself, Scharre argues that we must embrace technology where it can make war more precise and humane, but when the choice is life or death, there is no replacement for the human heart.

Book excerpt: When I saved the little boy from falling off the bleachers at the aquarium, I never imagined it would change my life. But his three Army Ranger dads had other plans for me, and sometimes the best things in life come when you least expect. I never planned on being a nanny to the most adorable twins on the planet, just like I'd never dreamt of living with three ripped, beautiful soldiers-turned-mercenaries, constantly working out in their Southold mansion to keep their hard bodies in Army Ranger shape. Yet here I am, alone on Long Island and out of money for med school. So when a chance rescue affords me the opportunity to get back on my feet, I'm more than willing to take on the responsibility... and all the delicious fringe benefits that come with it. But the men are lonely too, and our attraction is overwhelming. Week by week I'm tempted by three shredded, ridiculously-trained bodies, until lines are crossed and inhibitions are dropped and I find myself in bed with all three of them. Regrets? Absolutely none. Only that I hadn't found this part of my life sooner. Liam is as physically flawless as he is sweet, while Duncan's bright smile and broad-shouldered humor masks a much darker secret. Julius is the powerful, deadly loner of the group - relieved from command for undertaking a vengeful, near-suicide mission. Together my new lovers form the upper echelon of a rogue mercenary company, operating out of Manhattan. But when an edgy, almost impossible task calls them, one by one, to the far side of the world? It could open the door to all new possibilities... or spell the end of everything we've built together. NANNY FOR THE ARMY RANGERS is a thrilling stand-alone Military Reverse Harem Romance filled with humor, action, and suspense. HEA guaranteed!

Book excerpt: As long ago as 1957, U.S. Army Special Forces soldiers were in the Republic of Vietnam. going about their business of training, advising, and assisting members of the Vietnamese Army. Despite the old Army witticism about never volunteering for anything, the Special Forces soldier is. in fan, a double volunteer, having first volunteered for airborne training and then again for Special Forces training. From a very meager beginning but sustained by a strong motivation and confidence in his mission, the Special Forces soldier has marched through the Vietnam struggle in superb fashion. In 1957 some fifty-eight Vietnamese soldiers were given military training by Special Forces troops. Ten years later the Special Forces were advising and assisting over 40,000 paramilitary troops, along with another 40,000 Regional Forces and Popular Forces soldiers. This monograph traces the development and notes the progress, problems. successes, and failures of a unique program undertaken by the U.S. Army for the first lime in its history. It is hoped that all the significant lessons learned have been recorded and the many pitfalls of such a program uncovered. I am responsible for the conclusions reached, yet my thought processes could not escape the influence of the many outstanding officers and men in the Special Forces who joined in the struggle. Particularly, I must lake note of the contributions of the Special Forces noncommissioned officers, without question the most competent soldiers in the world. With the withdrawal of the Special Forces from Vietnam in 1971, the Army could honestly lay claim to a new dimension in ground warfare-the organized employment of a paramilitary force in sustained combat against a determined enemy. I know I speak for my predecessors and successors in claiming that the 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne) was the finest collection of professional soldiers ever assembled by the U.S. Army, anywhere, anytime. Francis John Kelly Colonel, Armor 1972
