Book excerpt: Excerpt from Army Hygiene Sir James mcgrigor gives a remarkable example of the extent to which an efficient medical staff may con duce to the success of military operations. He states that it was said with much truth by an eminent individual that he thought the extraordinary exertions of the medical officers of the army. Might be said to have decided the day at Vittoria; for their exertions had undoubtedly added a full division to the strength of Lord Wellington's army, and with out those or men, it is more than doubt ful if his lordship with all his unrivalled talents could have carried the day (autobiography, p. Nor is it alone in times of war that the great in fluence for good, of a well administered medical department becomes apparent. If we refer to the works that have from time to time been written by army me dical officers from that on gun-shot wounds, of date 1 563, by Thomas Gale, who seems to have been the first systematic British writer on matters connected withmilitary medicine and surgery - down to the present day, it will be seen that they have not been behind hand in suggesting those improvements in diagnosis and treatment of disease, which have rendered the present state of medical science so greatly in advance of what it was three centuries ago. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Military Hygiene and Sanitation This short treatise on Military Hygiene and Sanitation is founded on the lectures delivered by me while Professor of Hygiene at the Royal Army Medical College. I have not attempted to deal in detail with all the problems of hygiene, and in particular I have omitted - as, for instance, in the question of house drainage - those which are liberally treated in the ordinary textbooks. In considering the prevention of infectious diseases, also, I have limited myself to those which are most important in war. I have not therefore discussed such ailments as Malta fever and Tuberculosis, for instance, with, which the army is concerned mainly in peace-time, under conditions not differing materially from those which confront the Medical Officer of Health in civil practice. I have to acknowledge much kind assistance from Captain N. Dunbar Walker, Royal Army Medical Corps, who has helped me greatly with suggestions and in the preparation of some of the plates. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Military Hygiene; Especially Arranged for Officers, and Men of the Line There can be little or no doubt that the sanitation of the army would be greatly improved if line officers and enlisted men should become more interested in the subject, and cooperate more freely and intelligently with medical officers in the efforts to promote it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory and Practice of Military Hygiene For the preparation of a work on the subject of military hygiene, the author has no apologies to offer. Save a small collection of sanitary pre cepts, intended for the use of officers of the line, no book exclusively devoted to the preservation of the health of troops has been published in the English language in more than a generation. The more complete works on general hygiene contain much material which has no applicabil ity to the military service, and, on the other hand, they leave unnoticed a large number of subjects a knowledge of which is of the highest impor tance to the military sanitarian. For these reasons, many of the lessons learned by bitter experience in camp and garrison, during a period in which sanitary science has made its greatest progress, have been practically lost to medical officers of the present day, and the experience of the past few years has demonstrated the need of a text-book dealing directly with the sanitary problems peculiar to the military service. This it has been the endeavor of the author to supply in the present volume, which it is hoped will be found available not only as a book of reference for medical officers, in connection with their sanitary duties, but also as a practical guide to officers of the line, with respect to the care of troops over whom they have control. In view of the fact that this book is in tended for use under conditions in which recourse to a library of reference will rarely be practicable, it has been thought best not to increase the size of an already large volume by including a bibliographical index of the authorities, some twenty-seven hundred in number, referred to in the text or consulted in its preparation. A list of these authorities has, however, been preserved, and may be placed at the disposal of those who desire to go more fully into the vast subject of military hygiene. In conclusion, the author desires to express his great indebtedness to Colonel Charles Smart, Assistant surgeon-general, United States Army, at whose suggestion and through whose kindness the preparation of this work was undertaken, and whose encouragement and assistance rendered its com pletion possible. Possessed of an infinite knowledge of sanitary affairs, it is the misfortune of the military service that pressure of public business made it necessary for him to delegate the writing of this book to a less worthy pen. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Military Hygiene for Officers of the Line In its original form this work was an abstract in detached paragraphs of lectures on Military Hygiene given at the Infantry and Cavalry School at Fort Leavenworth, 1886-'90. It is now recast much after the style of those lectures, with such revision as the regulations and the progress of sanitary science require and it is sympathetically offered to the Line of the Army and to the National Guard. The constant effort has been to answer the natural inquiries of a line officer solicitous about his men. Subjects that belong exclusively to the medical staff have been omitted. An essay upon the care of troops in the field, prepared at the beginning of the Spanish war, is retained, revised and slightly extended, because the convenience of concentration seems to justify a repetition of what is somewhat disconnectedly set forth in earlier chapters. A work like this must be the expression of common knowledge and can make small claim to originality, but continual indebtedness is gratefully acknowledged to Parkes, to his immediate successors, and to contemporary workers in this field. Prolonged experience has tampered the opinions expressed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sanitation in War The definition suggests the advisability of seeking refuge in safe seclusion, and - ou being haled into the embarrassing prominence of the platform - I hasten to forestall detection by forth with confessing to a colossal ignorance of the science of hygiene. As regards the art of sanita tion, however, the medical officer is - necessarily less ignorant, and it is upon this factor in the important duty of maintaining the health of the army in the field that I would therefore concentrate attention. Sanitation, as I think you will agree, is not the subject that one would select with the object of being interesting, and the unpromising nature of the subject is enhanced by the difficulty caused by the fact that so many degrees of knowledge are represented in the audience. It is no easy matter to avoid, on the one hand, boring the Officer who has had considerable experience of camp life or. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Report on the Hygiene of the United States Army: With Descriptions of Military Posts Ou the afternoon preceding eaeh visit to the quarters, the jars intended for the reception of air were inspected, to determine their perfect dryness, and a corresponding number of twooounee. Viats were filled from the baryta reservoir, corked tightly, weighed, and the weight marked on the label of each. At the visit, the contents of the room were noted, and the walls and windows examined for the discovery of any notable inlets, by which time the jar was conceived to have attained the tempera tare of its surroundings. The air from on a level with the men's bunks, one and a half to two feet from the floor, was then driven into it, by a large robber syringe in the absence of a bellows, sixty fioreible strokes of the piston being made in each case, to insure the thorough charging of the jar with the air required. The contents of one of the baryta vials were poured in and the jar imme diately eorked with a tightly-fitting rubber cork, and agitated to diffuse the solution over its sides. The vial was also carefully eorked, and the jar and room for which it had been used, wgether with the ternperatnre, were noted on its label. On two occasions about 10 grams of the baryta solution were retained in the vial and tested with the acid, for the discovery of deterioration. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Military Surgery and Hygiene But surgery, like many other departments of knowledge which have been compelled to submit to this tyranny, and to contribute reluctantly to the perfection of a barbarous art, has, in its application to the purposes of war, we are happy to say, other and more legitimate ends. It is equally the mission of the Military Surgeon to prevent, as far as possible, all useless expenditure of life. In civilized war fare life is spared whenever a firelock is grounded, or an arm is disabled; and, so well is this understood, the wounded soldier does not hesitate to throw himself upon the mercy of his captors for surgical aid, since he is equally certain of receiving succor from the surgical corps of a foe as of a friend. Consider how much this serves to soften the savage aspect of war; that if battles must be fought, the results should be obtained with as little sacrifice of life, with as little mutilation and suffering as possible. The world is indebted to our profession for this. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
