Book excerpt: "Stop right there. It was a voice of measured power, a voice comfortable with command. With these words, we are introduced to a new character in the pantheon of heroic figures, a giant in stature and strength who is but too human in aspiration. Nature has favored him as undefeatable in combat, society has cast him as military champion, yet he longs for tranquility of home and delectation of family. What must he accomplish to earn the right to claim his desire? What must he sacrifice? The port of Girasol, known to all as the beautiful jewel, offers the giant a winters respite from his wanderings. He finds amicable welcome among denizens in the local tavern and there, too, he finds Soessa, the copper haired round girl who warms his heart through the coldest of nights. When the village is threatened by pirate siege, local moneylenders implore him to raise armed defense but, averse to presiding over even one more battle, the giant defers accepting their commission. He encounters trolls with peculiar dietary penchants and wondrous skills, who fathom greater threat concealed within folds of the pirate attack. For they remember the Demonic Titans vow to take as brother he who releases them from interment imposed in ages past by the Great Powers. It is Schadenfreude, master of the pirate fleet, manipulator of lives, who intends to redeem the Titans promise. His cruelty is exceeded only by their treachery, his madness by their craving. Town dwellers, bucolics of the country wide around, troll tribes, caravaneers from the distant east, and swamp-saurians crystallize alliances to resist their common enemy. However, their stand against the far stronger pirates is doomed without the giants aid. Devotion among the confederates to their families and to the beautiful jewel enables the giant to see his own thread in the grand tapestry of the ages and to choose a course of action by which he can both defend Girasol and attain the life of peace he seeks. Some of The Giants Supporting Characters A lizard of a man, the Saurian scout fell upon her with his teeth, biting and gnashing and tearing until she moved no more. The lizards tongue lapped blood from once beautiful flesh. He snickered quietly to himself, Sweet. Very sweet. How in mid winter did one furry little Tribal Luminary, the troll princess Mozin Bur Mai, bid Girasols harbor calm with no more than chant and seashell? One might sooner know why? than how?

For he shared something unique with his captorboth of them had survived the destruction of their worlds. And then they realized that the world on which they now lived was on the brink of a devastating war, and they were perhaps the only two sentient beings there who understood the ultimate sacrifice that might come from such a conflict. Could they save this world, or would they die with their adopted planet, humanitys orphans at the edge of space Hunter of Worlds: The Iduve were the most advanced spacefaring race in the galaxy. They traveled where they pleased in giant city-sized vessels, engrossed with their own affairs. The Iduve were humanoid, but they differed from Earths own humans in one significant way: they were pure predators incapable of human emotion. Aiela was a world-survey officer who found himself abducted to serve the Iduve clanship Ashanome. Forcibly mind-linked with two other captives, life for Aiela became wholly dedicated to the service of his captors. But then the Ashanome came to the world of Priamos, a war-torn planet caught in a struggle between humans and the alien race known as the amaut. When she discovered that her fugitive brother was hiding there, Chimele, leader of the Ashanome, was willing to sacrifice this entire world to destroy him. And Priamos only hope for survival lay with Aiela and his fellow captives
Book Synopsis The Visual Narrative Reader by : Neil Cohn
Download or read book The Visual Narrative Reader written by Neil Cohn and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-01-28 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sequential images are as natural at conveying narratives as verbal language, and have appeared throughout human history, from cave paintings and tapestries right through to modern comics. Contemporary research on this visual language of sequential images has been scattered across several fields: linguistics, psychology, anthropology, art education, comics studies, and others. Only recently has this disparate research begun to be incorporated into a coherent understanding. In The Visual Narrative Reader, Neil Cohn collects chapters that cross these disciplinary divides from many of the foremost international researchers who explore fundamental questions about visual narratives. How does the style of images impact their understanding? How are metaphors and complex meanings conveyed by images? How is meaning understood across sequential images? How do children produce and comprehend sequential images? Are visual narratives beneficial for education and literacy? Do visual narrative systems differ across cultures and historical time periods? This book provides a foundation of research for readers to engage in these fundamental questions and explore the most vital thinking about visual narrative. It collects important papers and introduces review chapters summarizing the literature on specific approaches to understanding visual narratives. The result is a comprehensive “reader” that can be used as a coursebook, a researcher resource and a broad overview of fascinating topics suitable for anyone interested in the growing field of the visual language of comics and visual narratives.
