Book excerpt: Thomas E. Sheridan has spent a lifetime in Arizona, "living off it and seeking refuge from it." He knows firsthand its canyons, forests, and deserts; he has seen its cities exploding with new growth; and, like many other people, he sometimes fears for its future. In this book, Sheridan sets forth new ideas about what a history should be. Arizona: A History explores the ways in which Native Americans, Hispanics, and Anglos have inhabited and exploited Arizona from the pursuit of the Naco mammoth 11,000 years ago to the financial adventurism of Charles Keating and others today. It also examines how perceptions of Arizona have changed, creating new constituencies of tourists, environmentalists, and outside business interests to challenge the dominance of ranchers, mining companies, and farmers who used to control the state. Sheridan emphasizes the crucial role of the federal government in Arizona's development throughout the book. As Sheridan writes about the past, his eyes are on the inevitable change and compromise of the present and future. He balances the gains and losses as global forces interact more and more with local cultural and environmental factors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Arizona Bibliography: A Private Collection of Arizoniana I have just received your Bibliography of Arizona books and observe that it constitutes an extensive field of litera ture. Probably you have the largest collection of such books in the world, at least the largest private collection. You ought, it seems to me, to have written a preface or introduction to the list setting forth your aim in publishing the pamphlet and giving your experiences and trials in mak ing the collection. I do not doubt but what it would have been interesting reading for the public and would have made the Bibliography more precious to many of its recipients. I thank you for my copy and prize it highly, not because I am so much interested in the subject it is devoted to, as to the fact that I have for a long time been cognizant of your hobby and have sympathized with you in your efforts; and, also, because I have enjoyed reading your articles on Arizona which have appeared in our Journal at various times. Fraternally, H. T. Webster. The above letter written by Dr. Webster, as well as letters of similar import that were received from other friends, decided me to give in a prefatory note to the second edition of my Arizona Bibliography, an account of the beginning and growth of my Arizona Library. My first visit to Arizona occurred in the spring of 1884 and was for the double purpose of taking a needed vacation and to inspect our cattle ranch, which my brother, Judge Munk, had established the previous year in Railroad Pass in Southeastern Arizona. I was delighted with the trip and was very favorably impressed with the country and climate. Indeed, I became so much interested in what I said that baa. Wanted to know what had been written and printed in books about that strange land. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sonoran Desert, a fragile ecosystem, is under ever-increasing pressure from a burgeoning human population. This ecological atlas of the region's plants, a greatly enlarged and full revised version of the original 1972 atlas, will be an invaluable resource for plant ecologists, botanists, geographers, and other scientists, and for all with a serious interest in living with and protecting a unique natural southwestern heritage. An encyclopedia as well as an atlas, this monumental work describes the taxonomy, geographic distribution, and ecology of 339 plants, most of them common and characteristic trees, shrubs, or succulants. Also included is valuable information on natural history and ethnobotanical, commercial, and horticultural uses of these plants. The entry for each species includes a range map, an elevational profile, and a narrative account. The authors also include an extensive bibliography, referring the reader to the latest research and numerous references of historical importance, with a glossary to aid the general reader. Sonoran Desert Plants is a monumental work, unlikely to be superseded in the next generation. As the region continues to attract more people, there will be an increasingly urgent need for basic knowledge of plant species as a guide for creative and sustainable habitation of the area. This book will stand as a landmark resource for many years to come.
