Book excerpt: Excerpt from Arithmetic, Oral and Written, Practically Applied by Means of Suggestive Questions I had three main objects in the preparation of this Treatise, namely, 1. SO to simplify the arrangement of the subject as to give a clear general view, to enable the student to grasp the science as a whole 2. To save his time by the introduction of shorter and more rapid processes and, 3. To develop his rea soning powers by constant practice. I. Simplicity of arrangement. The most inattentive Ob server can hardly have failed to notice the present confused classification of Arithmetic. Who among the brightest of our scholars can tell us the principles on which it is arranged? Can, at one view, take a. Clear and definite survey of the whole ground? In the present work, the science has been analyzed into a few simple principles, traced back, indeed, to one grand element, into which all others can be resolved; being, In fact, nothing more than mere abbreviations, by the omission of steps become superfluous by practice. II. Rapid computation. The present method of calculating in our schools has been aptly characterized as an awkward mode of spelling figures by taking them singly, in place Of read ing them in groups. The pupil is so shackled with the multi tude of words supposed to be indispensable, that his progress is necessarily slow and limping. If this work is used agreeably to the directions in p. Viii. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Arithmetic, Oral and Written, Practically Applied by Means of Suggestive Questions I had three main objects in the preparation of this Treatise, namely, 1. So to simplify the arrangement of the subject as to give a clear general view, to enable the student to grasp the science as a whole; 2. To save his time by the introduction of shorter and more rapid processes; and, 3. To develop his reasoning powers by constant practice. I. Simplicity of arrangement. II. Rapid computation. - The present method of calculating in our schools has been aptly characterized as an awkward mode of spelling figures by taking them singly, in place of reading them in groups. The pupil is so shackled with the multitude of words supposed to be indispensable, that his progress is necessarily slow and limping. If this work is used agreeably to the directions in p. viii. and elsewhere, these incumbrances will be almost entirely avoided from the outset, and a degree of rapidity quickly attained, which, at first sight, would hardly appear credible. This rapidity of operation, too, is much increased by a very great diminution in the number of figures employed, amounting, in many cases, to more than a half. III. Intellectual culture. - One of the principal objects in the study of the mathematics is the mental culture it affords; and undoubtedly arithmetic cannot be acquired at all without some improvement of the mind. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Practical Arithmetic: Oral and Written IN accordance with the opinions of leading students of pedagogy. And with the courses of study in the best schools of this country, the first two books of this series are arranged on the spiral plan, and the third book, for the seventh and eighth grades, on the topical plan. The Werner Arithmetic, Book III, of which this is a revision, was a combination of the spiral and the topical methods, with emphasis on the latter. Further experience and observation lead the author to a strictly topical arrangement of the subjects in this book. No effort whatever has been made to follow the lead of some recently published arithmetics and make the book an encyclopedia of geographical, historical, and statistical number facts. It is a pedagogical axiom that the concrete illustrations of number relations that are most helpful in giving the pupil a clear conception of the facts and processes of arithmetic are those with which the student is already somewhat familiar or those with which he feels the need of becoming familiar. The correlation of the work in arithmetic with the work in geography and history is often desirable and helpful; but this should be incidental should be brought to, the attention of the pupil in connection with the quantitative incidents of geography and history. The intellect of the pupil is thus addressed at every step; and every part of the instruction is made the means of effecting that mental development which constitutes the highest aim, as well as the most important result, of every branch of education. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Complete Arithmetic, Vol. 2: Oral and Written Arithmetic is pre-eminently a subject of practical value that is, it is one to be constantly applied to the practical affairs of life. But this is true only in a limited sense. Very few ever need to apply to any of the purposes of business more than a small part of the principles and rules of calculation taught in the text-books. Every branch of business has its own requirements in this respect, and these are all confined within very narrow limits. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bradbury's Eaton's Practical Arithmetic, Combining Oral and Written Exercises The number of rules has been reduced to a minimum. For example, but one rule is given for multiplication of fractions, one for division of fractions, and two for all cases of reduction of compound numbers, whether integral or fractional. It combines oral and written exercises; and special pains has been taken to give examples that are practical, and that conform to the usual experiences of daily life. In the Appen dix are given seven hundred additional examples for written work, to be drawn from at the discretion of the teacher, for use in connection with the regular work, and for a general review of the subject. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Complete Graded Arithmetic: Oral and Written; Upon the Inductive Method of Instruction for Schools and Academies The book now offered to the public, unites in one volume Oral and Written Arithmetic upon the inductive method of instruction. Its aim is two-fold: to develop the intellect of the pupil, and to prepare him for the actual business of life. In securing these objects, it takes the most direct road to a practical knowledge of Arithmetic. The pupil is led by a few simple appropriate examples to infer for himself the general principles upon which the operations and rules depend, instead of taking them upon the authority of the author without explanation. He is thus taught to put the steps of particular solutions into a concise statement, or general formula. This method of developing principles is an important feature. It has been a cardinal point to make the explanations simple, the steps in the reasoning short and logical, and the definitions and rules brief, clear, and comprehensive. The discussion of topics which belong exclusively to the higher departments of the science is avoided; while subjects deemed too difficult to be appreciated by beginners, but important for them when more advanced, are placed in the Appendix, to be used at the discretion of the teacher. Arithmetical puzzles and paradoxes, and problems relating to subjects having a demoralizing tendency, as gambling, etc., are excluded. All that is obsolete in the former Tables of Weights and Measures is eliminated, and the part retained is corrected in accordance with present law and usage. Examples for Practice, Problems for Review, and Test Questions are abundant in number and variety, and all are different from those in the Practical Arithmetic. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Complete Arithmetic: On the Inductive Method, With Parallel Mental and Written Exercises The best way to awaken interest, stimulate a spirit of self reliance, and open the mind to a thorough knowledge of the subject is to lead a pupil by easy and graded steps to discover principles and methods for himself. Therefore a practical union of induction and deduction is one of the strongest possible features of a good arithmetic. A special effort has been made to construct the present work on this plan. Not only are new topics introduced by carefully pre pared inductive exercises, but, under the heading of parallel problems, each exercise intended for written work is pre ceded by an inductive question. The teacher should en courage the pupils to look to these oral questions for such hints as they may need in solving the more difficult problems, and thus train them in induction and deduction, as well as in mental and written work. The notation of numbers, operations, and relations forms the language of mathematics. It is not only the vehicle of thought, but very largely the means by which thought is directed and energized. In this, as in other things, it is a mistake to pass hastily from the concrete to the abstract. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sheldons Complete Arithmetic: With Oral and Written Exercises The chapters on Properties of Numbers, Fractions, Decimals, and De nominate Numbers are given in the usual order. Here, as in the preceding chapters, the definitions, principles and rules are reached by the inductive method, and the explanations of processes are models of simplicity and clearness. Due attention has been given to the Metric System of Weights and Measures, but instead of treating it as a separate topic, the tables have been introduced among the other tables of Denominate Numbers in their natural order, thus affording an opportunity for a comparison of units of measure. In the chapters on Percentage and the Applications of Percentage, those processes have been adopted which the experience of business men has proved to be the most practical, and the problems introduced are simple statements of commercial transactions as they actually occur.
