Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aristotle's Politics: Books I, III, IV, (VII.) In offering this translation to the public, I wish to say a few words as to the object with which it was written. When I took private pupils at Oxford, I found that Passmen who read Aristotle's 'Politics' laboured under great disadvantages in comparison with those who read the 'Ethics.' The latter possessed an excellent translation in that of Mr. Williams, and a complete edition, with good notes for their purpose, in Mr. Moore's book. The Passman-student of the 'Politics' generally used Mr. Congreve's edition, in which the most useful notes were not of the kind he needed, and the translation in Mr. Bohn's series. To help pupils who aimed at taking a Pass degree, I tried to translate for them the work they had to do in a manner at once literal, and not unintelligible when read apart from the Greek context. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aristotle's Politics: Translated by Benjamin Jowett With Introduction, Analysis and Index by H. W. C. Davis Zation, he was still more alive to the dangers, moral and other, which beset the path of a military and aggressive state. His sympathies were with the past, not the future; with Sparta and Athens rather than with Macedon; with Plato rather than with Alexander. Settling down at Athens, he became the leader of a philosophic school, the director of a brilliant academy; but he incurred the odium to which a friend of Macedon was naturally exposed in the city of Demosthenes. In 323, after the death of his pupil and patron, he was driven into exile by a prosecution for impiety which, if he had faced it, would probably have brought upon his head the fate of Socrates. He died in the following year at Chalcis, a Macedonian stronghold. The semi-barbarians, of whose future he doubted, had been more generous to him than the Greeks, whose highest thought it had been his life-work to interpret and to vindicate. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Government Aristotle's 'theory of Politics is based on Ethics. He saw clearly the central truth that a State can be no better than the citizens of which it is composed, and aimed at a community of good men. He allowed absolute monarchy only upon condi tion that the monarch was wiser and better than all the rest of the State. He wrote in a time when slavery was part of the social system, and saw in the slaves workers who left their masters free to grow in knowledge and wisdom rather than in wealth. Great wealth be regarded as, like poverty, a great evil strength and happiness were seated in the mean, that enabled a man to maintain body and mind in vigour, and do his duty in his home and in his city. This treatise on Government, in fact, though based upon bygone conditions of citizenship, laid the foundation of all subsequent discussions on the constitution of a State. Book excerpt: Twenty-three centuries after its compilation, 'The Politics' still has much to contribute to this central question of political science. Aristotle's thorough and carefully argued analysis is based on a study of over 150 city constitutions, covering a huge range of political issues in order to establish which types of constitution are best - both ideally and in particular circumstances - and how they may be maintained. Aristotle's opinions form an essential background to the thinking of philosophers such as Thomas Aquinas, Machiavelli and Jean Bodin and both his premises and arguments raise questions that are as relevant to modern society as they were to the ancient world.

Book excerpt: Aristotle offers a conception of the private and its relationship to the public that suggests a remedy to the limitations of liberalism today, according to Judith A. Swanson. In this fresh and lucid interpretation of Aristotle's political philosophy, Swanson challenges the dominant view that he regards the private as a mere precondition to the public. She argues, rather, that for Aristotle private activity develops virtue and is thus essential both to individual freedom and happiness and to the well-being of the political order. Swanson presents an innovative reading of The Politics which revises our understanding of Aristotle's political economy and his views on women and the family, slavery, and the relation between friendship and civic solidarity. She examines the private activities Aristotle considers necessary to a complete human life—maintaining a household, transacting business, sustaining friendships, and philosophizing. Focusing on ways Aristotle's public invests in the private through law, rule, and education, she shows how the public can foster a morally and intellectually virtuous citizenry. In contrast to classical liberal theory, which presents privacy as a shield of rights protecting individuals from one another and from the state, for Aristotle a regime can attain self-sufficiency only by bringing about a dynamic equilibrium between the public and the private. The Public and the Private in Aristotle's Political Philosophy will be essential reading for scholars and students of political philosophy, political theory, classics, intellectual history, and the history of women.
