Book excerpt: Vampires kill their mates. They never claim them. My name is Ariadne and I've been summoned to appear before my vampire mate. Is this the day I die? All of my life I did exactly what was asked of me. It hasn't been easy, especially in the last few years. My life took a drastic turn the year I turned sixteen. That's when I first presented as an Omega. The first one in my family. A curse on my bloodline and I'm the unlucky one who gets to bear it. Tonight, I've been summoned by the vampire who will claim me. I knew this night was coming, but I hadn't expected the handsome and sinfully sexy escort sent to fetch me for my new owner. His scent overwhelms me and makes it difficult to concentrate on the task at hand, though one wrong move could cost me my life. Grey Ariadne felt our connection in the same instant I did. It was powerful and overwhelming. Her body reacted in ways that would drive any alpha to desperate need. Of course, that meant my boss Atticus was just as aware of her sweet scent as I was. In the years I've worked for the bloodsucker I've never once considered breaking my pack's treaty with his coven, until tonight. The omega is my mate and I will do whatever it takes to claim her. My best friend Dax can help us hide in plain sight, until I can get her inside the pack where she'll be protected at all costs. Atticus I had one rule for the omega. Do not look me in the eye. Her scent reached me before Grey even had her on the grounds-the scent of my mate. Claiming her wasn't in the plans for tonight. I only wanted a taste, but I pulled away and caught her looking right at me. That small act of insolence started something that's bigger than the treaty between my coven and Grey's pack. The mating bond began. Mate bonds make vampires weak. I haven't survived in my undead life for nearly a millennia by allowing myself to be weakened. That's why I intended to eliminate my mate when the time finally came for the fates to reveal her to me, but when I looked up and caught her staring into my eyes... I couldn't do it. Grey took off with her in the night. He probably thinks he's protecting her from a certain death for disobeying my command. Stupid mutt. My men will find them. She'll be returned to me, her true mate. After the mating bond is complete and my strength returns, I'll deal with Grey-and his pack. A vampire mated a human? It's unholy in every way. Guess it doesn't matter, since I'm going to hell anyway. Dax They're all idiots. Ariadne doesn't deserve to be claimed by any one person. She's a free spirit who deserves a love as free as she desires to be. I'd die to protect her and tonight I just might. Ariadne is an MMMF why choose romance with a human omega, alpha wolf shifters, witches, dark magic and a vampire alpha. There are dark themes contained in this book, so please only read this if you are comfortable with uncomfortable things. This book is part of the Immortal Bloodlines series but can be read as a stand alone and in any order with the other books in this series.

Book excerpt: A bookworm from New York studying abroad in Athens discovers that everything fictional is actually true, and her obsession with books is replaced by another, more dangerous one. Yes, the city of Athens has secrets. Her host family calls them "tramps." In Greek, they are called vrykolakas, or "vryks," which sometimes gets translated to "freaks." They are the vampires of Athens, created centuries ago by the Maenads. They live in caves beneath the acropolis without economic resources and according to rules imposed on them by the Olympians. First and foremost, they are forbidden from turning humans into vampires. The human will not turn unless all of the blood is drained, so a vampire is allowed to drink up to one pint per month from a willing mortal. Some mortals are willing because a vampire bite will infect the body for six hours, and during that time, the mortal has the powers of the vampire: flight, invisibility, strength, speed, x-ray vision, and mind control. Such great power can become irresistible, though dangerous and addicting to mortals... As seventeen-year-old Gertie, studying abroad from New York, uncovers the unfathomable secrets of this ancient city, she becomes involved with a handsome vampire. Is it love that attracts her, or the temporary powers from his bite? She's more confused when her heart is drawn to the vampire's enemy--a demigod sworn to protect the city--and she becomes an unwitting catalyst to war. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This “vigorous, witty look at the undead as cultural icons in 19th- and 20th-century England and America” examines the many meanings of the vampire myth (Kirkus Reviews). From Byron’s Lord Ruthven to Anne Rice’s Lestat to the black bisexual heroine of Jewelle Gomez’s The Gilda Stories, vampires have taken many forms, capturing and recapturing our imaginations for centuries. In Our Vampires, Ourselves, Nina Auerbach explores the rich history of this literary and cultural phenomenon to illuminate how every age embraces the vampire it needs—and gets the vampire it deserves. Working with a wide range of texts, as well as movies and television, Auerbach follows the evolution of the vampire from 19th century England to 20th century America. Using the mercurial figure as a lens for viewing the last two hundred years of Anglo-American cultural history, “this seductive work offers profound insights into many of the urgent concerns of our time” (Wendy Doniger, The Nation).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Symbolism is the most powerful and ancient means of communication available to humankind. For centuries people have expressed their preoccupations and concerns through symbolism in the form of myths, stories, religions, and dreams. The meaning of symbols has long been debated among philosophers, antiquarians, theologians, and, more recently, anthropologists and psychologists. In Ariadne's Clue, distinguished analyst and psychiatrist Anthony Stevens explores the nature of symbols and explains how and why we create the symbols we do. The book is divided into two parts: an interpretive section that concerns symbols in general and a "dictionary" that lists hundreds of symbols and explains their origins, their resemblances to other symbols, and the belief systems behind them. In the first section, Stevens takes the ideas of C. G. Jung a stage further, asserting not only that we possess an innate symbol-forming propensity that exists as a creative and integral part of our psychic make-up, but also that the human mind evolved this capacity as a result of selection pressures encountered by our species in the course of its evolutionary history. Stevens argues that symbol formation has an adaptive function: it promotes our grasp on reality and in dreams often corrects deficient modes of psychological functioning. In the second section, Stevens examines symbols under four headings: "The Physical Environment," "Culture and Psyche," "People, Animals, and Plants," and "The Body." Many of the symbols are illustrated in the book's rich variety of woodcuts. From the ancient symbol of the serpent to the archetypal masculine and feminine, from the earth to the stars, from the primordial landscape of the savannah to the mysterious depths of the sea, Stevens traces a host of common symbols back through time to reveal their psychodynamic functioning and looks at their deep-rooted effects on the lives of modern men, women, and children.
