Book Synopsis Thermodynamics Of Complex Systems: An Introduction To Ecophysics by : Luigi Sertorio
Download or read book Thermodynamics Of Complex Systems: An Introduction To Ecophysics written by Luigi Sertorio and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1990-12-30 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims at guiding the reader with continuity from the elements of classical equilibrium thermodynamics to the formal problems of global non equilibrium thermodynamics necessary to describe an “active system” such is a thermodynamic ecosystem. To this purpose, the brief review of equilibrium thermodynamics emphasizes the concepts of disequilibrium, Carnot cycles and less efficient cycles, and Gibbs availability as the distance from equilibrium. In this way the reader is taken by hand to accept the concept of Gibbs efficiency of the ecosystem Earth as a property given to us by the cosmological evolution. The final chapters are devoted to the optimal control theory of global non-equilibrium systems. An elementary theory of zero energy thermodynamic automata is presented. A thermodynamic automation with four temperatures and three controls is discussed in detail.

Book Synopsis Philosophies of Technology by : Claus Zittel
Download or read book Philosophies of Technology written by Claus Zittel and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008 with total page 617 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in the present volume attempt to historically reconstruct the various dependencies of philosophical and scientific knowledge of the material and technical culture of the early modern era and to draw systematic conclusions for the writing of early modern history of science. The divisive transformation of humanist scholarly culture, the Scholastic school philosophy, as well as magic in the form of a philosophy of practice is always associated with the work of Francis Bacon. All of these essays in this volume reflect the close interaction between technical models and knowledge production in natural philosophy, natural history and epistemology. It becomes clear that the technological developments of the early modern era cannot be adequately depicted in the form of a pure history of technology but rather only as part of a broader, cultural history of the sciences. Contributors include: Todd Andrew Borlik, Arianna Borrelli, Thomas Brandstetter, Daniel Damler, Luisa Dolza, Moritz Epple, Berthold Heinecke, Dana Jalobeanu, J rgen Klein, Staffan M ller-Wille, Romano Nanni, Jarmo Pulkkinen, Pablo Schneider, Andr s Vaccari, Benjamin Wardhaugh, Sophie Weeks, and Claus Zittel.

Book Synopsis Giordano Bruno and the Logic of Coincidence by : Antonio Calcagno
Download or read book Giordano Bruno and the Logic of Coincidence written by Antonio Calcagno and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1998 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Burned at the stake for heresy, Giordano Bruno (1548-1600) was one of the Renaissance's more controversial thinkers. Current scholarship tends to read Bruno as either a Neo-Platonist who ultimately collapses reality to an overarching unity, or as an eclectic thinker whose disparate and disjointed musings are essentially incoherent. By closely and critically examining Bruno's writings this book demonstrates that Bruno was very much in the spirit of Modernity in that he tried to explain philosophically the possibility of the coexistence of unity and multiplicity (difference) through the «then-scientific» logic of the coincidence of opposites. His metaphysics, cosmology and ethical thinking are to be understood through this underlying logic of coincidence, thereby rendering Bruno neither an absolute Neo-Platonist nor unintelligible.
Book Synopsis Corporeità e gioco by : Romano Mezzetti
Download or read book Corporeità e gioco written by Romano Mezzetti and published by Edizioni Nuova Cultura. This book was released on 2012 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book Synopsis Byzantine Perspectives on Neoplatonism by : Sergei Mariev
Download or read book Byzantine Perspectives on Neoplatonism written by Sergei Mariev and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2017-03-20 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Byzantine intellectuals not only had direct access to Neoplatonic sources in the original language but also, at times, showed a particular interest in them. During the Early Byzantine period Platonism significantly contributed to the development of Christian doctrines and, paradoxically, remained a rival world view that was perceived by many Christian thinkers as a serious threat to their own intellectual identity. This problematic relationship was to become even more complex during the following centuries. Byzantine authors made numerous attempts to harmonize Neoplatonic doctrines with Christianity as well as to criticize, refute and even condemn them. The papers assembled in this volume discuss a number of specific questions and concerns that drew the interest of Byzantine scholars in different periods towards Neoplatonic sources in an attempt to identify and explore the central issues in the reception of Neoplatonic texts during the Byzantine era. This is the first volume of the sub-series "Byzantinisches Archiv - Series Philosophica", which will be dedicated to the rapidly growing field of research in Byzantine philosophical texts.

Book Synopsis Fruits of the Cross by : Robert L. Kendrick
Download or read book Fruits of the Cross written by Robert L. Kendrick and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2018-11-27 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this first detailed study of seventeenth-century sepolcri—sacred operas written for court performance on Holy Thursday and Good Friday—Robert L. Kendrick delves into the political and artistic world of Habsburg Vienna, in which music and ritual combined on the stage to produce a thoroughly original art form based on devotion to Christ’s Tomb. Through the use of allegorical characters, the musical dramas ranged from the devotionally intense, to the theologically complex, to the ugly anti-Jewish, but played a unique role in making Passion piety relevant to wider cultural concerns. Fruits of the Cross suggests that understanding the sepolcri has implications for the theatricalization of devotion, the power of allegory, the role of queenship in court ideology, the interplay between visuality and music, and not least the intellectual centrality of music theater to court self-understanding.
