Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are fewer distinctions in any language than there are distinct things in the universe. If, therefore, languages are ways of representing the universe, a primary function of their elements must be to allow the much more varied kinds of elements out of which the universe is made to be categorized in specific ways. A prototype approach to linguistic categories is a particular way of answering the question of how this categorization operates. It involves two claims. First, that linguistic categorization exploits principles that are not specific to language but characterize most, if not all, processes of cognition. Secondly, that a basic principle by which cognitive and linguistic categories are organized is the prototype principle, which assigns elements to a category not because they exemplify properties that are absolutely required of each one of its members, but because they exhibit, in varying degrees, certain types of similarity with a particular category member which has been established as the best example (or: prototype) of its kind. The development of the prototype approach into a satisfactory body of theory obviously requires both that its empirical base be enriched, and that its conceptual foundations be clarified. These are the areas where this volume, in its 26 essays, makes original contributions. The first two parts contain discussions in which various kinds of linguistic phenomena are analysed in ways that make essential use of prototype notions. The last two parts contain discussions in which prototype notions themselves become the object, rather than the instrument, of analytical scrutiny.
Book Synopsis Experimentation and the Lyric in Contemporary French Poetry by : Jeff Barda
Download or read book Experimentation and the Lyric in Contemporary French Poetry written by Jeff Barda and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-10-17 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimentation and the Lyric in Contemporary French Poetry offers a new theoretical approach and historical perspective on the remarkable upsurge in creative poetic practices in France that have challenged traditional definitions of poetry and of the lyric. Focusing on the work of Pierre Alferi, Olivier Cadiot, Emmanuel Hocquard, Franck Leibovici, Anne Portugal and Denis Roche, this book provides an analysis of the most influential poets in French poetry of the last few decades. It contextualizes the theoretical models that inform their investigations, analyzing them alongside the history of the avant-garde and the heated theoretical debates that have taken place over whether to continue or bring an end to the lyric. Systematically addressing the various strategies employed by these poets and drawing on reception theory and cognitive studies, Jeff Barda argues that French radical poetics re-evaluates the lyric in cognitive terms beyond the personal. This book is essential reading for anyone interested in twenty-first-century forms of experimental writing and the connections between literature and the arts today.

Book Synopsis The Observations of Gilles le Bouvier by : Gideon Brough
Download or read book The Observations of Gilles le Bouvier written by Gideon Brough and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-09-19 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Translated from the medieval French, this book is a landmark English-language version of the work of Gilles le Bouvier. As the senior herald to King Charles VII, the monarch on the French throne as they advanced to victory in the Hundred Years' War between England, France and their allies, Gilles le Bouvier was close to the king during a decisive, formative period in France's history, as well as being a well-known figure from the period. The Berry Herald's Impressions of Europe thus delivers a rare glimpse of a singular medieval worldview, offered through the constrained voice of a skilled diplomat carefully and occasionally sharing his opinions to audiences composed of his social superiors. During his lifelong career as a messenger and a diplomat in Charles's service, Gilles le Bouvier, known as The Berry Herald, travelled far and wide on his master's behalf. This translated work is a compilation of his observations as he moved around Western Europe, the Mediterranean states and the Black Sea region. Throughout the text, Gilles le Bouvier: * assessed or commented on the lands encompassed by his extensive travels * discussed the peoples he claimed to have encountered, from the honourable Turks to the 'bad Catholics' of southern Italy * surveyed the military capabilities of France's neighbours, allies, enemies and neutral states Expertly introduced and contextualised by Gideon Brough and Sophie Patrick, this book provides a compelling and unique historical source for understanding life in late-medieval Europe through the eyes of someone who lived it.
