Book excerpt: The magazine of the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia, a collective container of knowledge and material stimulating, promoting and developing research in the diverse areas of Advanced Architecture through a multi-disciplinary approach. In the face of a hyper-technified world, we need more technology. In the face of an inhuman world, we need more otherness. In front of a perturbed world, we need more alienation. And above all, in front of an adulterated world, we need more artifice. In this scenario, biological agents, ecological agents, technological agents and cultural agents coproduce a reality that is no longer built from promethean epics, relativist ironies or primitivist nostalgia, but from accelerated hybrids; poly-plural constructs that hurtle towards a post-capitalist world. In the light of this narrative, Black Ecologies displays an architecture based not only on processes and performances, but also on specific, literal and hyperrealist protocols; they do not find shelter in abstraction, history or language, but on the conformation of operative "assemblages".

Book Synopsis The Aesthetics of Sustainability by : Ilaria Di Carlo
Download or read book The Aesthetics of Sustainability written by Ilaria Di Carlo and published by Antique Collector's Club. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: * Replete with full-colour photographs, this reference work is as aesthetically cultivated as the architecture it promotes * Addresses the complex issue of sustainability through a multitude of lenses, including social, environmental, economic, and aesthetic Sustainability may well determine the future of the human race. However, despite its importance, it often lacks one essential quality for success: seduction. An anthropic place must, as the name suggests, appeal to people. Sustainability has to find its own unique power of seduction if it is to compete with the established charms of the unsustainable city. A capitalistic city revolves around superficial allure. As such, beauty in the urban environment has come, somewhat paradoxically, to be associated with excess and exuberance, surplus production, conspicuous consumption, and waste. The research presented in this book encourages discourse on the importance of aesthetics; an exciting foray into the well-visited topic of sustainable production, viewed through a new lens. Ilaria Di Carlo is an architect, writer and researcher. After graduating with Honors at the Polytechnic of Milan in 2000, she obtained a Master's Degree in Landscape Urbanism at the Architectural Association in London. She has worked for different international offices and was Associate at Skidmore Owings and Merrill, London. 400 colour

Book Synopsis External Arguments in Transitivity Alternations by : Artemis Alexiadou
Download or read book External Arguments in Transitivity Alternations written by Artemis Alexiadou and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2015-01-08 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an exploration of the syntax of external arguments in transitivity alternations from a cross-linguistic perspective. It focuses particularly on the causative/anticausative alternation, which the authors take to be a Voice alternation, and the formation of adjectival participles. The authors use data principally from English, German, and Greek to demonstrate that the presence of anticausative morphology does not have any truth-conditional effects, but that marked anticausatives involve more structure than their unmarked counterparts. This morphology is therefore argued to be associated with a semantically inert Voice head that the authors call 'expletive Voice'. The authors also propose that passive formation is not identical across languages, and that the distinction between target vs. result state participles is crucial in understanding the contribution of Voice in adjectival passives. The book provides the tools required to investigate the morphosyntactic structure of verbs and participles, and to identify the properties of verbal alternations across languages. It will be of interest to theoretical linguists from graduate level upwards, particularly those specializing in morphosyntax and typology.
Book Synopsis Fuzzy Cognitive Maps by : Michael Glykas
Download or read book Fuzzy Cognitive Maps written by Michael Glykas and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-09-07 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important edited volume is the first such book ever published on fuzzy cognitive maps (FCMs). Professor Michael Glykas has done an exceptional job in bringing together and editing its seventeen chapters. The volume appears nearly a quarter century after my original article “Fuzzy Cognitive Maps” appeared in the International Journal of Man-Machine Studies in 1986. The volume accordingly reflects many years of research effort in the development of FCM theory and applications—and portends many more decades of FCM research and applications to come. FCMs are fuzzy feedback models of causality. They combine aspects of fuzzy logic, neural networks, semantic networks, expert systems, and nonlinear dynamical systems. That rich structure endows FCMs with their own complexity and lets them apply to a wide range of problems in engineering and in the soft and hard sciences. Their partial edge connections allow a user to directly represent causality as a matter of degree and to learn new edge strengths from training data. Their directed graph structure allows forward or what-if inferencing. FCM cycles or feedback paths allow for complex nonlinear dynamics. Control of FCM nonlinear dynamics can in many cases let the user encode and decode concept patterns as fixed-point attractors or limit cycles or perhaps as more exotic dynamical equilibria. These global equilibrium patterns are often “hidden” in the nonlinear dynamics. The user will not likely see these global patterns by simply inspecting the local causal edges or nodes of large FCMs.

Book Synopsis New Metropolitan Perspectives by : Francesco Calabrò
Download or read book New Metropolitan Perspectives written by Francesco Calabrò and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-05-19 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the role of cities and the urban–rural linkages in spurring innovation embedded in spatial planning, strategic and economic planning, and decision support systems. In particular, the contributions examine the complexity of the current transitional phase towards achieving smart, inclusive and sustainable growth, and investigate the post-2020 UE cohesion policy. The main topics include: Innovation dynamics and smart cities; Urban regeneration – community-led and PPP; Inland and urban area development; Mobility, accessibility, infrastructures; Heritage, landscape and Identity; and Risk management, Environment and Energy. The book includes a selection of articles accepted for presentation and discussion at the 3rd International Symposium New Metropolitan Perspectives (ISTH2020), held at the University of Reggio Calabria, Italy on 22–25 May 2018. The symposium, which addressed the challenge of local knowledge and innovation dynamics towards territory attractiveness, hosted the final event of the MAPS-LED project under Horizon2020 – MSCA RISE.
