Book Synopsis Constitutional Justice, East and West by : Wojciech Sadurski
Download or read book Constitutional Justice, East and West written by Wojciech Sadurski and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2002-12-31 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can the power of constitutional judges to overturn parliamentary choices on the basis of their own reading of the constitution, be reconciled with fundamental democratic principles which assign the supreme role in the political system to parliaments? This time-honoured question acquired a new significance when the post-commumst countries of Central and Eastern Europe, without exception, adopted constitutional models in which constitutional courts play a very significant role, at least in theory. Can we learn something about the relationship between democracy and constitutionalism in general, from the meteoric rise of constitutional tribunals in the post-communist countries? Can the discussions and controversies relating to constitutional review which have been going on for decades in more established democracies illuminate the sources of the strength of constitutional courts in Central and Eastern Europe? These questions lie at the center of this book, which focuses on the question of constitutional review in postcommunist states, from a theoretical and comparative perspective. The chapters contained in the book outline the conceptual framework for analyzing the sources, the role and the legitimacy of constitutional justice in a system of political democracy. From this perspective, it assesses the experience of constitutional justice in the West (where the model originated) and in Central and Eastern Europe, where the model has been implanted after the fail of Communism.

Book excerpt: Surrounded by Extinction, the Keep is enclosed within a fifty foot wall. Only desert and destruction exist beyond. Inside this lone fortress, the Council of Constraint controls everything: curfew, clothes, career, names... In return for surrendering freedom, citizens receive survival. Most don't mind the exchange. The Son of Sara isn't like most people. However, no one seems to share his growing sense of dread. His mother is too busy. His father is dead. His friends think he’s reckless. Only nightly visits beyond the wall offer any relief. Then one day, he receives a letter signed by the Nightingale, the Keep's mysterious dissident. After that, nothing is the same. Unless he learns to live by the rules, Sarason could be called before the Council. He should stop before he is caught, but first he wants to know the Nightingale's identity, and why he was chosen to help her cause.

Download or read book PINSTRIPE PATRONAGE written by Martin Tolchin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Political patronage - awarding discretionary favors in exchange for political support - is alive and well in 21st century America. This book examines the little understood patronage system, showing how it is used by 'pinstripe' elites to subvert the democratic process. 'Pinstripe patronage' thrives on the billions of dollars distributed by government for the privatisation of public services. Martin and Susan Tolchin introduce us to government grants specified for the use of an individual, corporation, or community and 'hybrid agencies', with high salaries for top executives and board members. In return for this corporate welfare pinstipe partons giving politicians the ever-increasing funds needed to conduct their political campaigns. As budget cuts begin to bite, the authors argue that it is time to clamp down on the corrupt practice of pinstripe patronage.
