This book was released on 2022-06-27 with total page 611 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, a microhistorical approach is employed to provide a transcription, translation, and case-study of the proceedings (written in Latin, Italian and Arabic) of the Roman Inquisition on Malta’s 1605 trial of the ‘Moorish’ slave Sellem Bin al-Sheikh Mansur, who was accused and found guilty of practising magic and teaching it to the local Christians. Through both a detailed commentary and individual case-studies, it assesses what these proceedings reflect about religion, society, and politics both on Malta and more widely across the Mediterranean in the early 17th century. In so doing, this inter- and multi-disciplinary project speaks to a wide range of subjects, including magic, Christian-Muslim relations, slavery, Maltese social history, Mediterranean history, and the Roman Inquisition. It will be of interest to both students and researchers who study any of these subjects, and will help demonstrate the richness and potential of the documents in the Maltese archives. Book Synopsis The Holy Portolano / Le Portulan sacré by : Michele Bacci

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis WHO WAS SAINT LAZARUS? by : Elizabeth Cassar
Download or read book WHO WAS SAINT LAZARUS? written by Elizabeth Cassar and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-01-25 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two personages named Lazarus can be identified in the New Testament - one being Lazarus of Bethany; the other Lazarus the Beggar of the parable. The available relevant texts in the New Testament appear to give very little background information about the historical Lazarus. However, much can be gleaned by analysing the available information in the light of historical, archaeological and biblical sources. There is even less known about the historical Lazarus of Bethany after Jesus'' resurrection. The link between leprosy and St. Lazarus further led to the development of cults with associated iconography. The present publication is the result of a Workshop organised by the Grand Priory of the Maltese Islands of the Military and Hospitaller Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem. The Workshop was organised with the aim of investigating the personage of the historical Lazarus and to outline the cults that developed around him during the Medieval Period.

Book Synopsis Civilizing Habits by : Sarah A. Curtis
Download or read book Civilizing Habits written by Sarah A. Curtis and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-09-03 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Civilizing Habits explores the life stories of three French women missionaries--Philippine Duchesne, Emilie de Vialar, and Anne-Marie Javouhey--who crossed boundaries, both real and imagined, to evangelize far from France's shores. In so doing, they helped France reestablish a global empire after the dislocation of the Revolution and the fall of Napoleon. They also pioneered a new missionary era in which the educational, charity, and health care services provided by women became valuable tools for spreading Catholic influence across the globe. Philippine Duchesne traveled to former French territory in Missouri in 1818 to proselytize among Native Americans. Thwarted by the American policy of removing tribes even further west, she turned her attention to girls' education on the frontier. Emilie de Vialar followed French troops to Algeria after its conquest and opened missions throughout the Mediterranean basin in the mid-nineteenth century. Prevented from direct evangelization, she developed strategies and subterfuges for working among Muslim populations. Anne-Marie Javouhey evangelized among Africans in the French slave colonies, including a utopian settlement in the wilds of French Guiana. She became a rare Catholic proponent of the abolition of slavery and a woman designated a "great man" by the French king. Paradoxically, through embracing religious institutions designed to shield their femininity, these women gained increased authority to travel outside France, challenge church power, and evangelize among non-Christians, all roles more commonly ascribed to male missionaries. Their stories teach us about the life paths open to religious women in the nineteenth century and how both church and state benefitted from their initiative to expand the boundaries of faith and nation.
