Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disruptive pedagogies for archival research In a cultural moment when institutional repositories carry valuable secrets to the present and past, this collection argues for the critical, intellectual, and social value of archival instruction. Graban and Hayden and 37 other contributors examine how undergraduate and graduate courses in rhetoric, history, community literacy, and professional writing can successfully engage students in archival research in its many forms, and successfully model mutually beneficial relationships between archivists, instructors, and community organizations. Combining new and established voices from related fields, each of the book’s three sections includes a range of form-disrupting pedagogies. Section I focuses on how approaching the archive primarily as text fosters habits of mind essential for creating and using archives, for critiquing or inventing knowledge-making practices, and for being good stewards of private and public collections. Section II argues for conducting archival projects as collaboration through experiential learning and for developing a preservationist consciousness through disciplined research. Section III details praxis for revealing, critiquing, and intervening in historic racial omissions and gaps in the archives in which we all work. Ultimately, contributors explore archives as sites of activism while also raising important questions that persist in rhetoric and composition scholarship, such as how to decolonize research methodologies, how to conduct teaching and research that promote social justice, and how to shift archival consciousness toward more engaged notions of democracy. This collection highlights innovative classroom and curricular course models for teaching with and through the archives in rhetoric and composition and beyond.

The book features thirteen case studies that demonstrate solutions to both traditional management concerns as well as new issues and opportunities presented by changes in technology and organizational environments. The featured case studies are: 1) “We’ll Never Let You Retire!”: Creating a Culture of Knowledge Transfer 2) Raising Cash and Building Connections: Using Kickstarter to Fund and Promote a Cultural Heritage Project 3) A Winning Combination: Internships and High-Impact Learning in Archives 4) A Thief in Our Midst: Special Collections, Archives and Insider Theft 5) Tackling the Backlog: Conducting a Collections Assessment on a Shoestring 6) A Platform for Innovation: Creating the Labs Environment at the National Archives of Australia 7) Setting Our Own Agenda: Managing the Merger of Archives and Special Collections 8) Taking Control: Managing Organizational Change in Archives 9) Implementing Pre-Custodial Processing: Engaging Organizations to Invest Resources in their Records 10) Building Effective Leaders: Redesigning the Archives Leadership Institute 11) From Evaluation to Implementation: Selecting Archival Management Software 12) More Bang for the Buck: Sharing Personnel and Resources Across Institutions 13) “Make a New Plan, Stan”: Useful and Painless Strategic Planning The collected case studies present pragmatic approaches to challenges and opportunities that are common to organizations of all sizes and types. Their common focus is on building stronger archival programs by making effective use of people, technology, and resources while working within organizational requirements and constraints. The volume will be useful to those working in archives and special collections as well as other cultural heritage organizations, and provides ideas ranging from the aspirational to the immediately implementable. It also provides students and educators in archives, library, and public history graduate programs a resource for understanding the issues facing managers in the field today and the kinds of strategies archivists are using to meet these new challenges.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents examples of innovations in digital humanities (DH) efforts across India while theorizing disparate challenges and its negotiations. It examines DH projects that have spanned private and public efforts, institutionally sanctioned lab-work, and crowd-sourced programmes of public significance and shows how collectively they demonstrate the potential paths of DH in India. The essays in the volume highlight the two fundamental challenges for DH – acts of curation of new scales and the creation of platforms that can assist in the collation and analysis of these digital archives – and changes in learning behaviour. They examine the transformation of the university, and the opening up of new relationships between knowledge and audience in concomitant spaces of scholarship such as libraries, archives, and museums. The volume brings to the fore citizen efforts to document, record, and preserve as well as create new avenues of study and forge networks of scholarship that look very different from those of traditional academia. It also foregrounds the challenges of location and addresses the questions of how DH should be taught in India and how to build digital infrastructures. A go-to guide for DH efforts in India, this book will be an essential text for courses on digital humanities, library and information sciences, and the future of experiential learning.
