Optical networks based on wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) technology offer the promise to satisfy the bandwidth requirements of the Internet infrastructure. With WDM technology, signals are carried simultaneously on mUltiple wavelengths on a single fiber. WDM provides a practical approach of resolving the mismatch between the fiber ca pacity and the peak electronic processing speed. Mesh-based WDM networks have recently attracted much research and development interest since the In ternet topology is meshed in nature, and more importantly, mesh-based WDM networks are flexible with respect to routing and survivability. This book exam ines the management and survivability issues of mesh-based WDM networks and proposes new WDM network protocols and algorithms that could make telecommunication networks more efficient. Wavelength-routing has been one of the most important technologies to em ploy WDM in backbone networks. In wavelength-routed WDM networks, optical channels, which are referred to as lightpaths, are set up between WDM terminals. Most chapters of this bock are focused on various issues related to wavelength-routed networks, namely, routing and wavelength-assignment, con trol and management, fault management, and wavelength-converter placement. This book also presents an all-optical packet-switched network architecture based on the concept of photonic slot routing. The audience for this book are network designers and planners, research and development engineers active in the field of telecommunications, and students of optical networking at the graduate or senior undergraduate levels.

Abstract: ABSTRACT Optical mesh networks constructed using Wavelength-Division Multiplexing (WDM) will form the backbone of the next generation Internet. Current WDM technology can comfortably support 10Gbps on each wavelength channel, and with over 100 channels per fiber. In such a high-speed network, an interruption, even lasting for seconds, can cause huge data and revenue loss. In this dissertation, we concentrate on designing a survivable WDM network. Specific protection schemes are designed and studied at three optical transport network layers: IP/MPLS layer, WDM optical layer, and fiber-link layer. At IP/MPLS layer, Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) protocol provides end- to-end QoS guaranteed transport service to IP traffic. This is achieved by setting up Label-Switched Paths (LSPs) for node pairs on demand. To survive from any single network failure, two disjoint LSPs are established for each connection request. If an LSP fails, the carried traffic is rerouted onto the other/backup LSP. As the bandwidth on backup LSPs can be shared among different calls, it is important to maximize backup resource sharing. To this end, three efficient dynamic restorable routing algorithms are designed based on the two-step routing concept. MPLS can be integrated with Optical Burst Switching (OBS) to form Labeled OBS paradigm. Due to the use of one-way resource reservation, data burst loss due to burst contention can be high. To minimize the burst loss probability, an original Burst Cloning with Load Balancing (BCLB) scheme is also devised. At WDM optical layer, we first introduce the bi-directional WDM transmission technology. Compared with unidirectional WDM systems, bi-directional WDM not only saves the cost of deploying extra fibers, but also allows extra flexibility in bi- directional backup wavelength sharing. To fully exploit this flexibility, two original lightpath protection schemes, BiPro and BiProLP, are proposed. Notably, BiProLP further economizes the hardware cost incurred by BiPro. We then focus on finding most reliable lightpaths with arbitrary risk distribution at the underlying physical layer. Two problems, Minimum Risk Single Path (MRSP) and Most Reliable Path iiPair (MRPP), are formulated and studied. Efficient algorithms are then designed for their solutions based on the label-setting (LS) concept. For survivability at fiber-link layer, connectivity with respect to risk occurrence is crucial in determining the network robustness. We present the first effort in addressing the three minimum risk cut problems: Minimum Risk Single-Pair Cut (MRSPC), Minimum Risk Multi-Pair Cut (MRMPC) and Minimum Risk Multi-Way Cut (MRMWC). We first prove the NP-hardness and non-approximability of the three problems. We then formulate them using Integer Linear Programming. A simple greedy algorithm for solving MRSPC problem is also designed. iii DOI: 10.5353/th_b3857484 Subjects: Wavelength division multiplexing Optical communication systems - Design and construction Optical communications

While optics and electronics should be used appropriately for transmission and switching hardware, note that "intelligence'' in any network comes from "software,'' for network control, management, signaling, traffic engineering, network planning, etc.The role of software in creating powerful network architectures for optical WDM networks is emphasized. Optical WDM Networks is a textbook for graduate level courses. Its focus is on the networking aspects of optical networking, but it also includes coverage of physical layers in optical networks. The author introduces WDM and its enabling technologies and discusses WDM local, access, metro, and long-haul network architectures. Each chapter is self-contained, has problems at the end of each chapter, and the material is organized for self study as well as classroom use. The material is the most recent and timely in capturing the state-of-the-art in the fast-moving field of optical WDM networking.

Book excerpt: This dissertation addresses several important survivable design issues in WDM mesh networks. Shared backup path protection has been shown to be efficient in terms of capacity utilization, due to the sharing of backup capacity. However, sharing of backup capacity also complicates the restoration process, and leads to slow recovery. The p-cycle scheme is the most efficient ring-type protection method in terms of capacity utilization. Recently, the concept of pre-cross-connected protection was proposed to increase the recovery speed of shared path protection. We overview these protection methods. The recovery time of these schemes are compared analytically. We formulate integer programming optimization problems for three protection methods in static traffic scenario, considering wavelength continuity constraint. We develop a p-cycle based scheme to deal with dynamic traffic in WDM networks. We use a two-step approach. In first step, we find a set of p-cycles to cover the network and reserve enough capacity in p-cycles. In second step, we route the requests as they randomly arrive one by one. We propose two routing algorithms. Compared to the shared path protection, the p-cycle based design has the advantage of fast recovery, less control signaling, less dynamic state information to be maintained. To evaluate the blocking performance of proposed method, we compare it with shared backup path protection by extensive simulations. We propose a path-based protection method for two-link failures in mesh optical networks. We identify the scenarios where the backup paths can share their wavelengths without violating 100% restoration guarantee (backup multiplexing). We use integer linear programming to optimize the total capacity requirement for both dedicated- and shared-path protection schemes. The recently proposed light trail architecture offers a promising candidate for carrying IP centric traffic over optical networks. The survivable design is a critical part of the integral process of network design and operation. We propose and compare two protection schemes. The survivable light trail design problem using connection based protection model is solved using a two-step approach.

Book excerpt: Finding an optimal solution to the problem of fast and efficient provisioning of reliable connections and failure recovery in future intelligent optical networks is an ongoing challenge. In this dissertation, we investigate and compare the performance of an adapted shared-path protection algorithm with a more conventional approach: both designed for survivable optical Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) mesh networks. The effect of different classes of service on performance is also investigated. Dedicated path protection is a proactive scheme which reserves spare resources to combat single link failures. Conventional Shared-path Protection (CSP) is desirable due to the efficient utilization of resources which results from the sharing of backup paths. Availability is an important performance assessment factor which measures the probability that a connection is in an operational state at some point in time. It is the instantaneous counterpart of reliability. Therefore, connections that do not meet their availability requirements are considered to be unreliable. Reliability Aware Shared-path Protection (RASP) adopts the advantages of CSP by provisioning reliable connections efficiently, but provides protection for unreliable connections only. With the use of a link disjoint parameter, RASP also permits the routing of partial link disjoint backup paths. A simulation study, which evaluates four performance parameters, is undertaken using a South African mesh network. The parameters that are investigated are: 1. Blocking Probability (BP), which considers the percentage of connection requests that are blocked, 2. Backup Success Ratio (BSR), which considers the number of connections that are successfully provisioned with a backup protection path, 3. Backup Primary Resource Ratio (BPR), which considers the ratio of resources utilized to cater for working traffic to the resources reserved for protection paths and lastly 4. Reliability Satisfaction Ratio (RSR), which evaluates the ratio of provisioned connections that meet their availability requirements to the total number of provisioned connections. Under dynamic traffic conditions with varying network load, simulation results show that RASP can provision reliable connections and satisfy Service Level Agreement (SLA) requirements. A competitive Blocking Probability (BP) and lower Backup Primary Resource Ratio (BPR) signify an improvement in resource utilization efficiency. A higher Backup Success Ratio (BSR) was also achieved under high Quality of Service (QoS) constraints. The significance of different availability requirements is evaluated by creating three categories, high availability, medium availability and low availability. These three categories represent three classes of service, with availability used as the QoS parameter. Within each class, the performance of RASP and CSP is observed and analyzed, using the parameters described above. Results show that both the BP and BPR increase with an increase in the availability requirements. The RSR decreases as the reliability requirements increase and a variation in BSR is also indicated.

Book excerpt: Optical networks based on wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) tech nology offer the promise to satisfy the bandwidth requirements of the Inter net infrastructure, and provide a scalable solution to support the bandwidth needs of future applications in the local and wide areas. In a waveleng- routed network, an optical channel, referred to as a lightpath, is set up between two network nodes for communication. Using WDM technology, an optical fiber link can support multiple non-overlapping wavelength channels, each of which can be operated at the data rate of 10 Gbps or 40 Gbps today. On the other hand, only a fraction of customers are expected to have a need for such a high bandwidth. Due to the large cost of the optical backbone infrastruc ture and enormous WDM channel capacity, connection requests with diverse low-speed bandwidth requirements need to be efficiently groomed onto hi- capacity wavelength channels. This book investigates the optimized design, provisioning, and performance analysis of traffic-groomable WDM networks, and proposes and evaluates new WDM network architectures. Organization of the Book Significant amount of research effort has been devoted to traffic grooming in SONET/WDM ring networks since the current telecom networks are mainly deployed in the form of ring topologies or interconnected rings. As the long-haul backbone networks are evolving to irregular mesh topologies, traffic grooming in optical WDM mesh networks becomes an extremely important and practical research topic for both industry and academia.

Book excerpt: Transport networks evolved from DCS (Digital Cross-connect Systems)-based mesh architectures, to SONET/SDH (Synchronous Optical Networking/Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) ring architectures in the 1990’s. In the past few years, technological advancements in optical transport switches have allowed service providers to support the same fast recovery in mesh networks previously available in ring networks while achieving better capacity efficiency and resulting in lower capital cost. Optical transport networks today not only provide trunking capacity to higher-layer networks, such as inter-router connectivity in an IP-centric infrastructure, but also support efficient routing and fast failure recovery of high-bandwidth services. This is possible due to the emergence of optical network elements that have the intelligence required to efficiently control the network. Optical mesh networks will enable a variety of dynamic services such as bandwidth-on-demand, Just-In-Time bandwidth, bandwidth scheduling, bandwidth brokering, and optical virtual private networks that open up new opportunities for service providers and their customers alike. Path Routing in Mesh Optical Networks combines both theoretical as well as practical aspects of routing and dimensioning for mesh optical networks. All authors have worked as technical leaders for the equipment vendor Tellium who implemented such capabilities in its product, and whose product was deployed in service provider networks. Path Routing in Mesh Optical Networks Presents an in-depth treatment of a specific class of optical networks, i.e. path-oriented mesh optical networks. Focuses on routing and recovery, dimensioning, performance analysis and availability in mesh optical networks. Explains and analyses routing specifically associated with Dedicated Backup Path Protection (DBPP) and Shared Backup Path Protection (SBPP) recovery architectures. As most of the core backbone networks evolve to mesh topologies utilizing intelligent network elements for provisioning and recovery of services, Path Routing in Mesh Optical Networks will be an invaluable tool for both researchers and engineers in the industry who are responsible for designing, developing, deploying and maintaining mesh optical networks. It will also be a useful reference book for graduate students and university professors who are interested in optical networks or telecommunications networking. With a foreword by Professor Wayne D. Grover, author of the book Mesh-Based Survivable Networks.
