Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Reconstructs the frames of reference that informed the practice of architecture in the Netherlands during the last century. The book provides a detailed documentation of twenty key architectural works, based on the original plans. Each of these works embodies a specific response to an architectural problem and represents a crystallization point of one of the various approaches that can be distinguished within the gamut of design strategies, namely a traditionalist, an expressionist, a functionalist, a rationalist and a post-modernist approach. These five approaches to architecture are reconstructed by analysing the interconnection between a building's form, construction and function. Their architectural and social significance is examined in five separate essays that precede the documentation. Difficult though it may be to classify individual buildings according to shared functional, constructional and formal characteristics, this does not mean that it is impossible to discern certain lines of development running through Dutch architectural production. Those lines are clearly set out in a removable 'Calendar'. One hundred representative buildings, one for each year, are placed chronologically against the backdrop of technological and social developments. The 'Calendar' traces a path for today's designers, through the maze of stories about architecture, to the buildings themselves"--Back cover.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This richly illustrated book provides an introduction to twentieth century Dutch architecture. Ten concise chapters, each covering a single decade, discuss a selection of characteristic buildings, referring to the major events and developments of each period. Architectural history is not defined here as a cyclical succession of styles or generations, but as a heterogenous collection of buildings and designs which are often based on equally differing approaches. Apart from the internationally renowned masterpieces by architects like Berlage, Oud, Duiker, Van Eyck and Koolhaas this book includes numerous lesser known buildings which underline the versatility and quality of Dutch architecture.

Book excerpt: Passion and Control explores Dutch architectural culture of the eighteenth century, revealing the central importance of architecture to society in this period and redefining long-established paradigms of early modern architectural history. Architecture was a passion for many of the men and women in this book; wealthy patrons, burgomasters, princes and scientists were all in turn infected with architectural mania. It was a passion shared with artists, architects and builders, and a vast cast of Dutch society who contributed to a complex web of architectural discourse and who influenced building practice. The author presents a rich tapestry of sources to reconstruct the cultural context and meaning of these buildings as they were perceived by contemporaries, including representations in texts, drawings and prints, and builds on recent research by cultural historians on consumerism, material culture and luxury, print culture and the public sphere, and the history of ideas and mentalities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the Fall of Antwerp in 1585, Amsterdam took over its position as the main trade hub in northwestern Europe. The city grew rapidly to become the central harbour town - and one of the largest European cities. The boom in harbours and industry went hand in hand with an explosive population growth. This resulted in two huge city extensions in 1613 and 1663, multiplying the territory of Amsterdam by five. Around the old town, the now famous ring of canals was constructed. Beyond this residential zone mixed-use and industrial districts were laid out, with a series of harbour islands along the borders of the IJ. Early modern Amsterdam was an ultra-modern city, laid out conforming to the triple demand of functionality, beauty and profit; a city that takes a unique place in European urban history because of its location, design, and impressive scale. This book deals with the question how Amsterdam's administration managed to realize these immense projects from the viewpoints of urban design, infrastructure, logistics, and finance. The first part of this book is dedicated to the extension projects. A thorough analysis of all remaining administrative archives and a great many cartographic documents has enabled the author to reconstruct the decision process about the scale, design, and realization of the extensions. The second part contains chapters concerning land use, public space and water management. Metropolis in the Making tells the story of one of the cradles of early modern capitalism and at the same time one of the most meticulously planned cities in the world. Its broad approach of planning makes this a standard work on early modern urbanism.
