Book excerpt: Little did Kathleen, Chief Architect at ArchiSurance, know, as she walked into a meeting with the CIO, just how much her job was going to change. Her intention had been to get approval for some new ideas she’d had to strengthen their Enterprise Architecture, after having slowly lost a grip on it during the merger. During the meeting, however, it becomes apparent that the transformation of the organization to become more digital has caused chaos, and not only for her team. It is clear, despite all good intentions, that the transformation is failing. By the end of the meeting, she has agreed to help turn the situation around. After leading the initial reset of the Digital Transformation, Kathleen is suddenly the owner of the implementation. What follows is a journey of the typical problems faced by companies as they make decisions to deploy digital technologies. Kathleen proceeds to solve one problem after the other using guidance from the open digital standards of The Open Group to lay the foundation for deploying quality digital technology solutions at a faster pace.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Autonomous manufacturing and cyber-physical systems are key enabling technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (IR4) which are currently being incorporated into the building design and construction industries. These emerging IR4 technologies have the potential to effectively improve construction affordability and productivity, address current and future building demand, and reduce the environmental impact of the built environment. However, design approaches that make use of IR4 technologies are still relatively unexplored. While automation, such as mass production, promotes standardised design solutions, design thinking that embraces varying degrees of autonomy can lead to unique and considered approaches to design on an industrial scale. Behavioural Production: Semi-Autonomous Approaches to Architectural Design, Robotic Fabrication and Collective Robotic Construction explores design operating through the orchestration of spatiotemporal events. A multi-agent behaviour-based approach to computation is employed in architectural design and extended to individual and swarm-based robotic methods for additive manufacturing. Behavioural Production seeks to expand our capacity to engage with the world at large through varying degrees of autonomy. In an industrialised world where traditional craftsmanship has been marginalised and cannot scale to meet societal needs, this book speculates a means to bring scalable forms of creativity into the act of making. This is explored through the use of materials, generative algorithms, computer vision, machine learning, and robot systems as active agents in design conception and realisation. The book presents a collection of ideas, projects, and methods developed in the author’s design practices and research labs in the fields of architecture and computer science. This body of work demonstrates that engaging with semi-autonomous processes does not diminish authorship, but rather expands it into new forms of design agency that seamlessly integrate with emerging manufacturing and construction technologies whilst authoring distinctive design character.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ArchiMate® Specification, a standard of The Open Group, defines an open and independent modeling language for Enterprise Architecture that is supported by different tool vendors and consulting firms. The ArchiMate language enables Enterprise Architects to describe, analyze, and visualize the relationships among business domains in an unambiguous way. This book is the official specification of the ArchiMate 3.1 modeling language from The Open Group. This edition of the standard includes a number of corrections, clarifications, and improvements to the previous edition, as well as several additions. The main changes between Version 3.0.1 and Version 3.1 of the ArchiMate Specification are listed below. In addition to these changes, various other minor improvements in definitions and other wording have been made: • Introduced a new strategy element: value stream • Added an optional directed notation for the association relationship • Improved the organization of the metamodel and associated figures • Further improved and formalized the derivation of relationships The intended audience is threefold: 1. Enterprise Architecture practitioners, such as architects (e.g., business, application, information, process, infrastructure, and, obviously, enterprise architects), senior and operational management, project leaders, and anyone committed to work within the reference framework defined by the Enterprise Architecture. 2. Those who intend to implement the ArchiMate language in a software tool; they will find a complete and detailed description of the language in this book. 3. • The academic community, on which we rely for amending and improving the language, based on state-of-the-art research results in the Enterprise Architecture field.

Book excerpt: About This Book This book, "Managing Digital: Concepts and Practices", is intended to guide a practitioner through the journey of building a digital-first viewpoint and the skills needed to thrive in the digital-first world. As such, this book is a bit of an experiment for The Open Group; it isn’t structured as a traditional standard or guide. Instead, it is structured to show the key issues and skills needed at each stage of the digital journey, starting with the basics of a small digital project, eventually building to the concerns of a large enterprise. So, feel free to digest this book in stages — the section Introduction for the student is a good guide. The book is intended for both academic and industry training purposes. This book seeks to provide guidance for both new entrants into the digital workforce and experienced practitioners seeking to update their understanding on how all the various themes and components of IT management fit together in the new world. About The Open Group Press The Open Group Press is an imprint of The Open Group for advancing knowledge of information technology by publishing works from individual authors within The Open Group membership that are relevant to advancing The Open Group mission of Boundaryless Information Flow™. The key focus of The Open Group Press is to publish high-quality monographs, as well as introductory technology books intended for the general public, and act as a complement to The Open Group Standards, Guides, and White Papers. The views and opinions expressed in this book are those of the author, and do not necessarily reflect the consensus position of The Open Group members or staff.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theoretical history of anthropomorphism and proportion in modern architecture, this volume brings into focus the discourse around proportion with current problems of post-humanism in architecture alongside the new possibilities made available through digital technologies. The book examines how the body and its ordering has served as a central site of architectural discourse in recent decades, especially in attempts to reformulate architecture’s relationship to humanism, modernism and technology. Challenging some concepts and categories of architectural history and situates current debates within a broader cultural and technological context, Hight makes complex ideas easily accessible. Extensively illustrated and written without academic jargon for an informed but non-specialized architectural audience, this book elucidates the often obscure debates of avant-garde architectural discourse and design, while demonstrating how these debates have affected everyday places and concepts of architecture. As a result, it will appeal to professional architects, academics and students, combining as it does an insightful introduction to the fundamental issues of architectural history and theory over the past fifty years with entirely new formulations of what that history is and means.
