Book excerpt: Excerpt from Architectural Rendering in Wash Opinion has proclaimed that a preface should introduce the author to his audience. I should add - and prepare that audi ence for the work itself. Architectural Rendering in Wash presents its author in the diverse capacities of architect, drafts man, painter, and writer. Incidentally, it suggests other qual ifications of this many-sided personality. It presents its subject from the view-points of architect and draftsman, and harmonizes them. It solves a host of difficult problems and answers many trying questions. It is the architectural draftsman who will be the greatest beneficiary, who will find his wogk has been made easier and his output improved by the acquisition of this new and engaging text book and authority. The architect will bene fit in that his work will be better presented, and possibly he may, himself, be better able to appreciate what architectural pre sentation means. Posterity will come in for a great acquisi tion in that through this work there will be recorded what other wise might one day join the lost arts, for architectural render ing is to-day at its zenith, indisputably an art in itself, and a great one. I foresee for this book a Widespread and lasting in fluence for the betterment of artistic appreciation, architectural draftsmanship, and last, but not least, architecture itself; and I commend it to all whose interests embrace these subjects, and to that great group of discerning men and women, the public ou whom by the very nature of things - the future of all art must. Book excerpt: The rendering is the most potent means of communicating an architectural design. It provides a complete image of a building in its planned setting. Unlike a physical or computer model, an elevation or plan, it speaks in a direct and accessible visual language that will enable any viewer to immediately picture the architect’s vision. The potency of the rendering is clearly understood by architects and clients alike. Major architectural practices now commission specialist studios to produce finished renderings of their buildings in order to effectively sell their designs to their clients, while clients also invest in renderings to convince the wider public of their vision for large-scale architectural projects. Whereas traditionally the rendering was an architectural drawing enlivened by watercolour washes, contemporary renderings are produced in a wide range of media and formats with the explicit purpose of visualising and exciting. A stunning visual survey of architectural rendering today that: Provides in-depth profiles of 14 of the top international rendering studios. Features images of landmark buildings, such as Foster’s British Museum, IM Pei’s Pyramid for the Louvre and OMA/Rem Koolhaas’ Central Library for Seattle. Includes architectural designs by high-profile practices: Asymptote, Jean Nouvel, UN Studio and Zaha Hadid Architects. Supplies key insights into the working methods of specialist rendering studios and their application of manual and digital technologies. Features informative essays by Fabrizio Avella, Professor of Drawing and Measuring and Digital Drafting at the University of Palermo, and Augusto Romano Burelli, Dean of the Department of Architecture at the University of Udine. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Architectural Rendering in Sepia The architect must be master of delineation, chiaroscuro and color, if he would make a perfect representation of the scene before him, or picture the fancy of his imagination. It is the purpose of these notes to point out to the student of architecture some facts of chiaroscuro, and to tell him how these facts may be rendered in washes of water color (sepia), that he may make the representation of a building. The two methods of rendering perspectives - by ink lines drawn with the pen and by washes of water color - cannot be compared. The means employed are totally unlike, and the results obtained almost as unlike. The lack of truthfulness and the meagre power of expression in the pen-rendered perspectives led to the formation in the School of Art and Design of the University of Illinois of a class in Sepia rendering, made up of students of architecture. These notes contain virtually the same matter as is there given in class lectures, and the exercises here reproduced show the manner in which the work is taken up. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Architectural rendering is the visualization of proposed architectural projects as they will appear when built, often depicted in the surrounding context of the site location. The aesthetic character and environmental impact of new building projects are of increasing importance not only to the commissioning agents responsible for design and planning, but also to the public at large who will have to live with the results. The skill of the architectural illustrator is of crucial importance in conveying the physical reality of new building design proposals. The significance of the artist's role as communicator is clearly illustrated in the contents of this book." "Architectural Rendering provides a detailed survey of international practice in this specialized and increasingly well-appreciated area of illustration. The text explains the context of architectural rendering, the development of the illustration's content and composition in relation to the given brief, the problems of perspective and other aspects of visualization that the illustrator may encounter, and the full range of media and techniques. Step-by-step demonstrations of a selection of different media and subjects form the central core of the book - these are real projects that offer a unique practical guide to the development of an architectural illustration from initial concept to finished rendering. They are followed by a comprehensive portfolio of work contributed by leading practitioners worldwide that demonstrates the extraordinary range and quality of current practice, from monochrome drawing to full-colour rendering to computer-generated images." "The book contains over 300 colour photographs and authoritative text and commentary by one of the UK's foremost architectural illustrators, Philip Crowe, President of the Society of Architectural and Industrial Illustrators, with contributions from the USA coordinated by Frank Costantino, President of the American Society of Architectural Perspectivists. Representing an international view of the highest standards in this important area of illustration work, Architectural Rendering is invaluable reference for the professional and a comprehensive guide for illustrators entering the field."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
