NASA currently provides them through three independent and uncoordinated network that consist of both Earth-based and space-based assets, all managed under the Space Navigation and Communication Program. Nevertheless, the ever increasing mission requirements and funding limitations motivates the need of revising the current network architectures in order to identify areas of potential performance and cost efficiency improvements. The main objective of this thesis is to present a tool that helps decision-makers during the process of architecting a space communication network by (1) systematically enumerating and exploring the space of alternative network architectures, (2) identifying those with better performance and lower cost, and (3) providing traceability between the outputs of the tool and the architecting decisions. The tool is tailored to the high level design of near Earth space communication networks that support robotic and human activities in the Earth vicinity through a set of relay communication satellites and their supporting ground stations. The decisions available to the network architect (both technical and contractual) are presented and along with their couplings. The tool is validated by comparing it to NASA's Space Network. The current operations of the system are analyzed and used as the baseline case for the validation process. Results demonstrate that the both performance model and spacecraft design algorithm are accurate to less than 10%, while the cost module produces estimates with a 15% error. Finally, the utility of the tool is demonstrated through three case studies on the evolution of the Space Network. In particular, the impact of new radio-frequency and optical technology to increase the system capacity is analyzed based on the predicted demand for the 2020-2030 decade. Similarly, the savings of flying relay transponders in commercial satellites as hosted payloads are quantified and benchmarked with respect to NASA's current approach of procuring and operating the entire network. Lastly, the tool is used to compare the current Space Network bent-pipe architecture with a constellation of satellites that takes advantage of inter-satellite links to provide full coverage of low Earth orbits with only one ground station.

Nowadays, NASA provides services to its customers by using a triple network composed of the Near Earth Network (NEN), the Deep Space Network (DSN) and the Space Network (SN). The increasing mission requirements are forcing NASA to upgrade its assets. Moreover, in order to reduce the cost of the system an integrated network that comprises the NEN, DSN and SN has been proposed. With the objective of assisting NASA's UComm Study team during the process of architecting NASA's next-generation integrated-network for space communications, MIT's System Architecture Lab has developed a computational tool called the Integrated Tradespace Analysis of Communications Architectures (ITACA). The objective of this thesis is to present the work conducted during this past year to expand the capabilities of ITACA. This dissertation focuses on 1) the implementation of crossover algorithms for the architectural decisions and 2) the improvements performed on the scheduler algorithm that assesses the performance of the network. These improvements are intended to include new features and improve ITACA's computational performance. Finally, the utility of the tool is demonstrated through a case study on the evolution of the Space Network. In particular, four trade-offs involving the constellation pattern selection, the frequency band selection, the disaggregation of payloads in multiple spacecraft and use of inter-satellite links are studied.

Since then, multiple space programs have been developed, pushing the limits of technology and science but foremost unveiling the mysteries of the universe. In all these cases, the need for flexible and reliable communication systems has been primordial, allowing the return of collected science data and, when necessary, ensuring the well-being and safety of astronauts. To that end, multiple space communication networks have been globally deployed, be it through geographically distributed ground assets or through space relay satellites. Until now most of these systems have relied upon mature technology standards that have been adapted to the specific needs of particular missions and customers. Nevertheless, current trends in the space programs suggest that a shift of paradigm is needed: an Internet-like space network would increase the capacity and reliability of an interplanetary network while dramatically reducing its overall costs. In this context, the System Architecting Paradigm can be a good starting point. Through its formal decomposition of the system, it can help determine the architecturally distinguishing decisions and identify potential areas of commonality and cost reduction. This thesis presents a general framework to evaluate space communication relay systems for the near Earth domain. It indicates the sources of complexity in the modeling process, and discusses the validity and appropriateness of past approaches to the problem. In particular, it proposes a discussion of current models vis-à-vis the System Architecting Paradigm and how they fit into tradespace exploration studies. Next, the thesis introduces a computational performance model for the analysis and fast simulation of space relay satellite systems. The tool takes advantage of a specifically built-in rule-based expert system for storing the constitutive elements of the architecture and perform logical interactions between them. Analogously, it uses numerical models to assess the network topology over a given timeframe, perform physical layer computations and calculate plausible schedules for the overall system. In particular, it presents a newly developed heuristic scheduler that guarantees prioritization of specific missions and services while ensuring manageable computational times.

The guidance and control of spacecraft depend on reliable communication. Scientific data returned to earth are irreplaceable, or replaceable only at the cost of another mission. In deep space, communications propagation is good, relative to terrestrial communications, and there is an opportunity to press toward the mathematical limit of microwave communication. Yet the limits must be approached warily, with reliability as well as channel capacity in mind. Further, the effects of small changes in the earth's atmosphere and the interplanetary plasma have small but important effects on propagation time and hence on the measurement of distance. Advances are almost incredible. Communication capability measured in 18 bits per second at a given range rose by a factor of 10 in the 19 years from Explorer I of 1958 to Voyager of 1977. This improvement was attained through ingenious design based on the sort of penetrating analysis set forth in this book by engineers who took part in a highly detailed and amazingly successful pro gram. Careful observation and analysis have told us much about limitations on the accurate measurement of distance. It is not easy to get busy people to tell others clearly and in detail how they have solved important problems. Joseph H. Yuen and the other contribu tors to this book are to be commended for the time and care they have devoted to explicating one vital aspect of a great adventure of mankind.
