Book excerpt: In featuring the Flemish practice of Jan De Vylder, Inge Vinck, and Jo Taillieu, this edition of 'Archives' provides an opportunity to highlight the importance of context and drawing. Context is a concept which appears constantly in their conversations and writings, one that the architects explain is not as limiting a term as many might think. The drawings herein offer precise analyses of the projects the office has undertaken, represented in different forms, through various mediums, layered drawings and paperwork. It is an example of how their work is continually developing, how its optimistic and collaborative nature combines three ways of thinking that have resulted in a well-oiled machine.

Book excerpt: The official publication on the Belgian contribution to the Biennale Architettura 2016 in Venice. It is a further elaboration of the work exhibited in the pavilion and a contribution to the architectural debate in Flanders and beyond. Comprised out of essays, interviews and images, this book offers an answer to the question what craftsmanship can mean today. The Flanders Architecture Institute commissioned the architects to develop an exhibition in the Belgian pavilion on the theme of 'craftsmanship'. The team, consisting of architecten de vylder vinck taillieu, doorzon interior architects, and architectural photographer and artist Filip Dujardin, explores the question of what craftsmanship can mean in conditions of scarcity. In order to demonstrate this, the pavilion exhibits fragments of thirteen representative projects of thirteen Flemish architects. Exhibition: Biennale Venice, Belgian Pavilion (28.05.-27.11.2016).

Book excerpt: How architecture and urbanism can help to care for and repair a broken planet: essays and illustrated case studies. Today, architecture and urbanism are capital-centric, speculation-driven, and investment-dominated. Many cannot afford housing. Austerity measures have taken a disastrous toll on public infrastructures. The climate crisis has rendered the planet vulnerable, even uninhabitable. This book offers an alternative vision in architecture and urbanism that focuses on caring for a broken planet. Rooted in a radical care perspective that always starts from the given, in the midst of things, this edited collection of essays and illustrated case studies documents ideas and practices from an extraordinarily diverse group of contributors. Focusing on the three crisis areas of economy, ecology, and labor, the book describes projects including village reconstruction in China; irrigation in Spain; community land trust in Puerto Rico; revitalization of modernist public housing in France; new alliances in informal settlements in Nairobi; and the redevelopment of traditional building methods in flood areas in Pakistan. Essays consider such topics as ethical architecture, land policy, creative ecologies, diverse economies, caring communities, and the exploitation of labor. Taken together, these case studies and essays provide evidence that architecture and urbanism have the capacity to make the planet livable, again. Essays by Mauro Baracco, Sara Brolund de Carvalho, Jane Da Mosto, Angelika Fitz, Hélène Frichot, Katherine Gibson, Mauro Gil-Fournier Esquerra, Valeria Graziano, Gabu Heindl, Elke Krasny, Lisa Law, Ligia Nobre, Meike Schalk, Linda Tegg, Ana Carolina Tonetti, Kim Trogal, Joan C. Book excerpt: Make New History, the companion publication to the 2017 Chicago Architecture Biennial, invites speculation on the status and importance of historical material to the field of architecture today. The book brings together an eminent collection of historians, curators and practitioners and features over a hundred artists and architects from the exhibition. The 2017 Chicago Architecture Biennial focuses on the efforts of contemporary architects to align their work with versions of history. The act of looking to the past to inform the present has always been central to architecture. The biennial and hence the book present the chance to consider anew the role history plays in the field today and to try to rethink this collective project of architecture. Being the largest architecture and design exhibition in North America, the 2017 Chicago Architecture Biennial presents the altering global impact of innovation and creativity regarding design and architecture. Visitors are invited to explore the impact and influence of architecture today and how it can and will make new history in different places all around the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fala is a young architecture practice founded in 2013 in Porto, and led by Filipe Magalhães, Ana Luisa Soares and Ahmed Belkhodja. Hedonistic yet restrained, the studio takes lightness and joy very seriously. Their projects can be characterized by a strong tendency towards autonomy, or better: towards an emerging independence of architectural language. Many of the refurbishment projects in Porto were initiated by private investors, trying to make a fortune by real estate speculation. After the economic crisis of 2008 the downtowns of Porto and Lisbon were confronted with a rampant boom in tourism. Speculation was propelled by special governmental measures such as the relief of a far-reaching protection against dismissal or the easy availability of golden visas. This may be the reason why some of Fala's projects come across like topical declinations of the same program: separation of auxiliary functions from the main space, zoning of the plan, opening and staging of the view onto a small courtyard.

Book excerpt: This beautifully illustrated book accompanies an exhibit at gta exhibitions of ETH Zurich that focuses on artworks featuring carefully designed stages--a deliberate blurring of the border between art, architecture, and performance. Creating static, yet theatrical, tableaux in which artists can highlight the interplay between the disciplines of art and architecture, the stages at the same time represent a wide range of creative approaches to art and art making, and they also offer reflections on sources of artistic inspiration, including books and films. A lasting record of a carefully--and creatively--curated exhibition, Theater Objects will surprise and impress architects, artists, and fans of both forms.

Book excerpt: The latest in the 2G Architecture series focuses on the Parisian based practice Bruther. Bruther is a French architectural studio based in Paris. Stéphanie Bru and Alexandre Theriot opened their office in 2007, at the very beginning of what capitalists call a 'crisis' and Marxists might define as new round of 'primitive accumulation and dispossession'. Having grown up and trained during the heyday of the French welfare state and inspired by the optimism of the early European Union, Bru and Theriot are well aware of the pressure that the political shift to the right, social inequality and insecurity about the future of Europe are exerting on public institutions. Bruther stands for a specific architecture, adapted to the needs of each project in order to offer maximal living conditions. Adaptability and evolutivity of the building are fundamentals in the office practice. Since 2007, Bruther have developed national and international projects such as Cultural and Sport Center Saint-Blaise (2014), Helsinki Central Library (2013) and New Generation Research Center (2015).

Book excerpt: A lyrical portrait of texture, light and the passage of time at the Suzhou gardens, from the author of The Intimacy of Making In the classical gardens of Suzhou in China, surface transforms into space and walls become landscapes. In her journey through this UNESCO World Heritage Site, London-based Swiss French photographer Hélène Binet (born 1959) captures the traces of environmental influences on built structures. Her impressive series of photography shows how weather and time have turned blank walls into vivid depictions of nature. In Binet's images, architecture becomes the frame for imaginary landscapes. By interweaving foreground and background, the artist tells stories that shift between the two dimensions of the plane and the three dimensions of space. In an accompanying essay, architect and writer Juhani Pallasmaa captures the dreamlike quality of the photographs and emphasizes Binet's skill of balancing precision and vagueness to create images that stimulate the viewer's imagination.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This issue focuses on the Belgian practice, architecten de vylder vinck taillieu, based in Ghent. Curated by guest editors, Seng Kuan and Angela Pang, it introduces 17 of their mostly recent works. Rather than providing objectives or primary information, a unique characteristic of the practice is that they prefer to emphasize the stories that connect people and things to buildings. Correspondingly, this issue is relatively sparing with data on scale and orientation, in favor of texts for each project that tell stories with futures. Their work, which can sometimes seem kitsch or surrealistic, is supported by their unique and surprisingly energetic approach, one that gives us the courage to continue trying something different. Text in English and Japanese.
