In response to the biennale’s title, “Fundamentals”, with the theme pitched by Rem Koolhaas to all participants about “Absorbing Modernity: 1914-2014”, the Indonesian team presents a historical record of the influence of craftsmanship and materials in the course of modern Indonesian architecture. This perspective was not widely discussed, although given the region’s many similarities it would not be a surprise that craftsmanship and materials also play a significant role in other Southeast Asian countries besides Indonesia.
