Book excerpt: The Camino site (16JE223) was a multi-component site located within the limits of a planned interior drainage canal to be constructed as part of the V-Levee Floodwall and Highway 45 Levee Closures, a feature of the Westwego to Harvey Canal, Louisiana Hurricane Protection Project, Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. Components revealed at the Camino site included a prehistoric shell midden; a late-eighteenth-century occupation, and an early-nineteenth-century occupation. These components were neither horizontally nor vertically discrete. The late-eighteenth-century component is presumed to be associated with the occupation of Bayou des Families by Canary Islanders (Islenos), who were settled there by the Spanish colonial government in 1779. The settlement was largely abandoned over the next several years. Nonetheless, a few households of Islenos remained in the area as late as the first decade of the nineteenth century. The prehistoric component consisted of two small Rangia deposits and a scatter of aboriginal ceramics. While some of the aboriginal ceramics were collected from the shell deposits, the majority were found mixed with European material at the site. Radiocarbon dates indicate that the occupation dates ca. A.D. 1020 to 1405. Evidence for the early-nineteenth-century occupation consists of several sherds of annular and green shell-edged pearlware, a few cut nails, a key, and a shovel. Some of the earlier material from the site may also date to this later occupation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excavations at the Historic Nance Farm were undertaken as part of a 2002 University of Texas at Arlington field school. The research design included questions surrounding the rotation of the house, how the material culture changed as a result of the railroad system, and whether historical data can be used to check the archaeological data. As excavations at the Historic Nance Farm were underway, hope that intact nineteenth-century deposits would be revealed were diminished. Although the intrasite stratigraphic integrity was significantly compromised, closer inspection of the artifacts revealed patterns suggesting a narrowly defined period during which the site was first occupied. Recovered artifacts indicate an occupation range slightly later in time than expected, but observation of other available data corroborated the information obtained from the subsurface testing. A conjunctive approach including superstructural analysis, ethnohistoric data, and comparative study of other contemporaneous archaeological sites in the vicinity illustrated that even the most disturbed sites can contribute to the history of a given region. The debate over the privileging of anthropology over history, which was once thought to be central to this thesis, has since been reviewed. There are numerous resources available to the historic archaeologist and an effective analysis of disturbed sites most greatly benefits from the utilization of all of the available data rather than the favoring of one resource over another. It was determined that a conjunctive approach for historical sites, especially those with compromised site integrity, is by far the best course of action. This thesis also raised the issue of perspective when investigating historic archaeological sites. There is difficulty in remaining objective in these endeavors, and this will be explored in this document.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from In the Midst of a Loneliness: The Architectural History of the Salinas Missions; Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument Historic Structure Report Congress established Salinas National Monument to set apart and preserve for the benefit and enjoyment of the American people the ruins of prehistoric Indian pueblos and associated seventeenth century, Franciscan Spanish mission ruins. In order to preserve these ruins, an effective plan of stabilization and maintenance is needed. The trouble with the stabilization and maintenance of a ruin, however, is that it inevitably changes the nature of the ruin. The visible stonework gradually, through small steps of repointing, dismantling and rebuilding, and capping, becomes the product of a generalized National Park Service policy rather than the product of a particular people at a particular time in the past. To slow down this process of the loss of the original nature or cultural imprint of a ruin, a careful maintenance program that minimizes changes to the appearance of the building is necessary. The most important single document for planning such a program is the Historic Structure Report, that determines the original appearance of a building and the previous attempts at stabilizing it. After its preparation, interpreters frequently use the Historic Structure Reports as one of the sources of information in their effort to make a site more understandable to the park visitor. This Historic Structure Report was written with the needs of both managers and interpreters in mind. The narratives of design, construction, and change over time attempt to present the life and the mind behind the structure, as well as the material of which it was made. This approach has led to some surprising insights. Most-significant among these was the determination that the present church of Abo had been partially torn down and enlarged at one time, and that the church of San Buenaventura had never been completed. Equally important in the author's mind is the definition of the methods of construction, the human activity itself. The buildings did not simply grow like weeds; human hands placed each rock on top of the others, and lifted each beam into place. Deagan, and author of Artifacts of Spanish Colonies In 1949, tantalizing discoveries of Spanish and Indian artifacts in the waters of Fig Springs in North Florida hinted at the location of an early seventeenth-century mission site. Forty years later, archaeologists returned to the area to search out and excavate the mission. Weisman's account of this search is an adventure in field archaeology and discovery, and he provides the first detailed description of an aboriginal habitation associated with an early Spanish mission. While many mission sites have been excavated in the colonial capital of St. Augustine and in the populous Apalachee Province near present-day Tallahassee, few detailed excavations have been carried out in the frontier province of Timucua, an early setting for the Franciscan effort to bring Christianity to Florida's native peoples. Still fewer excavations have concentrated on the village areas of the mission community. The dag at Fig Springs has revealed remarkably intact remains of several mission buildings as well as thousands of artifacts in and around the buildings found as they were left when the mission was abandoned in the mid-seventeenth century. Most important, Weisman shows, the artifacts, architecture, and community plan from this site demonstrate how mission culture evolved well beyond the religious dimension and combined traits of both European and aboriginal cultures. The well-preserved artifacts of activities such as cooking, tool making, house building, and trash disposal represent a trememdous archaeological resource for understanding the aboriginal experience of mission life--an experience not often mentioned in contemporary documentary sources. The richness of the site augments the traditional focus of research into the Florida mission period and helps to provide a more complete picture of the mission commmunity as a whole. Brent Richards Weisman is an archaeologist with the Florida Bureau of Archaeological Research in Tallahassee and is the author of Like Beads on a String: A Culture History of The Seminole Indians in Northern Peninsular Florida.
