Plaquemine, Louisiana, about 10 miles south of Baton Rouge on the banks of the Mississippi River, seems an unassuming southern community for which to designate an entire culture. Archaeological research conducted in the region between 1938 and 1941, however, revealed distinctive cultural materials that provided the basis for distinguishing a unique cultural manifestation in the Lower Mississippi Valley. Plaquemine was first cited in the archaeological literature by James Ford and Gordon Willey in their 1941 synthesis of eastern U.S. prehistory. Lower Valley researchers have subsequently grappled with where to place this culture in the local chronology based on its ceramics, earthen mounds, and habitations. Plaquemine cultural materials share some characteristics with other local cultures but differ significantly from Coles Creek and Mississippian cultures of the Southeast. Plaquemine has consequently received the dubious distinction of being defined by the characteristics it lacks, rather than by those it possesses. The current volume brings together eleven leading scholars devoted to shedding new light on Plaquemine and providing a clearer understanding of its relationship to other Native American cultures. The authors provide a thorough yet focused review of previous research, recent revelations, and directions for future research. Book excerpt: This report details the results of an archeological data recovery project at Darrow, Ascension Parish, Louisiana (16AN54). This project conducted in preparation for levee enlargement and concrete slope paving on the left bank of the Mississippi River fronting Darrow. The project will impact parts of the pre-1932 occupation of Darrow. Data recovery intended to obtain primarily artifactual data from the original town deposits with which to examine questions of archeological analysis methods in a Louisiana river town, inter and extra regional trade, comparisons with other river towns in other regions, plantation versus urban material cultural deposits and early rural versus later urban diet. Five areas were opened with a backhoe exposing buried historic deposits, four of which were widened and then sampled with 18, threefoot square, excavation units. A total of 3,075 square feet was thus exposed. A variety of analysis techniques were used to aid in dating and interpreting the site. 0ver 130 liters of soil were floated and water screened, and the material was analysed by a zooarcheologist and ethnobotanist. Conclusions about the town and about the practice of archeology in urban settings were drawn and the project area released for construction.

The Woodland Period (ca. 1200 B.C. to A.D. 1000) has been the subject of a great deal of archaeological research over the past 25 years. Researchers have learned that in this approximately 2000-year era the peoples of the Southeast experienced increasing sedentism, population growth, and organizational complexity. At the beginning of the period, people are assumed to have been living in small groups, loosely bound by collective burial rituals. But by the first millennium A.D., some parts of the region had densely packed civic ceremonial centers ruled by hereditary elites. Maize was now the primary food crop. Perhaps most importantly, the ancient animal-focused and hunting-based religion and cosmology were being replaced by solar and warfare iconography, consistent with societies dependent on agriculture, and whose elites were increasingly in competition with one another. This volume synthesizes the research on what happened during this era and how these changes came about while analyzing the period's archaeological record.
