Book excerpt: The latest in a series of reports on the archaeological excavations near London Bridge Station, this volume focuses on important discoveries relating to the origins and development of Roman Southwark. From the prehistoric period on this area formed the northernmost end of a series of sandy islands in the tidal reaches of the Thames. The earliest Roman features were drainage ditches and quarry pits associated with the construction of a road to the Thames bridgehead. Eight buildings were recorded along the eastern side of the road, including a blacksmiths' workshop. All of these buildings were destroyed by fire in the Boudican revolt of AD 60/61. New timber and masonry buildings were constructed in the area during the late 1st and 2nd centuries. These included shops, a market hall, and a warehouse. Excavations revealed that extensive land reclamation took place on the marginal eastern fringes of the island before the construction of 2nd and 3rd century houses. One of these houses contained a mosaic, and painted wall plaster was recorded to the west of the road with part of a large building interpreted as a mansio .

Book excerpt: This short monograph presents evidence related to medieval and later Southwark uncovered at London Bridge Station during construction of the Jubilee Line Extension. Early medieval Southwark was at risk from flooding, and evidence of the environment, land reclamation, embankments and drainage ditches has been found. The Domesday Book provides an early record of the settlement, and suggests that a Monesterium stood on the site of the present-day Southwark Cathedral. It was occupied by the Priory of St Mary Overie in the medieval period, when the bishops of Winchester had a palace in its grounds. St Thomas's Hospital was founded as part of the priory in 1106, and the settlement expanded around the bridgehead and Borough High Street. The hospital was rebuilt in the 13th century on the site of London Bridge Station to the east, where structural remains and associated burials were recorded. By the 16th century Borough High Street was known as 'Long Southwark' and scattered structural remains of the inns, alehouses and tenements which flanked it are described. Knight also discusses evidence for the Prior of Lewe's townhouse and Southwark's increasingly industrial character as trades relocated from the City of London. The volume includes a gazetteer of the 16 areas investigated.

Book excerpt: The 19th-century parish of St Saviour's, Southwark, teemed with people - the poor and destitute living in overcrowded houses with bad hygiene, drainage and waste disposal, and an inadequate and polluted water supply. This report combines archaeological, biological and documentary evidence, using this sample of 148 burials from the mid-a9th century - many of whom died young - to provide a window on a population struggling with harsh living conditions, who were poorly nourished and prone to infectious and deficiency diseases. Most were buried in cheap coffins and this heavily used, ill-kept and unconsecrated burial ground - which was closed in 1853 - contrasts with wealthy parishes elsewhere in London.
