Download or read book Proceedings of the Second International Conference on the Archaeology of the Fourth Nile Cataract, Berlin, August 4th - 6th, 2005 written by Claudia Näser and published by Otto Harrassowitz Verlag. This book was released on 2007 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The region of the Fourth Nile Cataract in northern Sudan is a hitherto little researched part of the Nile valley which will soon be ?ooded by the rising waters of a large hydro-electric dam. The reservoir will cause the irreversible loss of the rich cultural heritage of this remote part of the Middle Nile. As an answer to this threat the National Corporation for Antiquities and Museums of the Sudan inaugurated the Merowe Dam Archaeological Salvage Project, in which numerous international missions from several European countries and the United States participate. The volume assembles 20 papers from the ? elds of archaeology, ethnography and geography originally presented at the 2nd International Conference on the Archaeology of the 4th Nile Cataract held at Humboldt University Berlin in 2005. The contributions span a wide thematic and temporal range from general survey results and site excavation reports from different concessions to specialised articles on burial types, pottery, rock art, inscriptional material, site preservation and on the modern life of the Manasir people.

Book Synopsis From Aswan to Khartoum by : Lenka Varadzinová
Download or read book From Aswan to Khartoum written by Lenka Varadzinová and published by Czech Institute of Egyptology Charles University. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is concerned with the field research carried out in the Middle Nile region by the expeditions of the Czech (former Czechoslovak) Institute of Egyptology (Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague). The field projects described include the works performed in Lower Nubia in the framework of the UNESCO-organised salvage campaign necessitated in the 1960s by the building of the Aswan High Dam and, more recently, two research projects initiated by the Institute in the Sudan following an invitation by the National Corporation for Antiquities and Museums in 2009. The overview of the field projects is set into a broader context of the civilizational developments in the Middle Nile region and the history of its uncovering from the 19th century onwards. In that way, this richly illustrated book can serve as an introduction into the archaeology and cultural heritage of the Middle Nile.

Book Synopsis The Second Cataract Fortress of Dorginarti by : Lisa A Heidorn
Download or read book The Second Cataract Fortress of Dorginarti written by Lisa A Heidorn and published by Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures. This book was released on 2023-04-10 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The best-known sites along the length of the Nile River's Second Cataract are the ruins of Egyptian towns and fortresses occupied during the Old, Middle, and New Kingdoms. One of the fortresses in the Second Cataract region, Dorginarti existed in a later era than the better-known Middle and New Kingdom forts. The earliest ceramics found at the site date from the later tenth or early ninth century BC, and those from a later occupation stem from the early eighth century. The latest phase of occupation did not extend far beyond the first phase of Persian dominance in Egypt beginning in the last quarter of the sixth century BC. This volume is the final report of the emergency excavations undertaken at Dorginarti for five months in 1964 by the University of Chicago's Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures as part of the UNESCO Nubian salvage project necessitated by the building of the Aswan High Dam. Following a description of the fortress's landscape and resources, the book describes Dorginarti's architecture in detail and then presents the selection of artifacts brought back from the Sudan and stored in the ISAC Museum. The picture that emerges from the archaeological record shows the continuing importance of Lower Nubia after the withdrawal of Egyptian control in the late second millennium BC and before the rise of the Kushite empire in the Twenty-Fifth Dynasty.
