Download or read book Lone Star written by T. R. Fehrenbach and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2014-04-01 with total page 949 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive account of the incomparable Lone Star state by the author of Fire & Blood: A History of Mexico. T. R. Fehrenbach is a native Texan, military historian and the author of several important books about the region, but none as significant as this work, arguably the best single volume about Texas ever published. His account of America's most turbulent state offers a view that only an insider could capture. From the native tribes who lived there to the Spanish and French soldiers who wrested the territory for themselves, then to the dramatic ascension of the republic of Texas and the saga of the Civil War years. Fehrenbach describes the changes that disturbed the state as it forged its unique character. Most compelling is the one quality that would remain forever unchanged through centuries of upheaval: the courage of the men and women who struggled to realize their dreams in The Lone Star State.

Book Synopsis Changing Tides by : Robert S. Weddle
Download or read book Changing Tides written by Robert S. Weddle and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this crowning touch to his historical trilogy, Robert S. Weddle resumes the dramatic voyage of discovery and exploration in the Gulf of Mexico (the Spanish Sea) and along its coast. Combining thorough research with elegant narrative, Changing Tides treats the reader to political intrigue, tales of hurricanes and shipwrecks, and the rich historiography that marks the period between 1763 and 1803. The book opens with a series of territorial transfers that drove France from the North American continent and launched a flurry of exploration by Spain and England, each eager to survey its new territory and align its defenses. Spanish reconnaissance of the Texas barrier islands and lagoons in response to a rumored English threat and three voyages to survey and map the Gulf Coast west of the Mississippi River demonstrate international rivalry as a spur to exploration. The story concludes with Spain's retrocession of Louisiana to France and the immediate sale of the territory to the United States, a milestone toward the young nation's Manifest Destiny. Using sources previously underutilized by historians, Weddle raises new questions concerning events of the late eighteenth century and the politics that drove them, with emphasis on exploration and mapping in the Gulf. Scholars and students of Texas history, Spanish borderlands, and colonial America and Latin America will value this final installment in Weddle's meticulous, well-researched, and expertly written study.

Book Synopsis The Southern Journey of a Civil War Marine by : Edward T. Cotham
Download or read book The Southern Journey of a Civil War Marine written by Edward T. Cotham and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2009-09-15 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The confiscated Yankee diary that ran in the Confederate press, fully annotated and illustrated with drawings by a fellow Civil War Marine. On September 28, 1863, the Galveston Tri-Weekly News included an item headlined “A Yankee Note-Book.” It was the first installment of a diary confiscated from U.S. Marine Henry O. Gusley, who had been captured at the Battle of Sabine Pass. It was so popular, the newspaper made an ongoing series of the entire diary, running each excerpt twice. For Confederate readers, Gusley's diary provided a rare glimpse into the opinions and feelings of an ordinary Yankee, an enemy whom—they quickly discovered—it would be easy to regard as a friend. This book contains the complete text of Henry Gusley’s Civil War diary, expertly annotated and introduced by Edward Cotham. One of the few surviving journals by a U.S. Marine serving along the Gulf Coast, it records some of the most important naval campaigns of the Civil War, including the spectacular Union success at New Orleans and the embarrassing defeats at Galveston and Sabine Pass. It also offers an unmatched portrait of life aboard ship. It also includes previously unpublished drawings by Daniel Nestell—a doctor who served alongside Gusley—depicting many of the events the diary describes. Together, Gusley's diary and Nestell's drawings are like picture postcards from the Civil War: vivid, literary, moving dispatches from one of “Uncle Sam's nephews in the Gulf.”

Book excerpt: Translated from the Danish. Offers a comprehensive reading of Freud's contributions to psychoanalysis. Rather than a authors argue for a synthesis. As well as placing Freud in historical perspective the study deals with his analytic, therapeutic and theoretical works in detail. Sequel to the author's Spanish Sea: The Gulf of Mexico in North American Discovery, 1500-1685 (1985)--and a third volume is planned so that the completed trilogy will span 300 years and embrace the entire Gulf--this study of exploration rivalry takes into account what is often not considered and has lead to erroneous conclusions--the explorers' limited geographical knowledge and the consequent mistakes. Maps supplement the text, but the basic thrust is narration rather than cartography.
