This book was released on 1986 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the late winter and early spring of 1986, a research team from Gilbert/Commonwealth Inc. completed an archeological/historical inventory, pedestrian reconnaissance, and limited shovel testing for the proposed Flood Control project at Ft. Wayne, Indiana. The objective of the effort was to obtain initial inventory or 'impressions' of the historical and archeological resources of the project area sufficient to guide future research. This review resulted in the determination that a significant portion of the project area has been disturbed and is unlikely to contain intact archeological/historical resources. It was also determined that portions of the project area have escaped development or disturbance and have the potential to contain significant cultural resources. Detailed management recommendations are provided, and existing site information is listed to facilitate management considerations by Corps of Engineers personnel.

Book excerpt: To comply with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT) are required to determine the effects of federally-assisted transportation undertakings, including bridge replacements, on archaeological sites. In the past 30 years, hundreds of archaeological surveys have been conducted for local- and primary-system bridge replacement projects. These surveys often require costly and time-consuming subsurface excavation to search for sites that may be deeply buried in thick deposits of alluvial (stream-deposited) sediments. An alternative approach would be to use knowledge gained from previous surveys to assess the archaeological potential of a proposed bridge replacement project before, and if possible instead of, committing resources to an archaeological survey. All the information needed to make such assessments, including archaeology, soils, geomorphology, and land-use history, can be assembled, viewed, and analyzed using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). In this report, the University of Iowa Office of the State Archaeologist (OSA) explores the feasibility of using GIS data to evaluate archaeological survey needs for Iowa DOT bridge replacements. The resultant Bridges Decision Support Model integrates information on archaeological sites, surveys, bridges, and their geological contexts. The model will help streamline the Section 106 process by facilitating communication and information transfer; by providing consistent, well-informed, and uniformly-applied decision criteria; and by improving the cost-effectiveness of cultural resource compliance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of our aims in the book is to provide geologists with a sound basis for making their own well founded interpretations. For that reason we cover not only concepts about processes, and the nature of the products, but also methods and approaches that may be useful in analysing both modern and ancient successions. Most importantly, we treat the diversity of products in volcanic terrains as facies, and we use the method of facies analysis and interpretation as a means of constructing facies models for different volcanic settings. These models will, we hope, be useful as norms for comparison for workers in ancient terrains. The idea for this book came into being between 1981 and 1982 when J. V. W. came to Monash University to take up a Monash Postdoctoral Fellowship. During this period a short course on facies analysis in modern and ancient successions was put together, integrating J.V.W.'s extensive volcanological experience in numerous modern volcanic terrains with R.A.F.C.'s extensive sedimentological and volcanological experience in older volcanic and associated sedimentary successions in the Palaeozoic and Precambrian of Australia. The enthusiastic response from the participants to the first short course, taught in May 1982, and to subsequent annual re-runs, encouraged us to develop the short course notes into this book. The idea for both the short course and the book arose because we felt that there was no single source available that comprehensively attempted to address the problems of analysing, interpreting and understanding the complexity of processes, products and stratigraphy in volcanic terrains.

Book excerpt: Incorporated in 1887, South St. Paul grew rapidly as the blue-collar counterpart to the bright lights and sophistication of its cosmopolitan neighbors Minneapolis and St. Paul. Its prosperous stockyards and slaughterhouses ranked the city among America's largest meatpacking centers. The proud city fell on hard economic times in the second half of the twentieth century. Broad swaths of empty buildings were razed as an enticement to promised redevelopment programs that never happened. In 1990, South St. Paul began to chart out its own successful path to renewal with a pristine riverfront park, a trail system and a business park where the stockyards once stood. Author and historian Lois A. Glewwe brings the story of the city's revival to life in this history of a remarkable community.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Placing American Indians in the center of the story, Restoring a Presence relates an entirely new history of Yellowstone National Park. Although new laws have been enacted giving American Indians access to resources on public lands, Yellowstone historically has excluded Indians and their needs from its mission. Each of the other flagship national parks—Glacier, Yosemite, Mesa Verde, and Grand Canyon—has had successful long-term relationships with American Indian groups even as it has sought to emulate Yellowstone in other dimensions of national park administration. In the first comprehensive account of Indians in and around Yellowstone, Peter Nabokov and Lawrence Loendorf seek to correct this administrative disparity. Drawing from archaeological records, Indian testimony, tribal archives, and collections of early artifacts from the Park, the authors trace the interactions of nearly a dozen Indian groups with each of Yellowstone’s four geographic regions. Restoring a Presence is illustrated with historical and contemporary photographs and maps and features narratives on subjects ranging from traditional Indian uses of plant, mineral, and animal resources to conflicts involving the Nez Perce, Bannock, and Sheep Eater peoples. By considering the many roles Indians have played in the complex history of the Yellowstone region, authors Nabokov and Loendorf provide a basis on which the National Park Service and other federal agencies can develop more effective relationships with Indian groups in the Yellowstone region.
