Book excerpt: This report presents the results of archaeological investigations conducted by North Texas State University at two Corps of Engineers reservoirs on the San Gabriel River in Central Texas. The archaeology project consisted of site survey, evaluation, and data recovery of endangered cultural resources at North Fork and Granger Reservoirs. Eighty new prehistoric and one hundred historic sites were recorded, of which nine prehistoric and thirteen historic sites had further study. Additional research involved the Hoxie Ranch, and evaluations of a Paleo-Indian site (41WM419), and the Cervenka Site (41WM267). The two reservoirs, located in different environmental zones, offered an opportunity to examine varying human adaptations. First, the cultural patterns of the two reservoirs were delineated. Next, the adaptive patterns and artifact assemblages were compared to determine if the two reservoirs were part of the same cultural area. Contributions to Central Texas archaeology include: 1) the chronology of human occupation has been augmented by thirty-seven radiocarbon dates; 2) an alternative to current models of prehistoric adaptation for the area is proposed; 3) an interpretation of the occurrence of burned rock middens has been presented; 34) an evaluation of the 'phase' concept in Central Texas indicated the geographical boundaries of the phases varied through time.

Distributed over a known area of more than 500,000 square miles, it is one of the largest post-Paleoindian archaeological cultural complexes identified to date. One of the most notable aspects of Calf Creek culture is its distinctive, deeply notched bifaces, many of which show evidence of heat-treating. Archaeological studies over the past eighty years have reconstructed their subsistence, technology, and settlement patterns, but until now little information has been available on their burial practices, due to the scarcity of known burial sites. This detailed archaeological report describes the human skeletal remains, burial furnishings, and fauna recovered from Bering Sinkhole in Kerr County, the first carefully excavated hunter-gatherer burial site in central Texas. The remains in Bering Sinkhole were deposited from 7,500 to 2,000 years ago. Leland Bement's analysis reveals a growing elaboration in burial rituals during the period and also uncovers important data on the diet and health of the hunter-gatherers. He discusses climate change based on faunal remains and compares burial goods such as bone, antler, freshwater shell, marine shell, turtle, and stone artifacts with those found at other Texas mortuary sites and with deposits at hunter-gatherer habitation sites in Central Texas.
