Humanity has split into two main factions. The Arc Alliance uses a type of energy developed from magic to power all sorts of technological marvels. Then there is the Holy Empire of the Eternal Light, which relies on the power of their god and the miracles that it allows them to perform. The two factions are currently at war with each other and have been so for three hundred years. However, both sides have agreed to specific rules, so fighting is contained in a contained area known as the War Belt. It is on an Alliance-controlled planet within the War Belt, where the main character lives. Mordred is a young woman in her early twenties who works as a mercenary. As she was abandoned as a child and forced to live on the streets, along with the planet she is on, Outlier is a very impoverished planet. There was little other work she could do. She also has another reason for being a mercenary: finding her father, who disappeared seventeen years ago. After a complicated mission, Mordred finds herself entangled in the schemes of forces much larger and more powerful than she could possibly imagine. She encounters many allies along the way, but the lines between friend and foe start to blend, as things are not exactly what they seem. Mordred is faced with many challenges and will be forced to confront herself, along with the reality she resides within. As the drums of war grow louder and tensions start to rise, Mordred will be forced to decide that will affect everything she knows.

As one of the Kordolian Military's infamous First Division, he's one of the most feared warriors in the Nine Galaxies. As a pilot, his skill is unmatched. He doesn't like the unpredictable, and humans are exactly that. One by one, he's seen his brothers fall to these confounding creatures. Even the most battle-hardened and ruthless of them have succumbed to the Mating Fever. Humans are trouble. Humans bring chaos. Always. When he encounters the strange human called Tasha, all his warning alarms go off. She isn't anything like the other humans. She's faster; stronger-artificially so. She has secrets; she tells lies. A trail of blood-scent lingers around her. She is not the kind of human he would imagine as his mate. But Lodan's control is about to be sorely tested-in more ways than one.

Book excerpt: In this brilliant debut fantasy, a story of secrets, rebellion, and murder are shattering the Hollows, where magic costs memory to use, and only the son of the kingdom’s despised traitor holds the truth. Michael is branded a traitor as a child because of the murder of the king’s nine-year-old son, by his father David Kingman. Ten years later on Michael lives a hardscrabble life, with his sister Gwen, performing crimes with his friends against minor royals in a weak attempt at striking back at the world that rejects him and his family. In a world where memory is the coin that pays for magic, Michael knows something is there in the hot white emptiness of his mind. So when the opportunity arrives to get folded back into court, via the most politically dangerous member of the kingdom’s royal council, Michael takes it, desperate to find a way back to his past. He discovers a royal family that is spiraling into a self-serving dictatorship as gun-wielding rebels clash against magically trained militia. What the truth holds is a set of shocking revelations that will completely change the Hollows, if Michael and his friends and family can survive long enough to see it.

Book excerpt: In medieval and Renaissance Europe, mercenaries--professional soldiers who fought for money or other rewards--played violent, colorful, international roles in warfare, but they have received relatively little scholarly attention. In this book a large number of vignettes portray their activities in Western Europe over a period of nearly 900 years, from the Merovingian mercenaries of 752 through the Thirty Years' War, which ended in 1648. Intended as an introduction to the subject and drawing heavily on contemporary first-person accounts, the book creates a vivid but balanced mosaic of the many thousands of mercenaries who were hired to fight for various employers.

Possessed of the East's most modern army, Japan now looks avariciously towards its neighbours. The next decade will decide whether the ancient empires of the East survive or are washed away, and every one of the Great Powers wants their slice.

Three decades and countless successes later, Lucas announced semiretirement in 2012 and sold his highly successful production company, Lucasfilm, to Disney. His achievements have earned him the Academy's Irving G. Thalberg Award, the American Film Institute's Life Achievement Award, induction into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame and the California Hall of Fame, and a National Medal of Arts presented by President Barack Obama. Lucas: His Hollywood Legacy is the first collection to bring a sustained scholarly perspective to the iconic filmmaker and his legacy beyond the Star Wars films. Book excerpt: ‘I make no apologies for being a mercenary soldier. Quite the reverse. I am proud to have led 5 Commando. I am proud to have fought shoulder to shoulder with the toughest and bravest band of men it has ever been my honor to command. I am proud that they stood when all else failed.’ In July 1964, four years after gaining independence from Belgium, the Democratic Republic of the Congo came under threat from an armed rebellion that spread rapidly through the country. To suppress the rebels and bring the unrest and bloodshed in the country under control, Congolese officials enlisted the help of mercenary leader Mike Hoare. Working alongside military officials, Hoare assembled a band of several hundred men that became known as ‘5 Commando’. In Congo Mercenary, Hoare tells the story of the role that these men played in the rebellion, describing in gripping detail how this band of mercenaries were recruited, trained, and how they swept through the country. His team undertook four campaigns in just 18 months during which they fought rebels, liberated Stanleyville, freed European hostages and brought order back to the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Hoare’s experiences in the Congo and his involvement in suppressing the Simba rebellion were hugely significant from a political and a military standpoint. His influence, however, did not stop there. This account of his time in the Congo was first published in 1967 and had a huge cultural impact, as well, contributing to the glorification of the mercenary lifestyle in magazines and pulp novels, and even inspiring the 1978 war film The Wild Geese starring Richard Burton and Roger Moore.
