Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost all museums hold photographs in their collections, and museum professionals and their audiences engage with photographs in a myriad of ways. Yet despite some three decades of critical museology and photographic theory, and an extensive debate on the politics of representation, outside art museums, almost no critical attention has been given specifically to the roles, purposes and lives of these photographs within museums. This book brings into focus the ubiquitous yet entirely unconsidered work that photographs are put to in museums. The authors' argument is that there is an economy of photographs in museums which is integral to the processes of the museum, and integral to the understanding of museums. The international contributors, drawn from curators and academics, reflect a range of visual and museological expertise. After an introduction setting out the range of questions and problems, the first part addresses broad curatorial strategies and ways of thinking about photographs in museums. Shifting the emphasis from curatorial practices and anxieties to the space of the gallery, this is followed by a series of case studies of exhibitionary practices and the museum strategies that support them. The third section focuses on the role of photographs in the museum articulation of ’difficult histories’. A final section addresses photograph collections in a digital environment. New technologies and new media have transformed the management, address and purposing in photographs in museums, from cataloguing practices to streaming on social media. These growing practices challenge both traditional hierarchies of knowledge in museums and the location of authority about photographs. The volume emerges from PhotoCLEC, a HERA funded project on museums and the photographic legacy of the colonial past in a postcolonial and multicultural Europe.

Book excerpt: Books such as In Memory of Myself and Poste Restante, not to mention a position as head of the eminent Fotoskolan academy in Stockholm, made Christer Stràmholm one of Sweden's most influential twentieth-century photographers. He differed from his colleagues in other ways, too--for instance, he didn't mind being the subject of a photograph himself. In fact, he enjoyed it. Stràmholm passed away in 2002, but these portraits of him by some of Europe's finest photographers, including Lars Tunbjàrk, JH Engstràm and Anders Petersen, live on.

Book excerpt: Tall, skinny, short, round, squat, awkward, slouched, tanned, bashful, and sometimes unknowingly beautiful, the adolescents in Rineke Dijkstra's "Beach Portraits" stand alone, the ocean rolling behind them. Clad in little more than bathing suits, these young people are striking to behold. Remarkably clear and formally classical, each subject is frontally posed and shot straight on; the resulting photographs participate in a cold, quasi-scientific categorization reminiscent of the work of August Sander and Thomas Ruff. Yet Dijkstra's pictures are not just that--there is also something of the eccentric in them, something that comes closer to Diane Arbus's images. Seen together, the complete series of 20 "Beach Portraits" creates a kind of collective portrait of the existential insecurity and awkward beauty of youth.

Book excerpt: THE ROAD I CALL HOME is a significant book spotlighting the breathtaking photographic portraits of the homeless and their stories. Through the lens of multi award winning, prominent photographer, filmmaker and humanitarian, Randy Bacon, THE ROAD I CALL HOME beautifully presents over 200 pages of portraits and narratives from the exhibition, which has traveled to numerous museums, galleries and venues nationwide. THE ROAD I CALL HOME features simple, direct, emotive, casual studio portraits that emphasize the beauty, dignity and integrity of the homeless and is accompanied by heartfelt narratives, personally told by each person. The unforgettable photography and stories are rooted in compassion and belief that, as a community, we can approach homelessness by choosing to see the beauty of each person in front of us - rather than the issues that overwhelm us. Homelessness is an issue that can easily overwhelm us. You don't have to go far in everyday life to literally come face-to-face with homelessness. We see the stark reality as we drive through our communities, as we walk down our streets and within the media. We see the heartbreaking struggle of too many people that don't have a house, which stirs emotion in each of us. Homelessness is an issue of humanity - over 600,000 people are homeless in the United States, a staggering 150 million humans living homeless worldwide and almost 2 billion living with inadequate housing. THE ROAD I CALL HOME looks to build new awareness about our relationship to homelessness and to each other - to give a voice to the voiceless and begin conversations that will be catalysts for people to get involved. THE ROAD I CALL HOME challenges viewers to look at homelessness with eyes of love and compassion, not negative judgment - to inspire people to simply acknowledge those in need, trusting that we are the same and just wanting to love and be loved. When we take time to listen to another person's journey, we begin the process of turning a stranger into a friend and opening our hearts to another human being.

Book excerpt: In 1971, with an advertisement in the June issue of Artforum, Diane Arbus announced the offering of her limited-edition portfolio, A box of ten photographs. At the time of her death, one month later, only four were sold. Two were purchased from Arbus by Richard Avedon; another by Jasper Johns. The last of the four was purchased by Bea Feitler, art director at Harper's Bazaar. Arbus signed the prints in all four sets, and each was accompanied by an overlying vellum sheet inscribed with an extended caption. For Feitler, Arbus added an eleventh photograph. This is the first publication to focus exclusively on A box of ten photographs, using the eleven-print set that Arbus assembled for Feitler. It was acquired by the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C., in 1986, and is the only one of the four portfolios completed and sold by Arbus that is publicly held. This publication examines this unique object as the sole body of images selected by Arbus herself, and considers its legacy as a key document of her enduring impact on contemporary photographic practice. An in-depth essay features new and compelling scholarship by John P. Jacob, the McEvoy Family Curator for Photography at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. The book is published in conjunction with the exhibition Diane Arbus: A box of ten photographs, on view at the museum from April through September of 2018.

Book excerpt: On Being an Angel takes its title from a caption the artist inscribed on two of her photographs--self-portraits with her head thrust back and her chest thrust forward. Typical of Woodman's work in the way they cast the female body as simultaneously physical and immaterial, these photographs and the evocative title they share are apt choices to encapsulate the work of an artist whose legacy has been unavoidably colored by her tragic personal biography and her death, at age 22, by suicide. In less than a decade, Woodman produced a fascinating body of work--in black and white and in color--exploring gender, representation, sexuality and the body through the photographing of her own body and those of her friends. Since her death, Woodman's influence continues to grow: her work has been the subject of numerous in-depth studies and exhibitions in recent years, and her photographs have inspired artists all over the world. Published to accompany a travelling exhibition of Woodman's work, Francesca Woodman: On Being an Angel offers a comprehensive overview of Woodman's oeuvre, organized chronologically, with texts by Anna Tellgren, Anna-Karin Palm and the artist's father, George Woodman. Francesca Woodman (1958-81) was born in Denver, Colorado, to an artistic family and began experimenting with photography as a teenager. In 1975 she attended the Rhode Island School of Design, and in 1979 she moved to New York to attempt to build a career in photography. Woodman's working career was intense but brief, cut short by her death in 1981.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current Critical Debates in the Field of Transsexual Studies introduces new thinking on non-conforming gender representation, addressing transsexuality as a subjective experience that highlights universal dilemmas related to how we conceive identity and exploring universal questions related to gender: its objects, objections, and obstacles. This book seeks to disassemble prejudicial orientations to the challenges and the everydayness of transsexuality and build new understanding and responses to issues including: medical biases, the problem of authenticity, and the agency of the child. Oren Gozlen leads an examination of three central pressures: transformation of a medical model, the social experience of becoming transgender, and the question of self-representation through popular culture. The chapters reframe several contemporary dilemmas, such as: authenticity, pathology, normativity, creativity, the place of the clinic as a problem of authority, the unpredictability of sexuality, the struggle with limits of knowledge, a demand for intelligibility and desire for certainty. The contributors consider sociocultural, theoretical, therapeutic, and legal approaches to transsexuality that reveal its inherent instability and fluidity both as concept and as experience. They place transsexuality in tension and transition as a concept, as a subject position, and as a subjectivity. The book also reflects the way in which political and cultural change affects self and other representations of the transsexual person and their others, asking: how does the subject metabolize the anxieties that relate to these transformations and facilitations? How can the subject respond in contexts of hostility and prohibition? Offering a much-needed interdisciplinary exploration, Current Critical Debates in the Field of Transsexual Studies will appeal to psychoanalysts and psychotherapist as well as psychologists and scholars of gender studies, cultural studies and sociology.
