In Deutschland gibt es Berufe, die ein hohes Ansehen und Einkommen erzielen und Berufe wie die Soziale Arbeit, bei denen beides verhältnismäßig gering ausfällt. Doch was sind Faktoren, nach denen Berufe bewertet und anerkannt werden? Wie wirkt sich der Status eines "Frauenberufes" auf die Anerkennung aus? Daher liegt ein besonderer Fokus der Arbeit auf Genderaspekten: Welchen Einfluss hat die weibliche Prägung der Profession auf berufspolitische, ökonomische und gesellschaftliche Strukturen? Die Arbeit gliedert sich in zwei große Teile: Im ersten Teil der Arbeit werden relevante historische sowie aktuelle Prozesse und Entwicklungen analysiert, welche wesentlich sind, um die heutige Situation verstehen zu können. Nach diesen Faktoren, kann der daraus resultierende, heutige Ist-Zustand erklärt werden. Dies ist der zweite große Teil der Arbeit. Es handelt sich demnach um eine komplexe Verzahnung von Gegebenheiten, deren Wirken miteinander betrachtet werden sollte. Es werden Antworten auf die Frage gefunden, warum die Soziale Arbeit, verglichen mit anderen Professionen, verhältnismäßig geringe Anerkennung und Löhne verzeichnet: Hierarchien von Anerkennung, begründet durch Wertmuster und kulturelle Zuschreibungen, äußern sich in einer geschlechterhierarchischen Arbeitsteilung. So teilen diese zum einen in Reproduktions- und Produktionsarbeit. This new form of management constitutes some workers as self-auditing, self-regulating actors who are disembedded from a social context while defining others as too entwined in social relations and unable to self-manage.Privatizing Poland examines the effects privatization has on workers' self-concepts; how changes in "personhood" relate to economic and political transitions; and how globalization and foreign capital investment affect Eastern Europe's integration into the world economy. Dunn investigates these topics through a study of workers and changing management techniques at the Alima-Gerber factory in Rzeszów, Poland, formerly a state-owned enterprise, which was privatized by the Gerber Products Company of Fremont, Michigan.Alima-Gerber instituted rigid quality control, job evaluation, and training methods, and developed sophisticated distribution techniques. The core principle underlying these goals and strategies, the author finds, is the belief that in order to produce goods for a capitalist market, workers for a capitalist enterprise must also be produced. The debate on the interpreta tion of these findings - social causation versus social selection processes - continues to this day. Moreover, the question as to what the psychoso cial processes are through which social class and individual psychopa thology are mediated has remained mostly unanswered. The concept of social stress may well provide new insights in this regard. One should note, in particular, the considerable conceptual and methodological progress made in life event research. Recently, the first attempts have been made to link the two concepts of social class and social stress. These developments will be retraced in this book in the light of new investigations. Descriptive epidemiological studies on the relation between social class and psychiatric disorders form the point of depar ture. Explicit reference is made to two classical studies in psychiatric epidemiology: Faris and Dunham's Chicago study and the New Haven study by Hollingshead and Redlich. Following on from there, various approaches in analytical epidemiological research are presented which attempt to determine whether - or, more precisely, to what extent - social causation or social selection processes can be said to be responsible for the higher rates of psychiatric disorders in lower social strata.
