Book Synopsis A New Course in Reading Pali by : James W. Gair
Download or read book A New Course in Reading Pali written by James W. Gair and published by Motilal Banarsidass. This book was released on 2017-01-01 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended and serve as an introduction to the reading of Pali texts. For that purpose, it uses authentic readings especially compiled for the purpose drawn largely from Theravada canonical works, both prose and poetry. The reading are in Roman script, and carefully graded for difficulty, but they have also been selected so that each of them is a meaningful and complete reading in itself, so as to introduce some basic concepts and ways of thought of Theravada Buddhism. This book thus offers and opportunity to become acquainted with the ways in which the teachings of the Buddha are embodied in the language, a sense that it impossible to determine from English translations. The book contains 12 lessons. Each of them has three parts: (1) a set of basic readings and an accompanying glossary, (2) grammatical notes on the forms in the less, and (3) a set of further readings with its own glossary. The further readings introduce no new grammatical points, but reinforce ones already presented and give further practice in them. The work concludes, fittingly, with the Buddhaês first sermon, The Dhammacakkapavattana Sutta. A cumulative glossary and index to the grammar is also provided. The text has been used successfully in its preliminary form at several universities, but it may also be used for self-study. For more information, please log on to www.mlbd.co.in

Download or read book A History of Mindfulness written by Bhikkhu Sujato and published by Bhikkhu Sujato. This book was released on 2011-07-18 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Satipaṭṭhāna Sutta is the most influential scripture in Buddhist meditation. It is the foundation text for the modern schools of 'vipassanā' or 'insight' meditation. The well-known Pali discourse is, however, only one of many early Buddhist texts that deal with mindfulness. This is the first full-scale study to encompass all extant versions of the Satipaṭṭhāna Sutta, taking into account the dynamic evolution of the Buddhist scriptures and the broader Indian meditative culture. A new vision emerges from this groundbreaking study: mindfulness is not a system of 'dry insight' but is the 'way to convergence' leading the mind to deep states of peace.

Chief among these are manuscripts, a vital source for our understanding of Buddhist ideas and practices in the region. They are also a beautiful art form, too little understood in the West. The British Library has one of the richest collections of Southeast Asian manuscripts, principally from Thailand and Burma, anywhere in the world. It includes finely painted copies of Buddhist scriptures, literary works, historical narratives, and works on traditional medicine, law, cosmology, and fortune-telling. Buddhism Illuminated includes over one hundred examples of Buddhist art from the Library’s collection, relating each manuscript to Theravada tradition and beliefs, and introducing the historical, artistic, and religious contexts of their production. It is the first book in English to showcase the beauty and variety of Buddhist manuscript art and reproduces many works that have never before been photographed.

Book Synopsis Establishments of Mindfulness by : Kiribathgoda Gnanananda
Download or read book Establishments of Mindfulness written by Kiribathgoda Gnanananda and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-02-18 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before this publication, I wrote a comprehensive commentary on the Maha Satipatthana Sutta (The Great Discourse on the Establishments of Mindfulness) based on excerpts from various suttas. The book was published under the title The Supreme Bliss of Nibbana, and gained recognition from pious Buddhist Devotees. Though devotees have for quite some time been requesting that I furnish a book that is suited for chanting the Maha Satipatthana Sutta in both Pali and Sinhala languages, so far it was delayed as I was busy. This publication is in response to the request made by those devotees. If a person melodiously chants this Pali-Sinhala Maha Satipatthana Discourse in a peaceful place in his home, in a stupa compound or under the shade of a Bodhi-tree, or any other suitable location, by doing so they can accrue both the great merit of chanting the Dhamma of the Tatagatha and the great merit of contemplating on the Dhamma. To make the chanting easier for you, places you are supposed to pause are marked with the / sign. By chanting this Maha Satipatthana Sutta, you have the fortune of getting a clear interpretation of the Four Noble Truths from the words of the Buddha himself. Therefore I bless you to accrue exquisite merit by melodiously chanting this Maha Satipatthana Sutta with a pleasant mind, contemplating on its meaning. By the influence of the merits thus gained, may you realise the Four Noble Truths in this Gauthama Buddha's Dispensation! (This book is a translation of Buddhist scriptures found in the Sutta Pitaka, preserved in the Theravada Buddhist tradition.)

Download or read book Heartwood written by Wendy Cadge and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2008-10-10 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theravada is one of the three main branches of Buddhism. In Asia it is practiced widely in Thailand, Laos, Burma, Sri Lanka, and Cambodia. This fascinating ethnography opens a window onto two communities of Theravada Buddhists in contemporary America: one outside Philadelphia that is composed largely of Thai immigrants and one outside Boston that consists mainly of white converts. Wendy Cadge first provides a historical overview of Theravada Buddhism and considers its specific origins here in the United States. She then brings her findings to bear on issues of personal identity, immigration, cultural assimilation, and the nature of religion in everyday life. Her work is the first systematic comparison of the ways in which immigrant and convert Buddhists understand, practice, and adapt the Buddhist tradition in America. The men and women whom Cadge meets and observes speak directly to us in this work, both in their personal testimonials and as they meditate, pray, and practice Buddhism. Creative and insightful, Heartwood will be of enormous value to sociologists of religion and anyone wishing to understand the rise of Buddhism in the Western world.
