Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starting from 135 manuscripts that were once part of the library of the late Mamluk sultan Qāniṣawh al-Ghawrī (r. 1501–1516), this book challenges the dominant narrative of a "post-court era", in which courts were increasingly marginalized in the field of adab. Rather than being the literary barren field that much of the Arabic and Arabic-centred sources, produced extra muros, would have us believe, it re-cognizes Qāniṣawh's court as a rich and vibrant literary site and a cosmopolitan hub in a burgeoning Turkic literary ecumene. It also re-centres the ruler himself within this court. No longer the passive object of panegyric or the source of patronage alone, Qāniṣawh has an authorial voice in his own right, one that is idiosyncratic yet in conversation with other voices. As such, while this book is first and foremost a book about books, it is one that consciously aspires to be more than that: a book about a library, and, ultimately, a book about the man behind the library, Qāniṣawh al-Ghawrī.

Book excerpt: Using both scientific and feminist approaches in its analysis, Sex and Gender: A Biopsychological Approach provides a current and comprehensive understanding of its titular topics, making it an invaluable textbook for instructors and students. Sex and gender can only be properly understood when examined in the contexts of biological, psychological, and social processes and the interactions between those processes. The structure of this book facilitates this necessary exhaustive discussion: First section: a biological analysis that discusses evolutionary, cellular, and genetic processes, and their effects on physical and behavioral development Second section: a psychological and sociological analysis that discusses stereotypes, sexism, and theories of gender Final section: a discussion of the current global challenges surrounding sex and gender, such as discrimination and religious and social oppression of various groups Across chapters: bonus features that can be used as discussion topics, student essay topics, or special topics for instructors to expand the text’s discussion into the classroom The text’s unique focus on biological, psychological, and social processes – as separate entities and interacting processes – make Sex and Gender crucial for a comprehensive and advanced understanding of the subject. This is an essential resource for instructors who want to bring a thorough and complex analysis of sex and gender studies to their classrooms.

Book excerpt: Conversations with Lacan: Seven Lectures for Understanding Lacan brings a unique, non-partisan approach to the work of Jacques Lacan, linking his psychoanalytic theory and ideas to broader debates in philosophy and the social sciences, in a book that shows how it is possible to see the value of Lacanian concepts without necessarily being defined by them. In accessible, conversational language, the book provides a clear-sighted overview of the key ideas within Lacan’s work, situating them at the apex of the linguistic turn. It deconstructs the three Lacanian orders – the symbolic, the imaginary, and the real – as well as a range of core Lacanian concepts, including alienation and separation, après-coup, and the Lacanian doctrine of temporality. Arguing that criticism of psychoanalysis for a lack of scientificity should be accepted by the discipline, the book suggests that the work of Lacan can be helpful in re-conceptualizing the role of psychoanalysis in the future. This accessible introduction to the work of Jacques Lacan will be essential reading for anyone coming to Lacan for the first time, as well as clinicians and scholars already familiar with his work. It will appeal to psychoanalysts, psychotherapists, and scholars of philosophy and cultural studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1903 Mrdang aur Tabla Vadanpaddhati is a revelatory text that has never been translated or analysed. It is a manual for playing the two most important drums of North Indian (Hindustani) music, the pakhavaj (mrdang) and the tabla. Owing to its relative obscurity, it is a source that has never been discussed in the literature on Hindustani music. Its author, Gurudev Patwardhan, was Vice Principal of V.D. Paluskar's first music school in Lahore from its inception in 1901 to 1908. Professor James Kippen provides the first translation of this immensely important text and examines its startling implications for rhythmic and metric theory. It is the earliest work on Indian drumming to contain a notation sufficiently precise to allow definitive reconstruction. The compositions are of considerable musical interest, for they can be readily realized on the tabla or pakhavaj. Kippen sets the work and objectives of the original author in the context of a rich historical, social and political background. By also discussing radical differences in the second edition of 1938, published by Gurudev's nephew, the vocalist Vinayakrao Patwardhan, Kippen illuminates the process by which 'tabla theory' was being created in the early 20th century. Both Patwardhans were enthusiastic supporters of Paluskar's nationalist imperatives, and active participants in his drive to institutionalize music, codify and publish notations of it, and promote a modern, Hindu vision of India wherein its identity could once again be linked to a glorious golden age in distant antiquity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book dedicated to the Contemporary Freudian Tradition. In its introduction, and through its selection of papers, it describes the development and rich diversity of this tradition over recent decades, showing how theory and practice are inseparable in the psychoanalytic treatment of children, adolescents and adults. The book is organized around four major concerns in the Contemporary Freudian Tradition: the nature of the Unconscious and the ways that it manifests itself; the extension of Freud’s theories of development through the work of Anna Freud and later theorists; the body and psychosexuality, including the centrality of bodily experience as it is elaborated over time in the life of the individual; and aggression. It also illustrates how within the Tradition different exponents have been influenced by psychoanalytic thinking outside it, whether from the Kleinian and Independent Groups, or from French Freudian thinking. Throughout the book there is strong emphasis on the clinical setting, in, for example, the value of the Tradition’s approach to the complex interrelationship of body and mind in promoting a deeper understanding of somatic symptoms and illnesses and working with them. There are four papers on the subject of dreams within the Contemporary Freudian Tradition, illustrating the continuing importance accorded to dreams and dreaming in psychoanalytic treatment. This is the only book that describes in detail the family resemblances shared by those working psychoanalytically within the richly diverse Contemporary Freudian Tradition. It should appeal to anyone, from student onwards, who is interested in the living tradition of Freud’s work as understood by one of the three major groups within British psychoanalysis.

Book excerpt: Leading teacher of Arabic, Munther Younes, explores the realities of teaching Arabic as a foreign language (AFL) and outlines his groundbreaking approach to instruction, tried and tested over many years at Cornell University. The Integrated Approach to Arabic Instruction introduces teachers to the features of an integrated Arabic program—one that simultaneously teaches the two varieties of the language, Modern Standard Written Arabic, fuṣḥā, and the dialect, āmmiyya, in a way that reflects the authentic practice of native Arabic speakers. This pedagogy, Younes argues, is the most logical, effective and economical method of instruction as it prepares students fully for the realities of the Arabic diglossic situation. Younes takes teachers through the following ground: Consideration of the current Arabic sociolinguistic situation and key debates in the field Outline of changing student goals and the needs of the modern AFL learner Overview of the Integrated Approach covering its rationale, features, implementation methods and usage of instructional materials in the classroom Response to objections to the Integrated Approach, outlining its advantages over alternative practices and clarifying crucial issues in practice The Integrated Approach to Arabic Instruction addresses a pressing issue deeply relevant to the world of Arabic language instruction, placed in the practical context of shifting attitudes among students and educators. It will be an essential resource for all teachers of Arabic as a Foreign Language.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Very little has been written about Lady Khadija daughter of Khuwaylid, the first wife of Prophet Muhammed; therefore, the author thinks that a book like this is needed not only by the Islamic library, but by the cultural library of the world. Khadija's impacton the lives of people went far beyond her time and will always continue. This tri-lingual book contains a beautiful love story. A woman falls in love, so she composes romantic poems expressing her feelings, defying the male chauvinism of the time. If you enjoy romance, read this book. If you enjoy history, this is your book, and if you prefer biography, this is surely a biography book that takes you back to the time when the Prophet of Islam was 25 years old, that is, to A.D. 570, and its events take place in the trade metropolis of Mecca, Hijaz, describing the ways of life there and then, narrating the details of the Prophet's first and happiest marriage. It evendescribes to you wedding traditions at the time many of which are still alive.Another woman is discussed in this book, the most famous of the Prophet's wives, namely Aisha daughter of Abu Bakr. You will read how she led an army spurred by hatred and blind ambition in order to win the crown for her loved nephew, Abdullahibn al-Zubayr, a relative of her husband, the Prophet of Islam. That was the Battle of the Camel of A.D. 656. It was then that Muslims killed Muslims, a shame that continues and apparently will always continue fueled by blind prejudices, intolerance and close-mindedness. This book is the story of two women: of one who loved and another who hated...
