W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2016-04-04 with total page 1430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A stunning work of scholarship, the Norton Critical Edition of The English Bible, King James Version, is the most accessible edition available. In celebration of the 400th anniversary of the King James Bible, these long-awaited volumes bring together succinct introductions to each biblical book, detailed explanatory annotations, and a wealth of contextual and critical materials. Archaic words are explained, textual problems are lucidly discussed, and stylistic features of the original texts are highlighted. For the New Testament and the Apocrypha, the introductions and annotations by Austin Busch and Gerald Hammond provide necessary historical and cultural background, while illuminating the complexity of the original texts. Supporting materials are divided into five sections. “Historical Contexts” excerpts Greek, Roman, and Jewish sources, such as Josephus, Philo, Tacitus, Pliny, and the Dead Sea Scrolls. Selections from Papias, Marcion, and Valentinus, among others, provide insight into the diversity of early Christianity. “Exegesis” explores classic New Testament commentary from Origen and Augustine to Strauss, Nietzsche, Wrede, and Schweitzer, who focus on the Gospels’ vexing relationship to history. Essays by contemporary scholars and critics complete the section by exemplifying a range of interdisciplinary approaches to New Testament literature. The New Testament’s powerful language and images have inspired some of the finest poems in the English language. This volume collects a wide selection of lyric poems, hymns and spirituals, and epics, from the Dream of the Rood to works by Countee Cullen, Elizabeth Bishop, and Anthony Hecht. Case studies designed to stimulate classroom discussion trace the development of Pontius Pilate as a character in post-biblical literature, follow the centuries-long exegetical debate about Romans 7, and survey competing hermeneutical approaches to Revelation. A final section samples fifteen translations of 1 Corinthians 13, from Wycliffe to contemporary versions.

Book excerpt: The Practicing the Way edition with an introduction by John Mark Comer In our digitally distracted, fragmented, and hurried culture, many of us are simply too busy and exhausted to have a meaningful life with God. Practices that slow us down to attune to the peace and presence of Jesus are essential for our time. And few practices are more important than immersing ourselves in Scripture. As apprentices of Jesus, our aim isn’t just to read Scripture or to know Scripture or even to believe Scripture. Rather, it is to be like Jesus’ disciple Mary, who “sat at Jesus' feet, listening to all he said.” It’s to be with Jesus, and to be formed to be like him one page at a time. The NIV Lectio Bible was created with that end in mind: to give those walking in the Way of Jesus a way of listening to God on the pages of Scripture. This Lectio Bible is a companion to the Scripture Practice from John Mark Comer and Practicing the Way, a nonprofit that creates resources to help churches apprentice in the Way of Jesus. Learn more at practicingtheway.org/resources. Featuring an introduction by John Mark, the NIV Lectio Bible is intentionally designed to be as distraction-free as possible. Beautifully designed, single column, with no chapter or verse numbers or subheadings to interrupt your reading, this Bible allows you to fully immerse yourself into a seamless experience with Scripture as you invite Jesus to shape the architecture of your heart. Features Full text of the accurate, readable, and clear New International Version (NIV), the most widely read modern-English Bible translation, trusted for its combination of accuracy, readability, and beauty Chapter and verse numbers removed to allow for seamless, distraction-free reading Introduction by John Mark Comer, founder of Practicing the Way Complements the Scripture Practice, one of nine core spiritual disciplines to help integrate the habits of Jesus into your daily life, from Practicing the Way (practicingtheway.org)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first component of this Arabic-English New Testament is the Arabic text of Al-Injil, which is translated from an ancient Greek manuscript that dates to the early 300s A.D. (three centuries before the Hijra) and is the earliest complete manuscript of the New Testament. It appeared online, is free to download, and is copyright-free, though it was published by Dar Al-Ilm in 1434 A.H. The Arabic is complete with vowels. The second component is an English translation done by Jeffrey Hayes, the chairman of the graders of Arabic -> English certification exams for the American Translators Association. This translation includes many Arabic words transliterated into English for the sake of Muslim readers who do not know the Arabic script. The translation has over 2800 explanatory footnotes which explain the Arabic words, give cross-references, or provide cultural or geographical information. It also includes a glossary of terms that goes into more detail about the terminology used in the translation. The Arabic and English are in parallel columns on each page, with the footnotes on the bottom. This is the 6" x 9" version of the previous 8.5" x 11" version and is otherwise identical.

Book excerpt: This book is for those of you who believe you could be, indeed should be, enjoying a happier, more satisfying life. You do not accept the notion that an individual can simply talk himself or herself into that state. You may have a broken heart, or be facing cancer, or maybe simply know there's more to life than you have. You acknowledge your helplessness without the power of God, but you know he is able to make you happy and your life really worth living. You greatly desire to be touched and to learn and accept His promises and provisions. You may know to search the scriptures because Jesus said we live by every Word of God, but that may present a challenge because the words in the King James Bible do not say the same things as the words in the versions. Does that really make a difference? What are some changes in the text? Are they important? Are you possibly missing anything? Are you reading translation errors? Are you bored with Bible studies but want to know more about His Word? In brief, is the Word of God important to you? If so, this book is for you. It was written with you in mind.
